Cosy Dress

(Die Photopose muß ich mir merken. Die ist zwar sauunbequem, verbessert meine Figur aber deutlich. Und hier ein Lob an meinen Mann, der selbstständig erkannte, daß sein Kamerastandort einen wirklich enormen Hintern macht und ihn daraufhin zu einer deutlich freundlicheren Perspektive wechselte. Das andere Bild zeig ich nicht… )

(I’ll have to remember that pose. It’s very uncomfortable, but improves my figure a lot. And thumbs up for DH who recognized all by himself, that I had an even more enormous bum from his position and changed to a much better camera position. I won’t ever show the other picture….)

Aber um figurfreundlichkeit geht es bei einem Kuschelkleid eh nicht wirklich. Ich hatte schon ewig kein Strickkleid mehr und so verlängerte ich die Museum Tunic aus Modern Top-Down Knitting um einige Zentimeter um etwas zu bekommen, was eindeutig ein Kleid ist.

But for a cosy dress like this figure flattering is not the main purpose. It must have been ages that I owned a knit dress so I added some length to the Museum Tunic from Modern Top-Down Knitting and got something that definitely qualifies as a dress.

Als Garn hätte ich gerne das originale von Debby Bliss genommen, aber wie das bei Anleitungen aus Büchern so ist… das gab es natürlich nicht mehr. Ich fand dann “Topas” von ggh als Ersatz. Wichtig schien mir, daß das Garn leicht ist (also vergleichsweise viel Lauflänge, trotz der Dicke), damit sich das Kleid nicht durch sein Eigengewicht verzieht. Der Preis dafür ist relativ viel Acryl and Nylon, aber da ich ja ohnehin das Unterkleid drunter trage, ist das okay. Viel Auswahl hatte ich bei den Kriterien ohnehin nicht. (Und ein Blick auf den Armausschnitt sagt, daß ich da definitiv was drunter tragen sollte, wenn ich nicht meinen BH vorführen will.)

I would have liked to take the original yarn from Debby Bliss but as it is often when you take instructions from books… the yarn was dicontinued. So finally I choose “Topas” by ggh as an replacement. I thought it important that the yarn was realtively lightweight (means a lot of yardage for such a bulky yarn). The price you pay is a realtively high amount of acrylic and nylon in the yarn. But since I will always wearing my “slip” underneath that is okay. There was not much choice, meeting my criteria anyhow. (And looking on the armhole openings it is clear I will never wear it without something mith sleeves beneath, because I am not interested in showcasing my bra.

Das Kleid wird von oben nach unten gestrickt, so konnte ich immer wieder anprobieren, ob es paßt. Da ich den Schnitt ohnehin völlig neu ausrechnen mußte (was mithilfe der Schnittzeichnung der Anleitung auch leidlich geht) konnte ich ihn auch an meine Figur anpassen. Angefangen an der Schulter habe ich mit XL, am Vorderteil habe ich dann auf 2XL zugenommen, den Rücken in XL weitergestrickt. Ab dem gehäkelten Taillenband (was mir sehr gut gefällt, weil es dem Kleid etwas Form und Stabilität gibt, ohne es im Design wirklich zu unterbrechen) habe ich dann in 2XL bis runter gestrickt. Der Teil war dann etwas langweilig… Der Saum ist innen mit einer elastischen Spitze in grau einbesetzt, dadurch fällt er schöner und rollt nicht.

The dress is knitted top down, so I could try it on every now and then to check if the fit is right. My gauge was different so I had to recalculate the whole pattern (which was possible thanks to the technical drawing of the dress) anyhow, so I could also adapt it to my figure. I started with an XL on the shoulders, added stitches to get a 2XL on the front while knitting a XL for the back. After the crocheted waistband (a detail I like a lot because it adds stability without really “breaking” the design) I finished the dress in 2XL. That part was quite boring to knit… I’ve sewn elastic lace in grey as a trim on the inside of the hem. Gives a better fall and it doesn’t curl.

Aber das Ergebnis gefällt mir, entspricht dem, was ich haben wollte. Und für das Vorderteil einfach zwei Größen mehr zu nehmen als für das Rückenteil war eine gute Strategie. Positiver Nebeneffekt: Da das Kleid so weit ist, sehen meine Beine vergleichsweise schlank aus und ich kann es auch mit meinen kurzen, flachen Stiefeletten tragen. Was natürlich angenehmer ist, wenn man morgens auf die Straßenbahn wartet, als die Pumps. Dann allerdings mit schwarzen Strumpfhosen. (Perfekt wären jetzt Stiefeletten und Dunkelblau mit 3cm Absatz… aber das versuche ich nicht mal. Wäre mir dann für “zu einem Kleid” auch zu teuer.)

I like the result, it’s what I had in mind. Knitting the front 2 sizes bigger than the back was a good strategy. Positive side effect: Since the dress is so wide it makes my legs look slimmer and I will be able to wear it with flat booties. Which is more practial  than pumps if you are waiting for the tramway in the morning in winter. Then I will have to use black tights. (The perfect solution would be navy booties with a 3cm heel. But that I will not even try to find. Also buying booties that only fit one dress would be to expensive to my liking.)

Ein kleiner Haken hat sich allerdings beim Tragen herausgestellt: Zumindest wenn man sitzt, verlängert sich das Kleid nach einem oder zwei Tagen des Tragens gewaltig… Beim Waschen geht es zwar wieder zusammen, aber das ist suboptimal. Mal sehen, ob ich eine Lösung finde…

A small problem shows after wearing: At least if I am sitting a lot the dress gets a lot longer after only one or two days…. It goes back after washing, but still… could be better. Let’s see if I can find a solution….
