Winter Sky in Paris – Pattern for a minicape/ maxicowl

Finally the photo I’ve promised that shows how it looks when worn.

Ich trage das Teil viel, seit es fertig ist, denn es paßt sowohl über den Pulli (unter die Jacke), ersetzt dort den Schal und schützt an zugigen Orten die Schultern, als auch über einen engen Mantel, wo es nicht nur für Wärme sorgt, sondern als Fashion-Statement gleich drei Trends dieses Winters aufgreift: den Poncho/Cape-Trend, den Grobstrick-Trend und die Trendfarbe grau. 🙂

I’am actually wearing it a lot since it is finished. I can wear it over a sweater (under a coat) where it keeps the neck warm, replacing a scarf and also protects she shoulders in drafty places. Or I wear ot over a tight fitting coat for extra warmth, but also as fashion statement which fits in three of this winter’s trends: The poncho/cape trend, the knitwear trend and the fashion color gray. 🙂

Also ein einfaches Teil, mit dem man Basiskleidung auch gleich modisch anpassen kann. Ohne daß jeder zweite damit rumläuft, weil es bei dieser oder jener Kette gerade im Angebot war.

So an easy to make piece that gives any simple basic clothes a fashionable touch. Without having to wear something that is worn by everyone else because it was on sale at one of the big clothes retailers.

Trotzdem will ich das Geheimnis der Anfertigung nicht für mich behalten, hier ist die Anleitung für alle: Winter Sky in Paris.

5er Nadeln und dickes “Merino Sport” von katja (Was man in ganz vielen Farben in der Maschenkunst bekommt, auch wenn der Webshop das nicht vermuten läßt) sind schon fast eine Gelinggarantie. Und wer sich bisher nicht an Socken getraut hat, weil ihm dünne Nadeln UND rund stricken zu viel neues auf einmal waren…. der kann damit schon mal das Rundstricken üben. 🙂

But I don’t intend to keep the “how to make it” a secret, here is the patter for all who need a bit more warmth also: Winter Sky in Paris.

Aran weight “Merino Sport” yarn from katia, #8 (5mm) needles (which you can order from Maschenkunst in many colors, even though the web shop does not show them) will make it a quick project that hardly can go wrong. And if you were afraid to knit socks, because you thought knitting in the round and using thin needles would be to much new… take this to practise knitting in the round and then cast on your first socks. 🙂

Loop is tamed

HalswärmerSo, den Loop habe ich gebändigt und das Ergebnis ist dieser Riesenkragen oder Minicape, je nach dem, wie man das sieht.

I managed to tame the loop and the result is this huge collar or mini capelett, depending on what you want to call it.

Knitting was quick and easy and it did not require blocking for a change, steaming was enough. 🙂

Schnell und einfach gestrickt und danach noch ein bißchen in Form gedämpft. Zur Abwechslung mal nichts mit Spannen. 🙂

Und ist genau so ausgefallen, wie ich mir das ausgedacht habe. Bild mit mir drin kommt irgendwann später, wenn ich den Photographen überredet habe.

Magic loop of hell

Es gibt ja Stricker, die finden den “Magic Loop”, also das Rumgeziehe eines zu langen Seils einer Rundstricknadel, das Nonplusultra. Ich nicht.

Magic LoopSchon unter besten Umständen finde ich es nervig und ziehe ein solides Nadelspiel jederzeit vor.

There are knitters who think the “Magic Loop” (always pulling loops of a to long cable from circs) the best technique ever for knitting in the round. Not me.

Even under best circumstances it is getting on my nerves and I prefer a good old set of dpns.

Dummerweise will ich gerade ein schnelles (so weit zumindest der Plan) Projekt starten und in der Maschenkunst fand ich zwar ohne Probleme passendes Garn, aber die Feiertage haben auch hier ihre Spuren hinterlassen: Nadelspiele aus Holz in Stärke 5 waren aus.

But I wanted to start a quick project (so far the plan…) right now and I had no problem to find wool at Maschenkunst, but the delivery problems due to snow seem to have hit here also. No 5mm dpns in wood were left.

Also Anschlag mit “Magic Loop”. Was ihr hier auf dem Bild nach zwei Tagen seht ist ungefähr die 8 Variante. (Dafür, daß ich wegen falscher Größe noch mal aufgetrennt habe kann die Technik nichts, das sind die normalen Risiken und Nebenwirkungen, wenn man seine Muster selber macht. Aber der Rest…) Gut, daß das Garn von katia unter mehrfachem aufribbeln nicht sehr leidet.

