Textile Stuff from India, part 1

So, jetzt aber endlich… Beim Photographieren und Sichten ist mir erst klar geworden, wie viel ich gekauft habe… deswegen werde ich euere Neugier in mehreren Portionen befriedigen.

Now finally… While I was taking the pictures it dawned to me, how many things I did buy… so I’ll show it in several posts.

Eine traditionelle Technik in Rajasthan ist “Bandhani”, was wir auch als Knotenbatik oder Neudeutsch “tie dye” kennen. Also abbinden und dann färben. (Zur Erinnerung: Ein Klick aufs Bild bring eine größere Variante.)

One of the traditional techniques in Rajasthan is “Bandhani” also known as tie-dye. (Just to remind you: if you click on a picture you’ll get a bigger version.)

Dabei kann das Muster ganz einfache Punkte wie auf der roten Dupatta haben oder auch Muster darstellen wie auf den beiden anderen. Oder auch mehrfarbig gearbeitet werden. (Wobei diese drei Schals alle eher einfache Bandhani Varianten zeigen. Je dichter die Knoten gesetzt sind und je kleiner die Punkte sind, desto wertvoller ist die Arbeit. Und natürlich geht das ganze mit richtig vielen Farben und ist dann besonders wertvoll.)

The pattern can be simple dots like on the red dupatta or it can create a bigger pattern like on the other two. And of course you can work it with more than one color. (These three shawls are all quite simple Bandhani versions. The smaller the dots are and the closer they are placed together the more valuable the cloth. Also it can be done with multiple colors and then the cloth gets really valuable.)

Eher ungewöhnlich ist es, diese Technik an dicken, festen Wollstolen anzuwenden.Zusammen mit einem Webmuster an den Enden.

Quite unusal is the use of the technique with a thick and strong woolen shawl. Combined with a woven pattern at the ends of the shawl.

Dieses Stück stammt aus einem Khadi-Laden in Jaipur, handgesponnen und handgewoben, vermutlich aus einer einfachen, strapazierfähigen Wolle, denn es ist etwas steif im Griff und ein wenig kratzig. Eine sehr interessante Textur und spannend im Griff.  Aber um sich auf dem Sofa einzuwickeln oder es über den Wintermantel zu legen, ist es perfekt. Und so groß, daß es auch als kleine Sofadecke taugt.

This unique piece is from a Khadi shop in Jaipur, so it is homespun and handwoven, probably from some “simple” and stabile wool, because it is a bit rough and scratchy. And so interesting to touch and feel. And perfect to wrap me in winter on the sofa or over my coat. And so big, it might be enough to cover me for a short afternoon nap.

Die nächste typische Technik ist Blockprint mit Holzmodeln. Es war nicht ganz einfach, etwas zu finden, was nicht mit Elephanten bedruckt war… aber das hier fand ich dann sehr schön.

(Ich habe nicht grundsätzlich was gegen Elephanten, aber die Muster waren irgendwie alle gleich. Und das war anders. 🙂 )

Another typical technique is block print with wooden blocks. It was not so easy to find something that did not mostly feature elephants… but that I did like a lot.

(It’s not that I don’t like elephants in general, but somehow all pattern were the same. And this was different… 🙂 )

Hier noch eine Nahaufnahme. Was man hier vielleicht ansatzweise erkennt: Das rote Muster ist über eines in zwei Naturtönen gedruckt.

Das ganze ist eine riesige Tagesdecke, die ich gerne quilten würde, um eine waschbare Gästedecke zu bekommen. Da ich keine Quilterin vor dem Herrn bin, wird das ein spannendes Projekt, das Ding ist riesig, von daher muß ich wohl von Hand quilten. Was komplettes Neuland für mich ist….

It’s a huge bedspread and my intention is to quilt it to make a washable blanket for our guests. I am not a quilter, so this will be a thrilling project. Also the cloth is huge, so I will have to do the quilting by hand. Which is completely new to me…

Da wird es also vermutlich noch den einen oder anderen ratlosen Blogeintrag von mir geben. :o)
