Textiles aus Amsterdam

Textile stuff from Amsterdam

When you say “Amsterdam” you normally think “tulips” * and tulips they have. Bulbs of tulips at that time of the year. Since plants normally prefer to commit suicide under my care and also the bags with the bulbs were quite large I held my eyes open for some textile souvenirs. And even though I had little time I’ve found some things of interest.

Even though I did not buy anything there I enjoyed the visit of the small shop (in front of here larger studio behind the glass) of Tinctoria. Hand dyed, printed also fabrics with natural dyes, more or less up and down the rainbow. I had to caress the silk velour for a while… the fabrics are mostly sold as (large) cushions or custom made curtains, so not the best thing for a spontaneous take away. Especially since my luggage had been already full on arrival…

What I took with me was the great advise to check out the yarn store Stephen & Penelope. Which is just a few steps away. Besides international and German brands I found a super soft sock yarn (merino and nylon) by Undercover Otter. And we all know that a bit of sock yarn always fits into the luggage. A real local souvenir, dyed in Amsterdam in this and some other colorways are even made exclusively for that yarn store. Under the device: “neon is the new neutral”. It is so soft that I can imagine making a shawl or a scarf with it, but thanks to the nylon content it will be lasting enough for socks. Looking forward to knit with it.

Then it was time to head back, but on my way I crossed a small street marked and my eye stopped at the shawls and scarfs of Cevelann. Hard for me to pass that, expecially since I had remarked an interesting weave. This time made in Turkey, from eco friendly grown cotton and woven on traditional looms using traditional patters. Or just beautiful and interesting. That’s why a shawl had to come with me, too. 🙂

So Amsterdam has a few things to offer for textile loving people. And I just realized that it’s less than three hours by train from my place…. guess I’ll have to go back there…

Also nicht mein Interessengebiet.)

(*Yes, I know. Some think “cannabis” first. That also exist there. Even as a grow your own kit next to the tulip bulbs. But since I do not smoke anyhow that would only interest my for the fiber. But to produce enough fiber to make something of it a pot would not be enough, it would require a field. So of no interest to me.)
