Oblique Socks: Skew

Eigentlich dachte ich ja, so schnell würde ich keine Socken mehr stricken, weil es doch langweilig geworden war. Aber dann kam Skew. Und die mußte ich ausprobieren.

I’d thought I wouldn’t knit more socks soon because it was about getting boring. But the came Skew. And I had to try.

Skew nach AnleitungAllerdings ist die Socke nicht so leicht an den Fuß anzupassen. Und die Maschenprobe bekam ich nicht passend. Wie üblich, entweder die Länge oder die Breite. (Und das auch nur mit 1,75er Nadeln, wobei die Anleitung nach 2,25 verlangt…) Also habe ich die erste Variante strickt nach Anleitung gestrickt. (Als Garn hatte ich Noro Kureyon.)

Das Ergebnis war gelinde gesagt seltsam…

Die Spitze absurd spitzig, das Fußteil zu lang und mit dem Abnahmen am Bein hätte ich die Socke gar nicht mehr über die Ferse bekommen. Zumal die Socke ja durch den schrägen Maschenverlauf eh schon weniger dehnbar ist. (Warum zuerst so viele Maschen abgenommen werden, damit man dann wieder welche zunimmt, um das Bündchen zu stricken… das verstehe ich definitiv nicht.)

As usual I was not able to match the gauge (either stitches or rows) so fitting the sock was not easy. (The pattern calls for 2.25 mm needles, I needed 1.75 mm.) So I’ve knitted one sock according to the pattern. (My yarn was Noro Kureyon Sock.)

The result was a bit… odd.

The toe was absurdly pointy and too long. So was the foot, too long. And the decreases for the leg made the sock so tight that I could hardly pull it over my heel. (Since the stitches run oblique they are less stretchy anyhow.) And what I do not understand is why there are all those decreases just to make increases for the cuff again…?

SockenAlso habe ich die Socke wieder komplett aufgeribbelt und einen neuen Versuch gestartet. Das Garn mochte das nicht so gerne, es ist ohnehin nicht sehr fest gedreht und unregelmäßig und das wird durchs Aufziehen und neu verstricken nicht besser. (Die Farben sind absolut toll, aber was der Hype um Noro so soll ist mir nach der Erfahrung nicht ganz klar.)

Die Zunahme an der Spitze verändert, den Fuß gekürzt und auch die Ferse. Letzteres war nicht ganz beabsichtigt, so ganz hatte ich das Muster noch nicht verstanden. Die ist also etwas eng. Und am Bein habe ich weniger abgenommen als laut Anleitung.

So I frogged it and made a new start. The yarn wasn’t well twisted and quite irregular from the beginning and this did not get better from frogging. (the colors are great but I cannot say that I really understand that Noro Hype.)

Socke SkewSo I changed the increases for the toe, shortened the foot and also the heel. That was not completely intended, I hadn’t really understood the pattern then. ‘So the heels are a bit tight. And I made less decreases for the leg, of course.

Aber so passen sie. Zumindest vor der Wäsche. Denn Handwäsche für Socken ist keine Option, sie warten im Moment auf die Waschmaschine. Eingehen dürfen sie aber nicht mehr.

Die Farben sind übrigens auch etwas unerwartet, das Knäuel war so gewickelt, daß rot die dominierende Farbe erschien…

Spaß hat es auf alle Fälle gemacht, also wird es noch eine andere Version geben, diesmal aus bewährter Regia Wolle.

But they fit, at least before washing. At the moment they are waiting for the washing machine, since handwash is not an option for sock wool. I hope they will not become any smaller…

The colors were a bit unexpected… The skein seemed to have red a the dominant color, so the amount of green was quite a surprise…

But knitting the socks was fun so there will be more of it. But the next version will be made of Regia.

(Socks on hooks or Christmas present revealed)

Da die Weihnachtsgeschenke jetzt alle geöffnet sind, kann ich auch das eine oder andere selbstgemachte nachtragen. Auf Ravelry ist dies hier schon länger zu finden, denn da hat mein Bruder keinen Account, aber im Blog weiß man ja nie…

Meinen jüngsten Bruder hatte ich ja vor zwei Jahren mit den galaktischen Weihnachtssocken beglückt, nur haben die nicht sehr lange gehalten. Da er meiner Aufforderung, sie mir zum Stopfen zu übergeben, bislang nicht nachgekommen war, hat er wohl kein weiteres Paar, also mußte ich Abhilfe schaffen.

Häkelsocke für BruderDa Häkelsocken etwas fester und dicker sind als Stricksocken, habe ich es diesmal mit der Technik versucht. Und diesmal nicht mit vernünftigem Regia Garn, das andere Modell war Trekking von Zitron und da ist ein Paar von meinem Mann ebenfalls ganz schnell durchgewesen. Das nie wieder. Danke.

