Why can’t I leave a comment?

I know that sometimes people wonder why they can’t leave a comment here (like when they send me a message in a forum or an email) so here some words about how the comments on this blog work.

In general everyone can leave a comment here, but if you are a first time commenter (so you name and email is not known to the system) it is automatically moderated. You know, the spam problem… but that alone is not enough to prevent spam so I am using a filter also. So some words that appear often in spam comments are blocked and the comment won’t get through. I am sorry to say that this includes also everything with “.ru” and “.pl”. I have nothing against people of Poland or Russia, but spammers are to often using web addresses with those endings, so I had to put them on the filter. If you come from one of those countries you can still leave a comment, just do not fill in email or blog address (if hosted under these extensions) in the file, give only your name and leave the comment. Because in general comments are free on this blog, you are not required to leave any information about yourself. (It’s a pity for me that I can’t check your blog in those cases, but I can’t help it.)

So with those setting the blog operates most of the time. Except… when I know that I won’t have the time to check for comments several times per day. Like when I am working with clients, when I’m on holiday or away from home for other reasons, when I’m ill… whatever. In that case I have to include something else on my filter: “.com”. Since many spam mails use fake gmail.com email addresses those settings do make a big difference. (The difference between 0-5 spam/24hrs and 80-120spam/24hrs. Just to five you a picture what would await me after a two week holiday if I would not take those measures.) Unfortunately this will also apply to those who are no first time commenters. 🙁 I am not happy with it but I have not the means to change it at the moment. The solution is the same as above: When your comment does not appear and you do not see the message that it will be moderated, the leave out any URL or email address that contains “.com” and the comment will get through. 🙂
