… mehr war zur Frage nach einem Weihnachtswunsch aus meinem Mann nicht herauszubekommen.

Cookie and Chocolate and something to play with and a  surprise, that was all I got from DH when I asked him what he might want for Christmas. (I just recognized that I forgot to tell you that story, so there is still something Christmas related.) I might have to explain the phrase, because it refers to two popular adds in Germany. One was for a cookie with a chocolate side that was marketed as “you don’t have to decide between cookie and chocolate, you can have cookie and chocolate now”. (Yes, we did have chocolate coated cookies before in Germany. So if you don’t have a new product you need more clever marketing. I do not even remember which brand it was…) The other used to be a commercial where a father went on a business trip and then promises his kid to bring him a gift when he returns. So the kid asks for chocolate, something to play with and a surprise. So poor daddy would have to buy three gifts, if there was not the super great “Überraschungs-Ei” (=surprise egg). (Today it is called Kinder Überraschung, but the product is the same. An egg shaped shell of chocolate with a tiny toy inside which is a surprise because you don’t know what you will get.)

So, was macht man mit so einer Angabe?

Man läßt den Zufall walten. Ich machte einen Spziergang über den Weihnachtsmarkt am Neumarkt und kaufte an jeder fünften Bude den billigsten Artikel. 🙂

Geschenke vom WeihnachtsmarktSo.. what to make of this?

I took a stroll over the Christmas market at Neumarkt and bought the cheapest thing at every fifth booth. 🙂

Und das kam dabei raus. (Klick aufs Bild für die größere Ansicht.) Die Freßbuden habe ich rausgelassen, denn eine vier Tage alte Bratwurstsemmel mag keiner mehr essen. Und es ist erstaunlich, für wie wenig Geld man was bekommt. Die meisten Sachen lagen zwischen 70 Cent und 5 EUR. Einen Stand mit Lederwaren habe ich ausgelassen, denn da kostete das billigsten Kartenetui 14 EUR und war häßlich und nutzlos. Die warmen Puschen (hinter der Unicef-Karte) kosteten 7 EUR und die Schokolade war teuer. Aber Schokolade mußte sein, die war ja gewünscht. Das ist eine Schraube und eine Mutter aus Schokolade und so exakt gearbeitet, daß man sie wirklich ineinander drehen kann. Das war’s dann wert. (Und ich weiß jetzt, daß der “Weihnachtsmarkt der Engel” genau 95 Buden hatte. *g*)

And that’s the result. (Click on the pic shows a bigger version.) I left out all the food booths because a four day old sausage in a bun is no pleasure at all. And it is surprising how much you get for few money. Nearly all gifts were between 0,50 EUR and 5 EUR. I only left out a booth with Italian leatherware were the cheapest thing was an ugly card holder which would be useless to DH. The warm slippers (behind the UNICEF postcard) were 7 EUR and the chocolate was really expensive. But that was okay because I would have to buy chocolate anyhow (see above) and it is not only good chocolate, it is also shaped as screw and nut and they are functional! That was worth it. (And I now know that the “Market of the Angels” had 95 booths in 2011.)

Ich habe alles einzeln eingepackt, beschriftet (“Überraschung 1”, “Überraschung 2”,… “Schokolade”, “Keks” – der kam aus meiner eigenen Produktion) mit einem langen AlterfilS 80 aneinandergeknotet und dann durfte mein Herzblatt Stück für Stück auspacken. Kommt davon, wenn man so was wünscht.

Then I wrapped each item, stuck labels to it (“Surprise 1”, “Surprise 2”,… “chocolate”, “Cookies” – I took one I had made myself for Christmas), connected all parcels with one long thread AlterfilS 80 and then under the Christmas Tree DH had a lot of items to unwrap. You get what you deserve if you make wishes like that…

(Ganz am Ende hing dann auch noch ein “richtiges” Geschenk, ein schönes antiquarisches Buch. Ich bin ja dann doch nicht so.)

(The long thread ended in a real gift then, I found a beautiful antique book for him also. I’m not that stone-hearted.)

