“Corsett” for the jacket

Beim Nähen merke ich ja gelegentlich, dass es Gründe gibt, warum in der Bekleidungsindustrie manche Dinge auf eine bestimmte Art und Weise gemacht werden. Zum Beispiel Kunststoffreißverschlüsse, die aussehen, als ob sie aus Metall wären.

While sewing I discover sometimes that there are reasons why some things are done in a certain way in clothing industry. Like using plastic zippers that look like metal.

Ich mag so was nicht, also bekommt meine Jacke natürlich echte Metallreißverschlüsse. An was ich nicht so wirklich gedacht habe war, daß ein Metallreißverschluss schwer ist. Und mein Stoff ist eher leicht und weich. Einen groben Metallreißverschluss trägt der nicht. Geht nicht gibt es aber nicht. Also braucht meine Jacke innen eine Art “Korsett” an allen Stellen, wo Reißverschlüsse sitzen, das die Reißverschlüsse trägt.

I don’t like that kind of “fake”, so I am using zippers with real metal teeth. What I had not really considered before is, that those zippers are relatively heavy, my fabric on the other side soft and having not much body. Since “impossible” is not possible for me my jacket needs a kind of a “corsett” inside. At all places where zippers will sit, so the weight of the zippers will not hang on the fabric, but on something sturdier.

Stützkonstruktion in der Jacke.So wirklich steif soll es aber auch nicht werden, ein Kompromiss ist also gefragt. Ich habe mir dann bei Plissee Becker Rosshaareinlage geholt. Diese mit der Zackenschere schräg in etwa 5cm breite Streifen geschnitten. Die Streifen habe ich dann etwas gedehnt mit Hexenstich über die Teilungsnaht genäht. Durch den Unterlegstoff geht das ganz gut, an dem kann man den Streifen einfach festnähen. Die Nahtzugaben bleiben frei. Genauso kommt ein Streifen über den Tascheneingriff. Dabei ist der Streifen auf beiden Seiten etwa 3cm länger als der Eingriff später.

On the other hand I do not want it really stiff. So I needed a compromise. So finally I got traditonal tailoring horse hair interfacing at Plissee Becker. I cut it on the bias in about 5cm wide strips, using the pinking shears. Those strips then were handsewn over the seams of the fronts. With the underlining fabric that is not so difficult, there is something to sew it on. The seam allowances stay free. Same for the pockets, I am sewing a strip over each pocket opening. About 3cm longer on both sides of the opening.

Verstärkung über dem ÄrmelschlitzGenauso kommt ein Streifchen über den Ärmelschlitz. Auch hier lasse ich die Saumzugabe frei.

Same for the sleeve vent. A short strip gets sewn over the position of th the sleeve vent. Also here I am leaving the hem allowance free.

Reißverschluss Schlitz ausschneidenDa der Stoff nicht steif werden soll, schneide ich für die Reißverschlüsse wieder Schlitze in die Einlage. Diese Schlitze sind auf jeder Seite 2mm breiter als der Reißverschlussschlitz sein soll. Auch diese Stoffkanten werden mit Hexenstich festgenäht, aber ganz knapp an der Kante der Einlage.

I don’t want it stiff around the zippers, so I am cutting away the interfacing at the place, where the zippers will get sewn in. On each side 2mm larger than the opening is supposed to be. Again the edge of the interfacing gets sewn to the interlining. Making sure to stich really close to the cut edge.

Als nächstes muß ich herausfinden, wie ich die Reißverschlüsse sinnvoll eigenäht bekomme…

Next thing will be to figure out how to sew in the zippers in a way I like it…

Fresh on the needles

JackeGenäht habe ich schon seit etwa einem Monat nicht mehr. Leider sind die Jackenteile auch nicht schon zusammengenäht, sondern nur auf die Puppe gesteckt. Was immerhin in so weit hilfreich ist, daß ich mich entschlossen habe, noch eine kleine Schulterstütze aus Seidenorganza einzuarbeiten. Auch die Taschenbeutel fehlen noch, dann kann ich die Teile endlich zusammen nähen.

