Eine lange und umfangreiche Testreihe…

A long series of intensive testing was what I had on my mind.

… hatte ich geplant. Denn auf der letzten h&h zog mich Herr Seitz von Alterfil beinahe verschwörerisch auf die Seite und meinte, er hätte da was, was mich sicher interessieren würde, nur sei es noch im Hotelzimmer. Denn das sei noch kein fertiges Produkt.

Ganz klar, daß mich so was brennend interessierte, ich bin Frau, ich bin neugierig.

On the last h&h trade fair Mr Seitz from Alterfil took me aside and said he had something that might interest me. Only he had forgotten it in his hotel room. Because it was still in sample stage.

Of course I was interested, I am female, I am curious.

Und so traf einige Wochen nach der Messe ein Päckchen bei mir ein… elastisches Nähgarn. Was würde das sein? Richtig spürbar dehnbar? Und die Nähte an Wäsche (klar, an was sonst hätte ich denke sollen?) bleiben damit noch dehnbarer? Man kann eventuell gar Shirts einfach mit Steppstich säumen? Wow.

So some weeks after the trade fair a parcel arrived… elastic sewing thread. What would that be? Would it really be stretchy? Could you feel the stretch with your hands? Could that create extremely durable seams on undies? Without a serger? Might it even be possible to hem shirts with a simple straight stitch? Wow.

elastischer FadenDer Faden kam, der Faden war spürbar dehnbar. Doch wie würde meine Haushaltsmaschine darauf reagieren? Leider waren dann andere Projekte dringender und ich mußte die umfangreiche Testsession (und ich war mir sicher, das würde eine werden) erst mal verschieben.

The thread came, the thread could be stretched with my fingers. But how would my household sewing machine react to that? But then other project were more urgent and I had to set it aside because I hadn’t time for a long and systematic testing session. (And I was absolutely sure I would need that.)

Doch jetzt hatte ich endlich genug Zeit. Material ist ein bielastischer Dessoustoff aus Microfaser von Elingeria, 75er SuperStretch Nadeln von Organ und der Faden. Dazu meine Maschine, eine über zehn Jahre alte Bernina virtuosa 160.

Also gut…. tief durchgeatmet und einen Unterfaden aufgespult. Eingelegt. Was nun mit der Fadenspannung? Nun gut, es wird die erste Testnaht, also lassen wir es einfach mal auf Standardeinstellung. Gradstich, Länge 2,2mm (Standardeinstellung). Stoff doppellagig, längs zum Maschenlauf. Langsam losgenäht. Näht gut. Keine komischen Geräusche. Kein Fadensalat. Rückseite? Sieht auch schön aus. Und.. dehnbar? Oh ja, eine 5cm lange Stoffstrecke läßt sich auf 8cm dehnen. Die Naht reißt nicht. Und mehr Dehnung gibt der Stoff nicht her.

Now I finally had enough time. Material is a four way stretch microfibre for dessous from Elingeria, Organ Superstretch needles in size 75, the thread and my over ten year old Bernina virtuosa 160 sewing machine.

Well… taking a deep breath I’m filling a bobbin and load the machine with both threads. What kind of tension to choose? Well, it’s the first seam, let’s take the standard setting. Straight seam, length 2.2mm (standard). Two layers of fabric, sewing in direction of the grain. Start sewing slowly. Stitches form. No strange sounds. No nests of thread. Looking on the back side…. looks fine also. Does it stretch? Oh yes, it does. 5cm of seam can be stretched to a length of 8cm. The thread does not break. No further stretching of the fabric then.

Nähte mit Alterfil elastic 120Ich mache es kurz: Ich mußte nichts testen, der Faden näht einfach. Mit Zickzack (Stichlänge 2,5), mit Overlockstich (Stichlänge 1,4) und mit genähtem Zickzack (Stichlänge 0,8). Einmal längs zum Maschenlauf, einmal quer zum Maschenlauf.

To cut a long story short: No need for testing, the thread simply did its job. Zigzag (stitchlength 2.5), overlock stitch (stitchlength 1.4) and wave stitch (stitchlength 0.8). Along the grain and across the grain.