Pouch for money gift

Der Kalender ist schon auf dem Weg zu Sara nach Österreich. Mein Dank an alle für die netten Kommentare!

TäschchenUnd jetzt geht es endlich mit den selber gemachten Weihnachts-geschenken los.

Von Frau mhs habe ich mich zu diesem runden Täschlein inspirieren lassen. Geldgeschenke sind ja immer schwierig, aber da ist es gut drin aufbewahrt und weitere Geschenke für den speziellen Zweck können da auch gesammelt werden.

Finally I’ll start to show my self made Christmas gifts.

Frau mhs had inspired my to make a round pouch to give some money. I am not to fond of giving money, but this will be collected for a bigger project over the next years and so the self sewn pouch will keep the money safe over the years.

Genäht ist sie dreilagig, Baumwollstoff mit Weihnachtsdruck, Vlies und Futerstoff. Auf die Oberseite habe ich dann noch fraihand gequiltete bzw. gestickt. Richtig begeistert war ich von dem Stickgarn. Metallicgarne fand ich bislang immer etwas “zickig” (ich habe Madeira und Mettler) aber dieses hier von Robison-Anton über Alterfil ist absolut genial! Es ist weicher als andere die ich bisher hatte, es läuft problemlos in die Maschine, auch wenn man nicht extra langsam näht, keine Fadenrisse,… ich brauchte nicht mal eine Metallicnadel, Titan Nadel von Organ in Stärke 75 machte den Job einwandfrei. 🙂

Tasche RückseiteUnd auf der Rückseite dann der Reißverschluß.

Nur wie man so eine Tasche richtig rund bekommt bleibt mir ein Rätsel. Da ich die Nahtzugaben nicht einschneiden konnte, sondern versäubern mußte, hat das nicht so gut funktioniert.

What remained a mystery is how to make it really round. Since I had to zigzag the seam allowances I could not clip them. So it couldn’t work out well…

That might also be due to the construction, I made a sandwich from cotton print, batting and lining fabric. On the front side I added a bit of free motion quilting and embroidery, nothing special, just quickly done. But what helped me a lot was the thread. So far I’ve found metallic thread (I’ve had Madeira and Mettler) a bit difficult, you had to sew slowly, it tended to break… but this time I used the Robison-Anton Metallic thread by Alterfil and it made such a difference! It is softer than what I am used to, it didn’t break, I could sew fast and I didn’t even need a special needle for metallic thread, my usual Titan Embroidery Needle by Organ in Size 75 did it perfectly fine. 🙂

Little Christmas baggies 2011

SäckchenAuch dieses Jahr habe ich einen Teil meiner Stoffreste zu kleinen Beutelchen verarbeitet, kombiniert mit Weihnachtsstoffen (wie immer von Toto in Paris, denn für Einmalgegenstände sind die billigen hübsch genug).

Like every year I made a lot of small bags for Christmas give-aways for colleagues and so on. They will hold just some cookies, a bit of chocolate and a tiny chocolate angel or Santa Claus. So not real gifts, but enough to make people smile.

I used remnants from my stash and combined them with typical Christmas-prints (which I purchased at Toto in Paris, because they are much cheaper then here and nice enough to be used once). All in all I made 20, but the first ones were given away as soon as they were finished.

Im ganzen waren es 20 davon, aber die ersten wurden quasi direkt von der Nähmaschine aus verschenkt… Gefüllt werden sie dann mit ein paar Keksen, etwas Schokolade und einem Mini-Schokoweihnachtsmann von Lindt. Eben keine richtigen Geschenke, sondern halt so eine nette Kleinigkeit für die Kollegen und ein paar andere Leute.

Als Modell habe ich mir die Japanische Knotentasche genommen, habe aber den runden Boden weggelassen und wegen der schmalen Träger auch etwas anders verarbeitet. Letztes Jahr hatte ich die Anleitung schon im Auge, dachte aber, mir würde die Zeit nicht reichen. (Dieses Jahr habe ich ein wenig zeitiger angefangen.) Letztlich ging es aber schneller als die Origami Taschen vom letzten Jahr.