It is about one month that I didn’t sew anything. The parts of my jacket have not been sewn together, I just pinned them to my dress form. Which was kind of helpful, because it helped me to decide that I want a bit of a shoulder interfacing from silk organza in the fronts. Then also the pockets are missing, then I can finally assemble the parts.

MützeDa Weihnachten naht, sind auch einge Geschenke fällig. Da mein Bruder unvorsichtigerweise gemeint hatte, das Muster der Socken von vor zwei Jahren sei doch als Mütze viel besser… na dem kann geholfen werden. 😀

Christmas is approaching, so some gifts need also to be made. My brother had teased me, the pattern of the socks he got two years ago would even be better as a hat… well, he’ll get a hat. 😀

Socken in rotAbgabetermin für meine Obdachlosensocken ist am Montag. Dummerweise habe ich noch zwei Paare auf der Nadel. Diese hier aus Crelando “Anika” “musste” ich anfangen, weil ich das andere angefangene Paar bei meinem Bruder vergessen hatte. Hier fehlt noch ein wenig Schaft und der Bund, das sollte bis Montag auf alle Fälle klappen.

Moday will be the day when our socks for the homeless will be delivered. Problem is, that I still have two unfinished pairs. Those from “Anika” by Crelando I “had” to start because I had forgotten another unfinished pair at my brothers place. Here I only need to be a bit of the leg and the cuff. That should be done by Monday.

RestesockenDie Restesocken hat mir mein Bruder inzwischen geschickt, aber hier fehlt noch ein wenig Fuß und der ganze Rest. Mir fällt auf, daß das Abwiegen mit der Küchenwaage doch deutlich ungenauer ist als mit der Briefwaage beim ersten Mal.

The other socks, where I am using yarn leftovers, my brother has sent to me meanwhile. But here the second sock is not even half knitted. I am still before the heel. What I can see from the differences in the colors is, that using the kitchen scale was less precise than the letter scale I had used for my first attempt in that style.

Wenn ich die auch noch schaffen will bis Montag, sollte das Wochenende viel Regen bringen… :o)

If I want to finish those also until Monday there should be a lot of rain… :o)

TopflappenUnd weil mir gerade völlig langweilig war, mußte ich noch “mal eben schnell” einen riesigen und komplzierten Topflappen anfangen… Garn ist hier “Camilla” von Woll Butt. Und wenn man ständig ganz viele Knäuel dran hängen hat, dann ist das auch recht umständlich. Der ist aber auch fast fertig.

And since all that was not enough and I felt bored I had to start a “quick” huge potholder in crochet. Yarn is “Camilla” by Woll Butt. And if you have a lot of skeins attached to your crochet project all the time it is a bit messy… but now it is nearly finished.

Pattern Crafting: a vest in biker style

Auch ohne Motorrad gefallen mir Biker Jacken wegen ihrer klaren Schnittform gut. Man kann sie zwar im Moment auch überall kaufen, aber natürlich passt das dann nicht so gut. Also selber machen. Und da es mühsamer ist, einen Schnitt anzupassen, als einen passenden Schnitt umzubasteln, war mal wieder Bastelzeit. 🙂

I don’t have a motor bike, but vests in biker style I like for the clear and pure shape. You can buy them easily at the moment, but RTW never really fits me. So time for DIY. And since it is more tedious to fit a new pattern than changing a already fitted pattern it was time for pattern crafting.

Vorderteil abtrennenAusgangspunkt war eine kurze relativ gerade Jacke mit einem Brustabnäher vorne. Butterick 5927 wie hier schon mal verwendet. Ich brauche jetzt ein zweiteiliges Vorderteil, das in der Mitte überlappt und eine schräge Teilungsnaht hat. Wegen der Schräge muß man vorher wissen, wie lange die Jacke werden soll und wie breit die Überlappung ist. Die Bilder zeigen meine zweite Variante, mit angepaßter Länge nach dem ersten Probeteil… Ich habe meinen Vorderteilschnitt auf der Unterlage festgesteckt und dann ein Stück Folie darüber gesteckt. Ich ziehe eine schräge Linie vom Saum, etwa 5 cm links der Mitte zur Schulter, etwa zwei Fingerbreit neben demHalsausschnitt. Den Rest von Halsausschnitt und vordere Mitte pause ich von dem Ursprungsschnitt ab.