Das Garn bleibt gleich neben der Maschine, beim nächsten Unterwäscheprojekt darf es gleich richtig ran. Ich bin gespannt, auf die Langzeitergebnisse. 🙂

I didn’t store the thread away because my next underwear sewing project will be black anyhow and that will be the perfect occasion to bring the test to real life. 🙂

Ein Sensor “misst” die Stoffarbe und der Nähfaden wird dann genau passend eingefärbt. Coole Idee, oder?

You hold you fabric against an sensor and the machine dyes the thread in the right color. If that is not cool…?

Leider bislang wohl nur eine Designidee, wie man der Webseite der Designerin Monika Jakubek entnehmen kann. Für meinen Geldbeutel sicher auch besser.

Alterfil gives a serger! (And delivers in no time)

Päckchen von AlterfilSchon wieder war der Postbote da…. Ich hatte doch erst am Dienstag Nachmittag den Webshop mit der umfangreichen Bestellung gefüttert (was ein kleines bißchen lästig ist, weil man nach jedem einzelnen Röllchen wieder im Warenkorb landet und dann von dort wieder zurück zur Garnsorte, wieder eine Farbnummer eintippen, wieder im Warenkorb landen…) und heute morgen klingelte schon der Paketbote.

Again the postman rang…. It was only Tuesday afternoon that I placed my order in the webshop and this morning my sewing thread was already delivered.

Das ist übrigens nicht alles für mich, nur das obere Kistchen. Das untere Kistchen verbirgt mehr Näh- und noch ein paar Stickgarne für Kristina, die verwendet das aber auch beruflich für die vielen süßen Sachen, die man in ihrem Blog sehen kann. Die braucht auch mehr als ich. (Und die Röllchen für Frau mhs sind auch schon weggelegt.

The threads are not all for me, only from the upper box. The lower one hides sewing and embroidery threads for Kristina. Since she is selling her cute stuff she needs more than I do. (And the spools for Frau mhs are already set aside.)

Auch ja, der Webshop kommt mit den diversen Mengerabattmodellen offensichtlich nicht ganz klar. Die Rechnung stimmte mit der Angabe des Onlinewarenkorbs nicht überein… es war billiger. 🙂

Ach ja, die Overlock… wer bis 15.12. Alterfil Online Shop bestellt bekommt nicht nur sein Garn noch vor Weihnachten, der nimmt auch an der Verlosung einer Overlock von Gritzner teil. – Aber bestellt mal besser nichts, dann sind meine Chancen auf den Gewinn besser. 😀

Finally the shop is online!

Auf der h&h hat Alterfil es ja schon angekündigt, aber es hat noch etwas gedauert. Aber jetzt ist es so weit:

Alterfil had announced it on the h&h trade fair, but it took some time. But now they are finally ready:

Es gibt alle Näh- und alle Stickgarne zu bestellen. Auch das feine AlterfilS 150, das ich so gerne zum Dessous Nähen nehme. Und gab es bislang nur die großen 1000m Spulen in allen Farben, kann man jetzt auch alle Farben in den kleineren 200m Röllchen bekommen. (Ich bleibe bei den großen, sonst rentiert sich das ja nicht.) Oder auch 5000m Konen für die Großverbraucher…

Und natürlich die diversen Jeansgarne, Ziergarne, Overlockgarne, Bauschgarne,… Alles erhältlich in allen Stärken. Keine Mindestmenge (zumindest habe ich keine gefunden), aber wer 10 gleiche Röllchen bestellt bekommt es günstiger. Und wer vielleicht noch für die Nachbarin mitbestellt kann noch zusätzlichen Mengenrabatt bekommen.

Die Farbkarte habe ich ja schon, also kann ich meine Bestände mal wieder auffüllen… 🙂 (Die 1000m AlterfilS 120 gibt es gerade zum Sonderpreis, ebenso wie die Garnbox mit den 48 verschiedenen 200m Wickeln.)