So casting on with “Magic Loop”. What you see on the pic after two days is about version 8. (I frogged once due to wrong size. That was not due to that technique, that is just the normal side effects of making ones own patters. But the other ones…) Luckily the yarn from katia supports frogging quite well.

Maschen auf dem Nadelspiel ausrichten geht wesentlich einfacher. Und spätestens nach der ersten Runde kann nichts mehr passieren. Nicht so mit dieser bescheuerten Technik… bei jedem Rausziehen des Seils innerhalb der ersten Runde kann man das Strickstück versehentlich verdrehen. Und nicht nur in der ersten Runde… in der zweiten geht es auch noch. *nervnervnerv*

Wenn das magisch ist, dann ganz sicher schwarze Magie…

It is so much easier to keep the stitches straight after the cast on. And once you have done your first round you are safe. Not so for that stupid technique: Every time you have to pull the cable out within the first round you have a chance to twist your cast on stitches. And not only while the first round… it is still possible for the second round, also. *gnagnagnagna*

If that is magic, then it must be black one…

Coquille in klein(er)

Small(er) Coquille

Nachdem mein Coquille Schal ja doch recht flott von der Hand ging und sich beim Tragen extrem bewährt hat, weil er unter einer Jacke den Hals und die Schultern warm hält und sich sehr schön legt, dabei aber nicht aufträgt, dachte ich, einer als Geschenk sollte auch noch vor Weihnachten fertig werden. Allerdings in der kleineren Größe.

Tuch, Schal CoquilleWie man sieht ist der nach dem Spannen auch noch ganz schön groß geworden.

Since my Coquille Shawl had been knitting quite fast and has proven to be extremely comfortable while wearing (it warms neck, throat and shoulder and sits very comfortably and flat under a jacket) I thought that one more should be possible to do before Christmas. This time the smaller size.

Which is quite big also after blocking.

Gestrickt wieder nach der Anleitung von Mary Lou Egan in knitty, diesmal mit einem 100g Knäuel “Zauberball” von Schoppel Wolle in der Farbe “U-Boot”. (Wie so oft aus der Maschenkunst.) Die Farbe kommt auf dem Bild leider nicht so gut rüber.

Genau ein Knäuel von der Wolle zu besitzen ist übrigens für starke Nerven, am Ende waren genau 4g übrig… *uff* Aber meine Schwägerin hat sich sehr gefreut. Sie mag Schals. *uff* Richtig geraten. 🙂

The pattern is again from Mary Lou Egan in knitty, this time I used a 100g ball “Zauberball” from Schoppel Wolle, the colorway is called “U-Boot. (From Maschenkunst, where I buy most of my yarn.) The colors do not come out to well in the pic, sorry.

Knitting with no more than one ball of yarn is for people who like some thrill. 4g of yarn were left at the end… *uff* My SIL loved the gift. She likes scarfs. *uff* Good guess. 🙂

Warm Coquille

Tuch CoquilleJetzt ist es fertig, mein Tuch.

Now my shawl is finished. It was fun to knit, the color runs shouldn’t have been any shorter. There is a bit more green-yellow in the blue than what I normally have. But over all I like the result.

(And since I had no one to take a picture of me the old chair had to model it.)

Stricken machte sehr viel Spaß, die Farbverläufe dürften kürzer wahrlich nicht sein und es ist etwas mehr gelb-grün im Blau, als ich das sonst so habe. Aber das Ergebnis gefält mir. (Und weil ich mal wieder niemanden habe, der mich mit dem Tuch photographiert, muß der alte Stuhl als Model herhalten…)

Es ist nach dem Spannen wieder ein wenig zusammengegangen, aber da ich sehr stark gespannt habe, war das zu erwarten. Schließlich ist es  Sockenwolle, die hält einiges mehr aus, als feines Lace Garn.

Coquille Tuch

After blocking I let it relax for another day and it went back a bit. But I blocked it really hard, so this was no surprise. And after all, it’s sock wool, more stable than typical lace yarn

Und so kühl wie es allmählich ist, darf es mir jetzt auch gleich die Schultern wärmen.

And since it is quite cool already, the shawl can start warming my shoulders right now.

Hier stehe ich, und spann nicht anders…

Here I am… blocking

Tuch Coquille, gespanntDas scheint zumindest im Moment mein Motto zu sein. Damit wäre dann tatsächlich alles “weggespannt”, was noch so an Stricksachen herumlag.

