Habeam (Pyjama)Hose!

All right, nearly finished.

The elastic for the waist is in, but only pinned, not sewn. And I’ll have to hem the pants. But the month isn’t finished yet, so chances are good…

What took a bit time were the bias striped parts of the legs. I didn’t want a cropped pyjama again, so I had to find a solution for my lack of fabric. Cut on bias was the only thing possible, bur even then the fabric wasn’t large enough. I had to piece. I did it following the stripes, so the piecing is nearly invisible. A lot of work for some missing 10cm, but I like the result, I have zu admit.

Now the pants have the perfect length. So my hems will have to be narrow… mybe I’ll give my hemmer foot another try. Cut on bias and seams closed. Does that call disaster…?

I also put at least a bit of effort in the matching of the stripes. Not a lot, but effort.

And I say it’s worth it. They match nicely, don’t they?

versetzte KreuznahtAnother thing that did slow me down were the french seams. (The fabric is fine enough to do this even for the crotch seam. Just keeping the seam very scant and cutting back the seam allowance to a minimum) This is not only due to the fact that I don’t have a serger (Frau mhs had offered me hers)… It’s just… I can’t stop myself… they are just more beautiful at the inside than any serged seam.

Why I’m doing that for sleepwear? Well… good question.

I think it’s my secret love for luxury. The luxury to put work and effort into something, that no one will ever admire… just to… well… because I think I’m worth it. To give myself a treat. Or something like that.

And this luxury of using old fasioned techniques, to time consuming and therefor expensive to be used in ready to war clothes… that has always been a very affordable luxury. Even when I was a student and didn’t have much money.

I could turn a simple, not very expensive piece of fabric into something very special. (Maybe… that was the way my grandmother taught me to sew.)

There is less progress on the top, but even there it isn’t hopeless until the end of the month. The sleeves are pinbasted left sides of fabric facing (therefore first step of the french seam) and I’m curious whether it will be possible to make French seams there with the sleeve cap ease. I never tried that.

Then I will have to close the side seams and the sleeve seams and hem everything. Not to forget all that little stuff that comes in the end: topstitiching, pressing the lapels, buttons, buttonholes… but I am very motivated to finish this project succesfully in January. This year.

(Sometimes I have the oportunity to show my pyjamas, I have to admit. When I’m staying with friends at their place I’m having breakfast in it. Also when good friends stay at our place. So it’s a good thing to have at least some nice night wear. The big rest of my nightwear comes from (kingdom of cheap shop) Tati in Paris or the supermarket of whatever holiday place. Guess what I usually forget when I’m packing my luggage… 😉 )

If you look on the lables on top, there is a new one “Motivationsmonat” (Motivation of the month). No, not only for this month. I decided that I want to take part every month this year, making one item and using fabric from my stash. If I really make it, then I will have done a lot more sewing in 2008 than I did 2007…
