As I mentionned in my posts about sarees… they are usually not worn on the bare skin, but there is something under it: a petticoat and a blouse.

Very often people believe, that there are strict rules how these things are supposed to be made… some looks in shop windows and in my friends wardrobe showed me: Also here – no rules, you can do whatever works and whatever you like.

The petticoat is necessary to “carry” the weight of the saree and also to make it swing at the bottom. So a drawstring at the waist is important. An elastic couldn’t carry the weight of the cloth. And if you think that a wedding saree with gold or gemstones can be quite heavy…. Then the petticoat is supposed to be slim on the hips but giving a certain flare to the bottom of the saree. A gored skirt does this. It can follow the curve of the hip closely and you can build in some or some more flare at hte hemline. Depending on the saree you will be wearing with it and depending on your personal taste.

I had the great opportunity to inspect my friends saree blouses closely. I had planned to take pictures… but we were so occupied having fun together, that in the end I did not find the time to do it. Sorry… I try to show the basic lines with some drawings, but I cannot draw…

What all blouses have in common is that they are short. It’s kind of a cropped top, ending more or less directely under the bust. They are very tight and the closing is on the front, what I saw were hooks and eyes. That holds well, as I said… they are tight. The back usually was just cut straight on the fold. But how the Top is formed… that happens how the tailor likes…

The first sketch tries to show the blouse of my friends wedding saree. The first moment I was surprised to see three darts to form the front, but as this part is always covered bei the saree itsself it’s quite logic to use three darts to give the desired shape.

What my “sketch” doesn’t show at all is how smartly the blouse was stitched: Large seam allowances were left on the side seams and the sleeve seam. So you can adapt the blouse if the young bride (at the wedding) gains weight. A saree is a lifetime garment…

Shaping can be achived with other cuts, too. One I say hat the seams like on a Bra.

On websites I’ve also read the word “choli” for the blose. While I was in India I didn’t read it, at least on the signs written in English, it was also referred to as “blouse”. Also my friend always called it a blouse. Maybe that’s different in different parts of India, this country has quite a lot of different languages…

Yet another version has an underbust seam and then shapes the upper part with princess seams. Or with darts…

But that’s all only examples… any shaping is allowed. And neckline or sleeves will be done as the wearer likes it. Also the blouse is a fashion garment. And yes, there is fashion for sarees! I found this webarticle, featuring different blouse-styles.