That seems to be my motto of the moment. That is the last unblocked item so far. Nothing around that waits blocking.

Aus der Herbstausgabe von Knitty hatte es mir dieses Tuch angetan, ich brauchte was relativ hirnloses und ich hatte ein gewisses Bedürfnis nach Wärme, daher kam diesmal Sockenwolle zum Einsatz. Ein langer Farbverlauf sollte es sein und ich wurde wie meistens in der Maschenkunst fündig. “New Duetto” von Katja kam zum Einsatz.

The pattern is from the fall issue of knitty, I liked it instantly and when I needed some mindless knitting this was my choice. Also I felt like some more substantial than lace. So this time it’s sock yarn. I was looking for long color runs and my LYS Maschenkunst offered me “New Duetto” from Katia.

Gestrickt war es recht schnell und einfach, beim Spannen hätte ich mir jetzt etwas klarere Instruktionen gewünscht, wie das mit den vielen Godets so gemeint ist. Zumal die Anleitung als Größe nur “klein” und “groß” kennt, aber keine Maße angibt. Letzteres wäre dann doch auch hilfreich gewesen. (Natürlich habe ich die Version in groß gestrickt, muß sich ja lohnen.)

Da es jetzt ja schon recht kühl ist, habe ich jedenfalls gute Verwendung dafür.

Knitting was quick and easy, but for blocking I would have prefered some more detailled instructions, what to do with all those gussets. That the pattern gives no measurements, only size “small” and “large” was no help either. (Of course I did “large”, what else?)

It’s finished absolutely in time, since it’s getting quite cold already.

(Nearly) Knitting in Public

WWKIP Day in der MaschenkunstSo ganz öffentlich war unser Stricktreff in der Maschenkunst zum heutigen WWKIP Tag (Tag des weltweiten Strickens in der Öffentlichkeit) ja nicht. Denn wir saßen drinnen im Wollladen.

Auf die vor der Tür aufgestellte Bank haben wir angesichts der immer wieder heftigen Regenschauer dankend verzichtet, innen war es gemütlicher. (Wie man sieht.)

Und auch wenn wir die Tür offen hatten… so wirklich öffentlich war es nicht.

Our meeting at Maschenkunst for the WWKIP Day was not really public. Because we sat inside the shop.

Due to partially heavy rain no one wanted to sit outside on the bank in front of the store… as you can see on the pic we were more comfy inside. And even though the door was mostly open… inside a shop is not really a public place.

Denn so einfach ist das nicht. Zumindest in Deutschland wollen Behörden in Städten in der Regel Geld für die Genehmigung öffentlich zu Stricken (wenn man es vorher Plakatieren und Ankündigen will, was ja Sinn der Sache ist) und außerdem muß ein kostenloses Klo in der Nähe sein. Und das… mag in den USA gut funktionieren, in den meisten Ländern Europas kann man entweder eine Toilette haben oder es kann kostenlos sein. 😀 (Korrektur: Ich sehe, die Bedingung mit der kostenlosen Toilette ist auf der offiziellen Webseite nicht mehr zu finden. Da hat wohl doch mal jemand den Realitätscheck gemacht…)

Frau Maschenkunst

Because it’s not so easy to organize a really public knitting. Many cities want money if you want to organize a knitting in a public place and then the official rules claim that there has to be a free toilet nearby. That might work in the US, but in most European countries you can either have it for free or you can have a public bathroom. 😀 (Edit: I just checked the offical website for the WWKIP Day, they removed that condition. Someone did a reality check…)

Wobei das der Guten Laune keine Abbruch tat.

Oder schaut Frau Maschenkunst (aka Daniela Johannsenova) nur deswegen so fröhlich, weil sie diese Kiste mit wunderschönem Artyarns für sich selber verarbeiten will? Ne, Daniela, so geht das nicht! Laß mir auch noch was! 😉

But all that did not stop us from having fun!

Or does Frau Maschenkunst (aka Daniela Johannsenova) only look so happy, because she wants do use the whole box of beautifl Artyarns all by herself? O no, Daniela, you wont do that! Leave some for me! 😉

Summerstitches

Manche Dinge sind offensichtlich ansteckend. Und so kann man offensichtlich nicht mit Bärbel zusammensein, ohne daß einem dann “Häkeln” als Technik einfällt. Aber vielleicht von vorne…

Outfit Motivationsmonat Mai 2008Letztes Jahr im Mai hatte ich mir ja dieses Outfit genäht, nur fehlte mir die Handtasche. Zum einen wußte ich nicht recht, was ich überhaupt wollte und als sich langsam ein Bild ergab, nämlich weiß und sehr groß, gab es natürlich nichts passendes zu kaufen.