Die Anleitung ist wieder die rungehäkelte Basissocke nach dem Buch Gehäkelte Trend-Socken von Bärbel Born, als Garn habe ich 60g Regia Color aus Restbeständen verbraucht und damit das “Bunt” etwas gemäßigt wird wird noch 40g Regia Natural Look in einem warmen Grauton dazugenommen. (Letzteres kam aus der Maschenkunst in Köln.) Gebraucht habe ich so nebenherhäkelnd zwei Wochen, geht also recht zügig.

(Und eine kleine Änderung beim Beginn der Ferse habe ich gemacht, damit die “Naht” die man durch das Ringelmuster ja immer sieht, jeweils zum Knöchel hin getragen werden kann.)

Since everyone should have opened his or her christmas gift by now I can put up the things I’ve made since october. The facts about this socks are already on ravelry so here the short version: Two years ago my brother got those galaktischen Weihnachtssocken for Christmas. Only they wore through very quickly. He never gave them to me for repair so I assumed that he needed another pair to wear first.

Since I wanted more stability I opted for crocheted socks instead of knitted one this time. And I used Regia yarn, the other ones were Trekking from Zitron which I will never use again. (One pair of my husbands socks made of that yarn were also “walked through” in no time. Never again, thank you.)

Inzwischen habe ich auch Rückmeldung über die Paßform, zwei Reihen kürzer im Mittelteil meinte er und dafür die Spitze weniger spitz. Sollte ich ihm noch mal welche häkeln, werde ich mehr Maschen anschlagen, die Socken sind wirklich relativ spitz vorne, das ist mir an meinen auch aufgefallen. Was besser paßt hängt vermutlich von der Fußform ab.

Meanwhile I got feedback about the fit. Two rows shorter would be better and the toes are to pointy. Should I crochet another pari for my brother they’ll be shorter and I’ll start with more stitches. For me also they were quite pointy at the toes. Probably it depends on the shape of the feet what fits better.

Socks with hooks

Nachdem Bärbel mir ja schon die ganze Zeit was vorgehäkelt hat mußte ich es einfach mal probieren… Nur um zu sehen, ob es geht…

gehäkelte SockenSocken häkeln. Und tatsächlich, es funktioniert und man kann sie sogar anziehen.

Since Bärbel did it all the time I finally couldn’t resist and had to try it myself. Just to find out whether it works.

Crocheted sock. And indeed, it works and I can even wear them.

Natürlich habe ich mir auch Bärbels Buch Gehäkelte Trend-Socken vorgenommen. Nicht nur verschiedene Sockenmodelle sind drin, sondern auch schlichte Grundanleitungen. Ich habe die Grundanleitung für die “rundgehäkelte Socke” genommen.

Of course I used Bärbels Book Gehäkelte Trend-Socken. there are not only different fancy socks but also basic instructions you can use in any size. I used the instructions for “rundgehäkelte Socke”. (Bärbel has it on ravelry as “Basic Socks”.)

Und habe einfach der Anleitung gemäß gearbeitet. Hinten im Buch ist nämlich eine Lasche mit übersichtlichen Maschen- und Zentimeterangaben für verschiedene Größen. (Und ein aufgedrucktes Zentimetermaß ist ebenfalls nützlich, so mußte ich mein Bandmaß nicht auspacken.)

I had never crocheted socks before so I just made my way through the instructions. That worked well, there were only two things that irritated me a bit on my way. One was forming the heel, I had the knitted heel in mind so I ignored the instructions about distributing the added stitches. That looks a bit funny now, but when I’m wearing it it works well anyhow.

Die Anleitung funktionierte sehr gut, ich konnte mich einfach “entlanghäkeln”. Irritiert war ich nur zwei Mal, einmal bei der Ferse, so ich die Zunahmen erst mal ungeschickt verteilt habe. Ich hatte die Strickferse im Kopf und verstand daher nicht, warum ich die Zunahmen verteilen soll. Und habe es daher auch nicht wirklich gemacht. Naja, man häkelt erst mal einen relativ flachen Teller, also muß man die Zunahmen verteilen. Tut man es nicht, sieht die Socke zwar etwas seltsam aus, beim Tragen ist es dann aber egal.