Ich hoffe nur, bis nächstes Jahr finde ich eine weitere originelle Taschenform, meine Kollegen wären sonst sehr enttäuscht. 😮 Falls also jemand Vorschläge hat, immer her damit!

The idea I used was called “Japanische Knotentasche“ in the German hobbyschneiderin forum, I changed it a bit to make it quicker to sew and also more adapted to the small scale. I had already thought about those last year but then I though I couldn’t make it in the time I had. (This year I had started earlier). But in the end it was quicker to make than last years Christmas Origami.

I hope I’ll find another interesting bag shape for next year, my colleagues would be disappointed if not. 😮 So if you know something, let me know!

Quickly Pressed Christmas Trees

WeihnachtskartenMeistens brauche ich Möglichkeiten, schnell Weihnachtskarten zu Basteln. Und ich versuche, mit vorhandenem Material zu arbeiten und nicht vor allem mit extra gekauften Weihnachtsstoffen.

Diese stilisierten Bäumchen waren vor zwei Jahren das Ergebnis meiner Überlegungen.

Mir gefiels, die Empfänger haben sich auch alle gefreut und man braucht nur einige Stoffreste, Vliesofix und Karton für Karten. Und ein Bügeleisen. Die werden auch in letzter Sekunde noch fertig und man kann wirklich jeden Stoff nehmen, der einem farblich gefällt, gerade dickere Wollstoffe geben eine schöne Struktur. Und wer es bunt mag, nimmt farbigen Karton als Grundlage.

Und wer es im Gegensatz zu mir nicht so gerne grafisch und kitschfrei mag, der kann natürlich auch noch Pailetten oder Strass aufkleben, Glitter drüberstreuen oder was auch immer. 🙂

WeihnachtskartenIf you are like me you will need last minute Christmas Cards that are supposed to be quick to make. Those fulfill the requirements. You only need Vliesofix/ Bondaweb, some fabric scrabs, cards and our iron.

Those I made two years ago and they were not only super quick, the recipients liked them also. That they are quite kitsch-free and more on the graphic side is another plus for me.

They work with any fabric, but paticularily well with thicker, struktured fabrics like coat wool. You can choose the colors as you like and if you want it more colorful use cards in different colors. (For those who like more kitsch: yes, you can add other decoration and glue on pearls, glitter or whatever.)

Detailed instructions are in the file above, but only in German. But basically you draw a equilateral triangle and a small square on the Vliesofix, press that to your fabric, cut out the shapes, but the triangle in stripes and press it to the card with some distance between the stripes. That’s all. (There are pictures in the instruction file, so look at it and if something isn’t clear yet feel free to ask in the comment section.)

There were also gifts for me

Nachdem ich jetzt schon gezeigt habe, was ich Weihnachten verschenkt habe, gibt es hier auch endlich einen Blick auf die Geschenke die ich bekommen habe. Zumindest auf den Teil, der mit Handarbeit zu tun hat. 🙂

Weihnachtsgeschenke 2010Now I will finally also show what I got for Christmas. At least the “crafty” part of my gifts.

The book “The Art of Manipulating Fabric” has been on my wish list for long and now I finally got it. That is not to read from cover to cover, but to drool over it and then read it in small portions. Because this is information condensed.

Das Buch “The Art of Manipulating Fabric” ist schon lange auf meiner Wunschliste und diesmal hat sich jemand erbarmt. Das ist jetzt nichts um es von vorne bis hinten durchzulesen, sondern eher um die Bilder zu bewundern und dann in kleinen Portionen zu verdauen. Denn das Buch ist Informationskonzentrat.

Auch schon lange gewünscht und echter Luxus die Schere im Eiffelturmdesign von Maison Sajou. Ein wahres Schmuckstück, fast zu Schade zum Benutzen…

Also among my wishes for some time the small scissors “Eiffel Tower” from Maison Sajou. Nearly to beautiful to use them.