Und da meine Projekte ja oft aus dem entstehen, was mich umgibt… lag der Entschluß zumindest nicht fern, eine Tasche zu häkeln.

Last year in may I made this outfit for the “Motivationsmonat” sew along. the problem that remained over the winter was the handbag question. It took me months to find out what I wanted and in the end I couldn’t find anything I liked. But at least I had decided I wanted it white and large.

And evidently it is not possible to hang around with Bärbel without ending with an idea for a bag in crochet…

HäkeltascheUnd so bin ich vor gut zwei Wochen in die Maschenkunst getrabt und habe mich mit 500g Garn eingedeckt.

Ich habe mir für “linen” von “katja” entschieden, denn es sollte nicht zu dick sein und reine Baumwolle ist schwerer als dieses Mischgarn. Außerdem nutzte ich die Gelegenheit, mal eine der ergonomischen Nadeln von Clover in 3,25 auszuprobieren.

Die Tasche sieht im Moment nicht sehr aufregend aus, aber da ich bislang fast nur feste Maschen gehäkelt habe, sind es eine ganze Menge Maschen. Aber ich habe endlich die geplante Breite erreicht, jetzt geht es nur noch für eine lange Zeit “Gradeaus” nach oben. Was schon klar ist, ist daß das Garn nicht reichen wird. Ich habe Daniela von der Maschenkunst zwar beschrieben, wie groß ich sie haben will und die festen Maschen fressen wirklich eine Menge garn, aber die Schätzung mit 500g lag weit daneben.

Das Garn häkelt sich gewöhnungsbedürftig, denn es ist nicht sehr fest gedreht. Und die Häkelnadel ist eine Krankheit. Für meine Häkeltechnik ist der breite und etwas eckige Griff absolut nicht geeignet. Ich muß die Nadel mit den Fingern drehen können und mit dem Griff geht das nicht. Aber da ich auch noch Garn brauche, sind bis dahin hoffentlich auch die KnitPro Häkelnadeln angekommen, die ich ohnehin lieber gehabt hätte…

So I went to Maschenkunst about two weeks ago and came back with 500g ot “linen” from “katia” and a Clover crochet hook. I wanted a not to thick yarn and the cotton linen blend has the advantage that it weigth a little less than pure cotton.

The bag so far does not look very thrilling, but as I’m using mostly single crochet there are already a lot of stitches done. I have reached the full width now and the next weeks will be simply crocheting straight on. What I can already say is that the yarn will not be enough. Daniela from Maschenkunst did a guess we both thought to be genereous, but I’ll need more of it.

The yarn is not the best choice for crochet as it is not very firmly twisted, but I’m getting used to it. The crochet hook on the contrary… my technique needs a round handle because I’m turning the hook with my fingers. If people see me crochet they usually get a strange look, so evidently I’m doing it not the “right” way. Well, I’ll have to get more yarn and I’ll get another hook, I hope the ones from Knit Pro have arrived now…

Endlich Wolle!

Finally wool!

Meine derzeitige Stola ist ja beim letzten Rapport angelangt, also wird es Zeit, an das nächste Projekt zu denken, der Titelpulli aus Michael Weinreichs “Männermaschen” soll es werden. Daß Schachenmayr Extra Merino offensichtlich keine Standardqualität ist hatte ich ja schon gemerkt. Wir haben ja nur etliche Wollgeschäfte hier, aber entweder die haben gar kein Schachenmayr, oder sie haben diese Qualität nicht oder nur in rosa und schwarz. Mein französischer Freund wollte aber blau.

Doch Daniela in der Maschenkunst in Köln konnte mir das Garn bestellen. Und diese Woche hatte ich endlich Zeit, es auch abzuholen. Und nicht nur das… ich wollte 19 Knäuel und das zwanzigste bekam ich obendrein geschenkt! Danke, sage ich!

