Opferfest?

Christmas is coming closer. And as gifts are the most important aspect of christmas I’m reading a lot about that all over blogland. And as most blogs I’m reading are written by crafty people it’s no surprise that handmade gifts are topic number one.

Also the proposal to give only handmade gifts, either made by onesself or made by someone else but still handmade and not industrially produced comes well in that line of thought. (Even if it usually comes next to the link to the said persons etsy- or dawanda-Shop… Still nothing wrong with it. Good money for good work is a good thing.

*seufz*

But when it comes to the reason why handmade gifts are so much better… I start to feel less happy.

Handmade is better because… it’s handmade.

Because someone has been putting time and effort in it.

Well, you know… I love gifts, really!

But I don’t want a sacrifice!

And no, I don’t think that things become just better or more valuable because someone sacrificed his or her time to make it.

Don’t get me wrong, some of the most beautiful gifts of my life were handmade. Like a bag a got from Sabine some years ago which still gives me pleasure every time Im using it. And also reminds me of her. I use bags, I love bags and I’m just lovin roses crazily…

On the other hand… I’m the shower type (with having a real bath like once every two years) so even the most elaborate bath-salt is just wasted on me. :-/

Isn’t te question, whether the person who is getting a gift will like it, whether it will fit in the persones lifestyle and habits, more important than the question of “handmade” vs. “industrial production”?

If the “handemade” comes on top of a perfect gift…. and maybe the maker had a lot of fun making it… the better!

But pleace, no sacrifice… not even a sacrifice of time just because everything “has” to be handmade. Better enjoy the time directely with your friends and family…

(This year my gifts will be mostly handmade, too. But more by chance. I picked some nice handmade stuff in India and I’m working on other stuff myself. But as I mentionned… that’s more by chance, because the “fitting” things were handmade. At least I hope they will fit… 😉 )
