Sari wird Sommerkleid

Saree turns summer dress

From my voyage to India I had brought two Ikat sarees. And I wanted to use them, wear them. In Europe.

That fashion says “Maxi dress” and “ethno style” is just perfect for that. I had intended to take the dress do holiday last year but I didn’t finish in time, so it went into hibernation. But now I took it out and it is finished before summer is there. 🙂

I wanted a wearable dress but my intention was also to cut the fabric as few as possible. So the idea was to cut up the pallu in a tight top and use the rest of the saree length for the skirt.

For the upper part I took a Anna Scholz dress from one of my Burda Plus. I cut the pattern about 10 lower than my waist and made a test version from my blue-white striped test fabric. (Which is used up by now.) Then Frau mhs helped me to fit the bustier and to determine the position of the carriers.

Since I wanted to cut as few as possible so I checked whether I could use the selvedge as hem.

And yes, if I started the skirt part directly under the bust this works. (So we painted this line directly on the test fabric also.)

Maxikleid aus SariThe fabric of the saree is very thin so you cannot make a fitted top from it. So I made the top from a linen-cotton blend I still had in my stash. (Remenant from an earlier project.)

Then a lot of folding. 5m of fabric had to be brought to my underbust measurement. I decided to match the pattern of the selvedge rather than making the folds exactly the same width and depth. I had only to fold end (re)pin four times until I had it right.

Maxidress aus SariThen I did simply sew the skirt to the linen top, left side of skirt on right side of the linen.

After that I had to cut into the pallu and make it a top. Both tops were sewn and turned on the upper edge. (Sewing in the carriers was a bit tricky, but makeable.)

The lower part of the top remains free and is not sewn to the skirt. I’ve again used the selvedge as hem.

Since I had to handsew quite a bit making the dress took a bit of time, but I like the result. The skirt is wide and it will be comfortable to wear on hot summer days.

Now I’m just waiting for the heat, because when Frau mhs made the pics it was about 10°C… pics had to be taken quickly. 😉
