Abstepptrick für Ärmel und Hosenbeine

Topstitching sleeves and pants

Turning to the inside is not only useful for hemming small openings, but also when you want to topstitch sleeveseams or the seams on pant legs. Especially when you want both seams topstitched.

Again the sleeve of the baby jacket.

The sleeveseam is closed, the seam allowances are on the right side of the sleeve (I want it visible, you remember). I had cut them back to 1cm with sharp scissors after closing the seam. On that part that is going to be the sleeve hem I trimmed them as much as possible to avoid bulk.

Nix geheimnisvolles… 😉

Now the well known step: turning the sleeve. Left side is out now, right side is in.

No hidden secret…. 😉

Then we can start sewing.

We start at the top of the sleeve and sew our way down to the bottom.

Just start at the side with the wider opening. Which is the top of the sleeve and not the hem.

Then just sew. Don’t be irritated by nothing.

You’ll have to (re)adjust the fabric in front of the pressure foot several times. But don’t worry, you can topstitch anything, as long as the opening is large enough to let the presser foot pass.

That’s how it looks, when you reach the end of the seam.

The presser foot is more or less inside a standing sleeve.

(If you have a long leg of a trouser there will be quite a lot of fabric and sometimes handling all that fabric is a bit complicated. But it is possible.)

Repeat the procedure for the second seam allowance and then turn the sleeve back, right side is on the outside again.

And voilá, topstitched sleeve seams, without side transport or other fancy and expensive sewing machine features.
