I jumped the last but one hurdle…

.. auf dem Weg zur fertigen Jeans habe ich endlich übersprungen. (Ja, immer noch die Jeans die ich vor einem halben Jahr oder so angefangen habe.) Jetzt fehlt nur noch der Saum

… on my way to a finished pair of jeans. (Yes, still those I’ve started half a year ago or so.) Now only the hem is missing.

Was mich aufhielt waren die Nieten.

Zuerst fand ich keine in Kupfer, nur in Silber. Auch auf der Webseite von Prym nicht. Glücklicherweise gibt es Leute, die offensichtlich die Webseite besser im Griff haben als ich und mir die Artikelnummer sagen konnten. Daraufhin beschloss ich, diese Woche noch ein paar Läden mehr aufzusuchen.

What stopped me first were the rivets. First I didn’t find any in copper, only in silvery colors. Even on the Prym Website I couldn’t find any. Luckily there are others that are better in searching this site and they could tell me the Product number. So I decided to go to some more shops this week.

Then I found that I still had rivets from the last time. They were from YKK but they aren’t any worse.

Dann habe ich aber bei mir noch Nieten vom letzten Mal gefunden, zwar von YKK, aber die sind nicht schlechter.

Nur die reinzubekommen… das war kein Vergnügen. Zwar war beim Werkzeug ein kleines Locheisen dabei, das ist aber so kurz, daß man es kaum festhalten kann ohne sich mit dem Hammer auf die Finger zu hauen. Außerdem ist es wohl nicht scharf genug, um mit dem Stoff fertig zu werden. Zum Glück ist bei meinem Lochstickset von Bernina ein Pfriem dabei, mit dem ging das besser.

But getting them in was no fun… A small punch was included in the package but that is so short that you hardly can hammer on it without hammering on your fingers, too. Plus it is not sharp enough to cut the fabric. Luckily my Bernina eyelet kit contains a awl which worked better.

Trotzdem mußten die Nieten auch noch irgendwie da rein. Ich habe zwar die Variozange, aber zum einen ist die von Prym und nur halb kompatibel, zum anderen hilft sie eh nicht viel, weil man sie nur etwa 2cm von der Kante entfernt einsetzen kann, länger ist der Zangenkopf nicht. Das mitgelieferte Plastikwerkzeug reicht auch nicht weiter.

But then I had to get the rivets fixed. I own the Variopliers to attach rivets and snaps, but mine are from Prym and they are only halfway compatible with YKK. And they don’t help much anyhow, because you can use them only about 2cm away from a border, the “head” is not longer. Same for the plastic tools that come with the rivets.

Zum Glück habe ich von diesen Plastikdingern eine große Sammlung, also eines mit dem Werkzeug für das Nietenunterteil, eines mit dem Werkzeug für das Nietenoberteil bestückt und dann kräftig los hämmern und hoffen, daß das ganze dann auch gerade aufeinander liegt.

Luckily I have a whole lot of those plastic things so I used onw for the lower part of the rivet and another one for the upper one. Then hammering like made and hoping the upper and lower rivet are correctly positioned.

To attach six rivets I only “killed” four. And really firmly closed rivets are yet another thing. But they seem to stay put well enough. Stil… if anyone knows a better technique let me know!

Ich habe auf sechs Nieten auch nur vier verhauen. Und wirklich fest eingeschlagene Nieten sehen anders aus. Aber sie scheinen zu halten. Wenn jemand eine gute Technik weiß, wie man das besser bewältigen kann… nur her damit!

Also nur noch der Saum… vorher muß allerdings eine weitere Hürde überwunden werden: Ich muß was nähen, was ich am Freitag anziehen will. Für meine Verhältnisse ja eher knapp, auch wenn es nur was relativ kleines und einfaches ist.

So it’s only the hem that is missing. But before I can do that I need to sew another item I want to wear on Friday. For my sewing speed that is a bit tight, but it’s something small and easy, so it should work.