(Jetzt kann ich auch sicher sein, daß das Garn für zwei oder drei Maschenproben reicht, denn die Stola hat mir gezeigt, daß ich unterschiedliche Garne offensichtlich unterschiedlich fest verstricke. Und die Knit-Pro Nadeln gibt es ja nicht nur in halben, sondern auch in viertel Schritten…)

My current shawl is in the last pattern repeat on the needles, so it’s about time to think about the next project, the sweater from the cover of Michael Weinreichs “Männermaschen” will be next on my needles. I had thought “Extra Merino” from Schachenmayr to be quite a standard quality, available nearly anywhere. I had already found out that this is not the case: Cologne has several yarn shops, but either they don’t carry the brand at all or they don’t have the quality or they only have it only in pink and black. But my french friend who will wear the sweater in the end, wants blue.

But Daniela from Maschenkunst in Cologne could order it for me. And now it finally arrived and this week I had time to fetch it in the shop. And not only that, I had ordered 19 skeins and got number 20 for free! Thank you!

(Now I can be sure that I will have enough yarn for swatching. My shawl experience showed me, that I seem to knit firmer or looserm according to the yarn quality. And Knit-Pro needles are not only in half-sizes available but in quarter-sizes….)

Strickspaß weltweit

gab es gestern wieder. Es war ja der Tag des weltweiten öffentlichen Strickens.

Und da ich dieses Jahr nicht in Paris sondern in Köln weilte, begab ich mich an einen Ort, den ich nach Beschreibung des Angebots durch Frau mhs wohlweislich gemieden hatte. Aber gestern mußte ich dann doch in die Maschenkunst. Proppenvoll war es… das Sofa war natürlich besetzt, aber auch auf Stühlen und Bierbänken saßen wir quasi mehrreihig und haben gestrickt. Mit Bärbel, Aud, Frau mhs und MichaelDUS waren ein paar bekannte Gesichter da, aber ich kam auch mit etlichen bislang unbekannten ins Gespräch. (Bilder keine… mein Herzblatt hatte die Kamera dabei… und hat nicht mal Bilder damit gemacht. *grr*)

Daniela, die kreative Frau hinter der Maschenkunst hatte sogar Namensschilder vorbereitet. Und ein Tütchen mit Wolle gab es obedrein, gesponsort von einer spanischen Firma namens Katia. Ich habe noch nie von denen gehört, aber das tweedartige Garn mit hohen Seidenanteil fühlt sich wunderbar an. Mal sehen, was mir für das kleine Knäuel einfällt… Vielleicht stricke ich mir doch mal was größeres und kaufen noch viele Schwesterlein dazu? Naja, erst mal mein Sockengarn “aufstricken”.

Glücklicherweise war der Laden so voll, daß ich die schönen Garne in den Regalen nicht so genau ansehen konnte… und schaffte es daher, stark zu bleiben und nichts zu kaufen. (Diesmal… )

Dummerweise kam ich dann an einer anderen Ecke Kölns auf dem Weg in die U-Bahn an einem anderen Wollgeschäft vorbei, wo etliche Wollen von Lana Grossa, Debbie Bliss oder Lang für nur einen Euro zu haben waren. *Bong* Verloren… ich brauche jetzt Anleitung für kleine Mengen (einem bis sechs Knäuel)  dicker Garne… *gg*

Knitting fun was yesterday It was WWKIP-day.

And as I was in Cologne this year and not in Paris I went to a place I had been avoiding so far. After some descriptions of Frau mhs of the yummy yarns they have there. But yesterday I had to go to Maschenkunst. The small shop was really full of knitters. On a sofa, on chairs and on benches we were sitting. Im several rows. As often there were familiar faces: Bärbel, Aud, Frau mhs and http://www.amazon.de/MÀnnermaschen-Newcomer-Evergreens-Michael-Weinreich/dp/3772465811/. But quickly I was chatting with so far unknown knitters. (Sorry, no pics. My husband had the camera with him. And he didn’t even use it thar weekend… 🙁 ).

Daniela, the creative owner of Maschenkunst had even prepared name badge for us. And a cute baggy with a ball of yarn. The Spanish company  katia had sponsored those give aways. I had never heard of that company, but the ball of yarn feels delicous. Tweedlike, with a lot of silk in it. Whatever I’ll vome up with for that cute ball. Buying some siblings of it and knitting something bigger. Who knows… First I want to finish my sockyarn…

Luckily there were so many people in the shop that I couldn’t see the yarns too well… so I could remain strong and not buy yarn. (For this day…)

But then, at another corner of Cologne, just before going to my underground… I fell over another yarn shop that had put several yarns form Lana Grossa, Lang or Debby Bliss on sale. One EUR per ball… I did so much lost… Now I need ideas for small amounts (one to six balls) of chunky yarns… *gg*
