Elan 511 – noch kein Schnitt, aber schon Kritik

Elan 511, not (my) pattern yet

I have some clothes were my standard bras tend to show so I went looking for a bra pattern with 3/4 cups and straps that are mostly at the sides and not so centered. And somehow I tought it would be easier to fit a new pattern than adapting a fitting one.

So I choose Élan 511 which looked quite nice on the drawing.

Bad surprise came with the instructions. They have a quite “unique” sizing and what they call “DD” cups is more likely to be “B” for most other patterns. Also the method how to determine the right size (which is decribed in detail) seemed a bit odd to me and I suspected that this would create a very loosely fitting bra. Anyhow, 42FF (which would have been my size according to the instructions) didn’t exist.

Now I already do have a fitting bra pattern and if I take the cm numbers from there and convert them to inch I get 40, which exists as size. That is much better. So nothing easier than comparing my pattern pieces to the new pattern. The back has a similar shape and size, already good. But the cup parts are shaped completely different. Also the placement of back band and bridge relative to the parting line between upper and lower cup are completely different. Means: I don’t understand the pattern at all.

So I took the biggest size and made a bra. I still hat enough remnants and material. I’ve choosen a very soft fabric, because I expect the cups to be a bit to small and a soft and stretchy fabric can help to make the bra wearable, at least for lazy lounging on my couch. I well do need some more bras and I don’t like to work for nothing.

I made it a not very elaborate project. Did not line the cups, left out the one sided padding I normally make. But… I now have a bra for lounging and it helps me to find out how to change the pattern. Then let’s go for the second version…