Der zweite Punkt war der Übergang zum Schaft, da heißt es nämlich, man soll die Abnahme wie bei der Nahtsocke machen. Dann mußte ich mir das erst mal durchlesen (hatte ich nicht vor gehabt) und es brauchte etwas Vorstellungsvermügen, wie das bei der Rundsocke geht. Aber ich habe es rausgefunden. 🙂

The second point were the decreases at the shaft. Here the instructions tell you to check at the sewn sock pattern. So I had to read that and figure out, because the other pattern is not in the round, so I needed some imagination. But I managed. 🙂

Die Socken sind elastischer als ich erwartet hatte und tragen sich gut. Etwas rauher finde ich, als gestrickte. Und jetzt sind sie in der Wäsche…

Result: The socks are more elastic than I had expected and they wear well. A bit rougher than knitted one I’d say. And now they are in the laundry…

Auf den ersten Blick geringelt.

Auf den zweiten… haben sie irgendwie eine Längsstruktur. Rippen? Aber wie… ohne linke Maschen?

On the second look… they have a kind of lengthwise structure, don’t they? Are there ribs? Without purling?

Einige der rechten Maschen sind verschränkt gestrickt, auch das gibt feine Längsstreifen.

Das war es mit den Socken… in nächster Zeit stehen dann Lace-Schals auf dem Programm, aber das war ja schon zu sehen.

Some stitches wer knitted through the backloop, the result are very finde longtitudinal stripes.

Now that is all about socks for the next years I guess. Next will be Lace-shawls, but that you could already see.

Weiter geht es mit den Restesocken…

Rippen ermöglichen ja, daß die Socke sich dem Fuß gut anpasst. Dafür ist es flach bequemer.

Also fangen die Rippen hier erst irgendwo auf dem Fuß an und werden immer mehr, bis die Socke rundherum gerippt ist.

(Ganz einfach und es verhindert zu viel Langeweile beim Stricken…)

More socks…

The nice thing about ribbing on socks is, that the sock can adapt better to the shape of the foot. On the other hand plain is mor comfortable to the skin.

So here the ribs start somewhere on the middle of the foot and become more until they run all around.

(Easy, but prevents too much boredom while knitting… )

Cross the stripe-Socken

RestesockenUnd noch ein Sockenpaar aus der Resteverwertung. Diesmal waren es zwei größere Reste, einmal von den Space Invader Socken, die mein jüngster Bruder letztes Jahr zu Weihnachten bekommen hat und einmal die Regia Stretch von diesem luftigen Modell.

Und da mir nur Ringel natürlich zu langweilig waren, mußte auch noch etwas Struktur durch gekreuzte Maschen rein. Für Socken ist das Muster so nicht ganz optimal, wel es recht stabil und weniger dehnbar ist, aber für andere Zwecke werde ich es mir merken. Nämlich wenn ich mal wieder was suche, was formstabil bleiben soll…

(und jetzt zurück an die Lace-Borte. SissiL, vielen Dank für den Tip mit  den verkürzten Reihen. Ich habe zwar noch keine Vorstellung wie das mit dem Muster des Randes hinkommt, aber wenn ich mal etwas mehr Erfahrung mit Lace habe, dann wird das sicher auch noch werden. Ich merke es mir auf alle Fälle!)

Again “use up your sock yarn” socks from the last weeks. I only needed two different yarns because what I had left was quite a lot. The cream yarn is from the Space Invader Socks my youngest brother got for Christmas last year, the blue is Regia Stretch from that airy pair.

And as plain stripes were to boring for me I added a bit of structure with crossed stitches. I have to admit that the pattern is not the best you can use for socks, because it takes out a lot of the stretch, but I will keep it in mind for other purposes. When I will be looking for something that keeps its form well.

SockenBlue stripes for men

Von meiner Sockenwollrestevernichtung profitiert auch mein Herzblatt.

Und alle blauen und ein paar graue Reste zusammen ergeben sehr bunte Socken. (Und wer sagt, daß Socken immer symmetrisch gemustert sein müssen? 😉 )

My plan to use up all my restover sockyarns fills not only my drawer, but also that of my sweetheart.

All blue and some grey yarns together make very coloured stripes. (Und who says, that socks need to have a symmetrical pattern? 😉 )

Zwei Reste ergeben ein Paar Socken. (Ja, Socken habe ich auch noch einige gestrickt und nie gezeigt. Aber ich versuche aufzuholen…)

Restesocke
Diesmal weiß ich sogar noch, wo ich die Idee her habe, im Blog von Chopsewy, wo sie als Kiwisocken firmieren.

Bei Frau mhs habe ich dann noch einen kurzen Block auf eine vergleichbare Anleitung geworfen und dann war das Muster nicht schwer.