You can order all of their sewing and embroidery threads. Now I can get my favourite thread for sewing underwear, the fine AlterfilS 150, in all colours without any problem. And for those who do not need 120 strength thread in 1000m spools they now offer the smaller 200m spools in all colours, too. If you need a really big amount you can also get 5000m cones… (I’ll remain with 1000m, just right for me.)

And of course you get all decorative thread, strong jeans thread, thread for sergers,… several hundreds of colours, different strengths. And if you order a little more you get a discount, so ask your sewing friend next door… 🙂

Looooong prize!

Schon vor einiger Zeit kam ein weiteres Päckchen bei mir an, leider wieder nicht für mich, sondern als Gewinn für die Recyclling-Challenge. Die Firma Alterfil hat sich ebenfalls spendabel gezeigt.

Some time ago another parcel arrived, not for me, but for one winner of our Recycling-Challenge. After the fair in Cologne Alterfil sent a very nice parcel, too.

Alterfil NähgarnEin Gewinner wird sich über eine Box mit 48 verschiedenen Farben des bewährten Alterfil S Nähgarns freuen können! Ich finde diese Box immer so toll, alleine diese Farben angucken können…

Zusätzlich darf auch jemand eine kleine Testpackung mit dem ganz neu produzierten Robison-Anton Stickgarnen in Empfang nehmen. Eine Handvoll Handmaße mit dem praktischen Stichzähler und eine Fadenschere werden auch neue Besitzer finden.

Da ich ja nur Sachen als Preise “erbettelt” habe, die ich selber auch gut finde, gibt es natürlich auch einen Grund, warum ich speziell Alterfil so gerne als Nähfaden verarbeite.

Daß die Firma Alterfil in Deutschland produziert und damit ein paar Arbeitsplätze sichert ist natürlich nett, auch ist mein Vertrauen in einen hier kontrollierten Öko-Tex 100 Standard schon ein bißchen höher, als wenn eine Fabrik irgendwo in Asien steht, aber letztlich will ich ja den Faden vernähen, nicht mein gutes Gewissen.

Und der hat mich überzeugt. Alterfil produziert Nähfäden vor allem für die Bekleidungsindustrie. Und um da zu bestehen muß der Faden natürlich besonders reißfest sein, denn jeder Fadenriss kostet Zeit und somit Geld. Zudem laufen Industriemaschinen mit wesentlich höherer Geschwindigkeit als unsere Maschinen Zuhause. Außerdem ist er sehr glatt und fusselt sehr wenig. Daß merke ich auch bei mir Zuhause, ich muß die Nähmaschine seltener putzen, wenn ich mit Alterfil S nähe. Und dadurch daß der Faden auch an der Schnittkante glatt ist läßt er sich selbst in das kleinste Öhr meiner feinsten Handnähnadel problemlos einfädeln. Ach ja, beim Handnähen verzwirbelt er sich weniger als andere Fäden.

Warum das so ist kann ich nicht erklären, ich bin kein Textiltechniker, aber das ist meine Erfahrung mit Alterfil S.

As I’m only asking for “Challenge-sponsoring” at companies where I personally like the product there are reason why I prefere to work with Alterfil thread.

They spin and dye in Germany, so they give work to some people her, that is nice. Also the thread is certified “Ökotex 100” and I have to admit that I have a bit more trust to control in Germany than in some Asian country. But in the end I am sewing with thread, not with a quiet conscience.

And so it’s the thread that convinced me. Alterfil produces mainly for garment industry. Machines there run much faster than home sewing machines and every broken thread costs time and therefor money. So a thread for industry needs more strength and I am fine with that on my sewing machine also. Then the surface of the thread is very smooth and quite resistant against abrasion. I have less lint to clean out of my machine. The fibres of the thread hold together very well so I can thread even the tiny eye of my smallest needle without any problem. Also it twists less in hand sewing.

I cannot explain why this is the case, I’m not a thread-engineer, but this is my personal experience with Alterfil S.

But this is not all, other brands have good thread, too.