My starting point is a relatively straight and short Jacket with a vreast dart. Butterick 5927 as already used here. Now I need a two piece front which overlaps in the middle and has a diagonal seam. Because of the straight diagnoal line you need to know beforehand how long the vest is supposed to be. So the pics show the second version after the first muslin… I pinned my front pattern to my working space (on a folded bed sheet). Then I pinned a new plastic sheet over it. Now I am drawing a diagonal line from the hem to the shouider. I started about 5 cm left from the middle on the bottom and arrived about two fingers wide next to the neckline. For the rest, the neckline and the front middle I copy the lines of the original pattern.

Vorderteil doppeln
Das mittlere Vorderteil muß gedoppelt werden, also falte ich meine Folie entlang der vorderen Mittellinie und kopiere das im vorherigen Schritt entstandene Vorderteil. Jetzt noch beschriften….

The middle front needs to be mirrored. So I am folding the plastic sheet along the front middle and I am tracing the line I made in the last step. Not forgetting to lable the pattern….

Seitliches Vorderteil
Für das seitliche Vorderteil kommt eine dritte Schicht Folie drüber und ich kopiere von meiner schrägen Teilungnaht zur Seite hin. Auch hier nicht vergessen, Paßzeichen mit zu übertragen und das Teil gut zu beschriften.

For the side front piece I add a third clear plastic sheet over the other two and I trace from the newly drawn diagonal seam to the side. Not forgetting to trace marks and notches and labeling everything.

Vordere Schnitteile
So sehen dann die beiden neuen Vorderteile aus. Da der Butterickschnitt schon Nahtzugaben hat, meine neu gezeichneten Nahtlinien aber nicht, muß ich da natürlich noch die Nahtzgabe ergänzen.

That are my new front patterns. The Butterick Pattern has seam allowances included, my newly made seam seam hasn’t. So I need to add seam allowances there.

Abnäher entfernen
Jetzt soll noch der Abnäher raus. Ich schneide entlang einer Abnäherline gerade bis zur Teilungsnaht durch.

Now I want to remove the bust dart. Cutting one of the dart seam lines straight to my new seam.

Abnäher wegfalten
Und jetzt den zweiten Abnäherschenkel auf den durchgeschnittenen falten. Da ich nicht bis zur Abnäherspitze, sondern weiter bis zur Teilungsnaht geschnitten habe können die Linien nicht genau zur Deckung gebracht werden. Wichtig ist, daß sie genau auf der seitlichen Nahtlinine genau aufeinander liegen. Denn sonst stimmt die Länge der Seitennaht nicht mehr. (Je nach Figur bzw. Abnähertiefe ist es möglich, daß das Vorderteil dann nicht mehr passt. Bei mir haut es hin, das hatte ich am ersten Probeteil schon getestet…) Danach muß man die Nahtzugabe noch einschneiden und ergänzen, damit sie sich der Rundung anpasst.

Now I am folding the second dart seam over the one I’ve cut open. Since I did not cut further than the dart I can’t align the two lines. So it is important to match them exactely on the side seam. If not the side seams of front and back will not match. (Depending on your individual figure and the depth of the dart it might be, that the front does not fit any longer after that operation. For me it works, my first muslin had proven that…) And the last step is to snip in the seam allowance and taping a bit of plastic sheet unterneath (or just two pieces of adhesive tape, one from each side) to adapt the seam allowance to the now curved shape.

Und schon habe ich meine Biker Jacke. (Nach dem nächsten Probeteil habe ich das Vorderteil in der Ausschnittline noch mal etwas geändert. Die Änderung ging dann aber ohne weiteren Test.)

And the pattern for a biker style vest is finished. (After the second muslin I decided to change the neckline of the front middle a bit. But that was a minor adjustment and did not need another test.)
