Camel through the eye of a needle or stringing a glass bead on a soft cord

When I made the sashiko brush case I wanted cord an big glass beads for a closure. I had beautiful red glass beads and blackcord, exactely the size of the how in the bead. But not any larger. So I could not use a needle to pull the cord through. Neither using the trick to make asling from fine thread and use that to pull the cord through. Also the cord was to soft and to fraying to push it. Stiffening with some tape made it to thick again…

But I am as stubborn as a glass bead is hard…

First I made the hole in the bead larger. No, not by drilling. (I didn’t have a fitting drill, elseway that would have been an option, too…) But I cleaned the hole, it was still filed with “glass dust” from the original drilling. First I pulled a thicker knitting yarn through it several times and then I used an interdental brush and water. That was very efficient.

Now I had to keep the end of my cord firmly togehter and I needed a kind of a “handle” to pull it through.

All I finally needed was a good polyester sewing thread. (AlterfilS in my case.) I sewed a thread loop to the end of my cord. Then I stitched the end tight and fray free with dense feston or buttonhole stitches. Then I added a second loop, so the cord would glide really stright through the bead and will not tilt or twist inside.

Okay, that was a bit of work… but I won and the bead was strung on the cord finally. And that’s what counts, isn’t it?