Die Ringel aus den beiden Garnen verlaufen quer, die Rippen schräg. Und der Vorteil von Tow Up ist, daß man nur ein bißchen was wieder auftrennen muß, wenn man bei der zweiten Socke merkt, daß von der einen Farbe weniger da ist als geplant, von der anderen dafür noch mehr…

This time I can even tell where I picked the idea, it was from Chopsewys blog, where they are called Kiwisocken.

Frau mhs had a similar pattern and allowed me a look, then everything was clear.

The two different yarns form horizontal stripes, the ribs run diagonal. And the advantage of toe up socks is, that you only have to ravel some rows when you find at the end of the second sock, that you have less yarn of the one colour (and more of the other) than expected…

Gouttes-tombées-Socken

SockenMal wieder ein paar Socken. Für den Sommer sollten sie etwas luftiger werden. Aber gleichzeitig sollte das Muster nicht so kompliziert zu stricken sein, denn ich stricke hauptsächlich in der Bahne.

Also habe ich mir dieses Muster ausgedacht. Nett an den Fallmaschen ist auch, daß man weniger Maschen braucht und die Socken so recht zügig fertig werden.

Das Garn ist Regia Stretchcolour, mit Nadelstärke 2 gestrickt.

Das Garn strickt sich ganz gut, aber ich weiß nicht, wie man den Stretcheffekt wirklich zum Einsatz bringt. Beim Stricken spürt man den Stretch des Garnes, aber Wollsocken in einem Rippenmuster sind ja sonst auch recht elastisch.

Gespannt bin ich auch, ob mein Muster das Waschen übersteht.. ich habe das noch nie so gestrickt.

Socks again. I wanted something more airy for the summer. But as I’m usually knitting on the train I also wanted something easy to memorize and knit.

So I came up with this pattern. And the dropped stitches pattern also has the advantage that you need less stitches and therefor the socks will be finished quicker…

The yarn is Regia Stretchcolour and I used needles size 2.

The yarn knits nicely, but I’m not completely sure what the advantage of the stretchy yarn is, at least in that pattern. Woolen yarn and a ribbing pattern produce a stretchy sock anyhow… You feel the stretch of the yarn while knitting, but how to use the yarn to its advantage…? I don’t know.

What I’m also curious about is whether the pattern will survive the washing. I have never used this pattern before.

Da ich über den Motivationsmonat erst noch ein bißchen nachdenken muß (die Vorstellung meines Projekts im Forum hat eine weitere Möglichkeit aufgetan…) nutze ich die Zeit fürs Stricken…

Hier haben wir mal ein schönes Beispiel für Socken die nicht so ganz meinen Erwartungen entsprechen…

Socke aus ZitronIrgendwo im Internet (natürlich mal wieder nicht gebookmarked 🙁 ) hatte ich Sochen aus selbstmusternder Wolle mit verkürzten Reihen gesehen und weil mir die Idee mit dem keilförmigen Musterverlauf gefiel, wollte ich das auch machen.

Flachere Keile als gesehen, aber das sind ja Änderungen die man leicht machen kann.

Als Garn hatte ich mein letztes Knäuel Trekking XXL von Zitron gewählt, in diesen wunderbaren Blautönen.

Leider hat dieses Garn einen sehr sanften Farbverlauf, so daß bei ganz genauem Hinsehen teilweise ein keilförmiger Farbverlauf zu erkennen ist, aber letztschlussendlich…. sind es Ringel geblieben. Und das hätte ich einfacher auch haben können, durch simples hochstricken.

Naja, ich liebe die Farben immer noch und der Schaft hat durch die verkürzten Reihen einen leichten Wellenverlauf, sieht ganz nett aus.

Aber ein Garn mit klar abgegrenzten Farben und eher kürzeren Repeats der Farben wäre für das Muster wohl geeigneter gewesen….

As I need more time to (re)consider the august “Motivationsmonat” (the Hobbyschneiderin-Forum offered a new option that is worth thinking about….) here a bit of knitting.

These are a good example for sox that did not turn out as I had expected them-

Somewhere in Internet (did evidently not bookmark the link 🙁 ) I had seen sock with short rows that caused a selfstriping yarn to form a triangular pattern. I really liked the effect and therefor wanted to do something similar.

I wanted my triangles a bit differently shaped than the original, so I figured the pattern out myself.

I had only one ball of self striping yarn left, it’s Trekking XXL from Zitron, a blue one which I loved for the colour.

What I had not taken into consideration is, that the colours in Trekking XXL are not very destinct from each other but more blending softly from one to the next. So you hardly can see anything of the triangles, it looks more like… stripes. I could have made that much easier by just knitting straight. :o)

I still do love the colours and the shaft got nice waves from the short row shaping, but… well…

A yarn with more distinct colours (and maybe also shorter length for each colour) would have been a better choise for that.
