Buntes aus dem Baskenland

Colorful souvenirs from the pays basque

I’ve been on holidays and this time the French Pyrenees were the place. Of course I also checked for textile souvenirs.

Now in the Pyrenees they have a lot of wool, but normally the wool is on the sheep.

And the sheep are mostly there to deliver milk to make extremely tasty cheese… so I did not find much wool. We drove by one company who were selling directly from the production site, but they only had sewn or knitted clothes. The fabric by the meter would have been interesting though…

But I did not have to leave the region empty handed…

There is a company the weaves the traditional basque stripe patterns: Lartigue 1910. We were not really into the basque country, but there is a factory outlet in Oloron Ste-Marie.

I was a little late for the guided tour, but I did savor the the shop in all its colors. the fabrix are homedec fabrics, so you get anything from cusions, tablecloths, windowtreatment, towels… and anything else that can be made of those stabile fabrics like big bags, small purses, little baggies for keys,…

Mal sehen, was draus wird…

And they are also selling the fabry by the meter. You can have more traditional colors or bright, modern combinations. You can have it larger or small… or very small, that would be the fabric for espandrilles (the two pieces on the right in the picture). The fabrics are not super chep (but worth their price) and since I did not have a special project in midn I picked some pieces from the remnants bin. The result you can see in the picture. Let’s see, what will become of them…