Aber es gibt etwas, das hat nur Alterfil, denn darauf haben sie ein Patent.

Zur Verdeutlichung mal zwei Stücke Faden, beide wurden um die Finger zu einer acht gedreht, gebügelt und dann wieder hingelegt. Der blaue Faden ist von Alterfil, bei dem anderen handelt es sich um den Nähfaden eines anderen renommierten Herstellers.

But there is something you only find in Alterfil, because they have it patented.

To show the difference here a little experiment. I took a length of thread that was wound around my fingers and then pressed with my iron. The blue one is Alterfil S, the other one is sewing thread of another brand of good reputation.

Was passiert?

Nun, nicht überraschend wickelt sich meine Fadenacht ab und ich kann den Faden nach oben wegziehen.

What happens?

Well, not surprisingly the thread unwinds and I can pull the thread loose.

Oops, the thread remains a figure eight and hangs in the air….

Ja, Alterfil hat eine spezielle Behandlung, die durch das Erhitzen beim Bügeln aktiviert wird. Und dann klebt der Faden aneinander.

Was habe ich davon?

Es stabilisiert meine Naht. Habe ich z.B. Nahtkräusel einmal ausgebügelt (gerade sehr feine Stoffe sind nach dem Nähen ja gerne mal leicht gekräuselt), dann bleibt die Naht glatt, auch nach dem Waschen.

Außerdem “verkleben” Ober und Unterfaden an jeder Verschlingung, also bei jedem Stich. Sollte irgendwann also eine Naht an einer Stelle doch einmal reißen oder kaputt gehen, dann trennt sich nicht so schnell die ganze Naht auf. (Wobei ich jetzt noch keine gerissene Naht mit Alterfil hatte…). Bei Kettstich habe ich mir sagen lassen ist der Effekt wichtiger. Auch wenn man den ganz feinen Alterfil 150 S als Unterfaden beim Sticken nimmt mag das nützlich sein. Oder vielleicht auch bei free-standing Lace? Naja, ich habe keine Stickmaschine… Und natürlich wenn man Knöpfe mit der Maschine annäht, einmal drüberbügeln und auch die Vernähstiche sind extra-sicher, der Knopf hält bombenfest. (Ich nähe lieber per Hand… aber bei den gekauften Hemden von meinem Herzblatt kenne ich das, irgendwann löst sich der Vernähknoten dann doch. Die Hersteller sollten Alterfil benutzen….)

Alterfil S has a special treatment that is activated by the heat of pressing, then the thread sticks together.

What’s that good for?

Well. you have more stability for your seams. If you have a slightly puckered seam (especially on very fine fabrics this can not always be avoided) and you press the puckers out you will not have to repeat that after each washing. Once pressed it’s straight. Puckers wont come back.

Then on a normal seam upper thread and bobbin thread will “glue” to each other after every stitch. So if a seam breaks not the whole seam will rip open at once it’s only one stitch that is gone. (Even though I don’t know what you have to do to break a seam with Alterfil S, it never happened to me in the last years.) If you use a chain-stitch that might be even more important. Or if you use the very fine Alterfil S 150 as bobbin thread for an embroidery machine or maybe to make free-standing lace…? But I don’t have an embroidery machine so that is for others to test… But buttons… especially machine sewn buttons, press and they wont come loose. (I prefer to handsew buttons, but if I look on the shirts of my sweetheart, the machine sewn buttons always come down. The shirt makers should better use Alterfil….)

Der einzige Haken ist, daß Alterfil im Einzelhandel nur selten zu bekommen ist. Aber es soll bald einen Onlineshop direkt beim Hersteller geben, ich hoffe mal, da bekommen wir das Garn dann in allen 460 Standardfarben. Und zwar bald…

The only problem is that only very few shops carry Alterfil. But the company is planning an onlineshop so I hope we’ll get there the thread in all 460 standard colours and soon, please…

(Nein, ich werde auch dafür nicht bezahlt. Ich bekomme nicht mal eine Garnbox. Ich finde den Faden nur einfach Klasse!)
