Cardito, die Anleitung

How to make Cardito

This time the instructions how to sew “Cardito” are only in German, but they have a lot of pictures. If anyone seriously wants to sew it let me now, then I can translate the sewing pattern. And if you don’t remember how it looked like: It’s shown in this entry in February.

Cardito, zum dritten

Cardito III

CarditoIn German we have a saying about the third try that works out (not sure if that can be translated in English) and so I present “Cardito”. My little buddy who carries around all my credit and banking and whatever club/ adherence/ membership/… cards and takes care that they have a place where I can find them easily.

From the outside there is no big difference to the first two versions. No surprise, because I am still using the remnants of the very same fabrics and the design was okay for me from the beginning. But the slightly stiff gray velour I had used for one of the inner layers isn’t big enough so I had to exchange it for another fabric. To give my purse enough “body” I fused a very lightweight interfacing to the shell.

The changes inside are not dramatic, but they make a difference for me. (If you give it a sharp look you might see that the fabric visible between the card slots has a pattern now, that’s where I run out of the other fabric.) To make the card slots I returned to my first attempt, using Venezia lining fabric.

Now I have seven card slots on each side and the lowest slot is close enough to the bottom to help the purse to hold its shape. The slots are now deep enough to hold the cards securely.

Also bleibt es. Drei Mal reicht.

It is not perfect yet. One could start the slots on the bottom and space them a little further apart to reduce bulk. But it works for me the way it is, so that’s what I’ll keep. Three times the same thing is enough. (Also I have none of that Kafka braid left… (What I did not find out yet is how to press the folds for the card slots in the thin lining fabric without them coming off more or less. I tried hand basting directly after pressing which did help, but only partially. Then I tried to baste every fold directly after sewing it, which wasn’t bad either but somehow the slots got spaced apart a little more that way…)

Fast richtig zum zweiten

Not yet for the second time

Last year I made this credit card case, but I wasn’t completely happy with it. First thing I had made a mistake in pressing the card holders and they were sized very unevenly. And I had only five on one side, not six as planned.

Then the closer strip was a bit tight, because I had sewn on the buttons on the empty purse. Not taking into consideration, that it will be thicker once all the cards are in. Okay, that would have been correctable by changing the placement of the snap.

Reste waren noch jeden Menge da, also hier Version 2.

But.. the compartments for the cards were not very deep either. So it is easy to take the cards out, but with the soft lining fabric the cards tend to slip out by themselves. There was still enough fabric, so here is version number 2.

I thought shaping the compartments would be easier if the fabric was a little stiffer. So thin cotton would be perfect. I didn’t have really thin one, so I considered the middle thin one good enough. Also I made the compartments deeper and choose the placment of the snaps for the closure after filling the card holder.

As you can see I had not thought things through very well: My poplin was too thick, so the purse is quite thick even without anything in. Also the compartments are a bit tight. First they were to tight, the cards didn’t fit in. I could correct that with some hand hemming. But my change of the depth of the compartments brought them also closer together, so now there is “empty space” below the lowest card compartment. Since nothing is stabilized this makes the purse a bit “wonky” there.

Well… I’m going to use this one while cutting version number three…