And then this wonderful fabric with the cutest penguins of all! But this is not only the fabric, no that’s a project bag for my knitting. That was not on my list, the gift was more than unexpected, but crafty friends know what one needs. 😉 And a project bag is really useful, because I use cotton shopping bags which are not always the best choice. But that was not all, the even cooler gift is not visible: My friend will sew me a new fleece jacket. She has chosen the fabric so I am really curious what it will be. Flashy, I guess. :o) I might draw my own pattern for that occasion. That will be worth it.

Und dann noch diesen wunderbaren Stoff mit den süßesten Pinguinen von allen! Aber es ist nicht der Stoff, nein das ist eine Tasche für mein Strickzeug. Die ich wirklich brauchen kann, denn bisher behelfe ich mir mit Leinentaschen, die nicht immer optimal sind. Das Geschenk war nun nicht auf meiner Wunschliste, zumal es völlig unerwartet kam, aber kreative Freundinnen wissen eben eh, was frau so braucht. :o) Aber das ist noch nicht mal das coolste, das coolste ist noch nicht zu sehen: Ich bekomme eine neue Fleece Jacke! Der Stoff ist schon ausgesucht, habe ich erfahren und ich bin sehr gespannt, wie er sein wird. Irgendwas aufregendes, da bin ich mir sicher. Ich denke, ich werde zu der Gelegenheit mal meinen eigenen Schnitt zeichnen. Das ist es auf alle Fälle wert.

Merry Christmas!

WeihnachtsgeschenkeZwar ist Weihnachten schon wieder halb vorbei, aber trotzdem wünsche ich allen meinen Lesern ganz froher Festtage! Ein gesegnetes Weihnachtsfest für alle die Weihnachten feiern und ein paar schöne und ruhige freie Tage für alle die damit nichts am Hut haben!

Christmas is nearly over (in Germany we have the 26th as “second day of Christmas” holiday) but I am still wishing a merry Christmas to all of you! And for those who do not celebrate Christmas I wish you some nice and calm time with family or not, whatever you prefer!

Weihnachtsgeschenke 2010Gestern habe ich es aber wahrlich nicht mehr an den Rechner geschafft, denn ich wollte noch alle Verpackungen fertig machen.

Wenn schon nicht alle Geschenke selbergemacht sind, so sollten es wenigstens die Verpackungen sein. Außerdem reduziert das die Restekiste wieder etwas… 😉

Yesterday I had no time to write, because I had to finish the gift wrappings.

Not all my gifts are home made, but the packages are. Also that reduces my scraps. 😉

Weihnachtsverpackungen 2010Ein Teil der Sachen war schon letzte Woche per Post auf die Reise gegangen, für ein paar andere gibt es noch einen Übergabetermin. So der Schnee es zuläßt. Denn so romatisch weiße Weihnachten sind, wenn der örtliche Winterdienst das nicht im Griff hat, dann hat es auch ein paar Nachteile….

Some of the gifts had been posted last week, some others are still here and will be handed over soon. If the snow allows the trip. White Christmas are super romantic, but if the local winter services have general problem with snow, there are some disadvantages also…

Um meine Kollegen und ein paar andere Leute mit Keksen zu beglücken, nähe ich jedes Jahr kleine Beutelchen. (Reduziert auch meine Restekiste.) Anforderung: Es soll schnell zu nähen sein und trotzdem mit Aha-Effekt.

Every year I make small bags to give away some home made cookies to co workers and some friends. (That also reduces my remnants box.) The basic idea is to find something that is quick to make but has something special.

This year I choose “Origami Drawstring Bag” from Mai. The have something special, that did work out.

Dafür hatte ich mir dieses Jahr die “Origami Drawstring Bag” von Mai ausgesucht. Also das mit dem Effekt kam gut hin, das Säckchen hat nämlich auch noch Außentaschen.

Das mit dem “schnell genäht” weniger, denn ich mußte den Stoff doppeln oder, wo ich dickere Stoffe genommen habe, einfassen. Dickere Stoffe sind suboptimal, aber wenn man die Seitennähte nicht ganz bis unten schließt, lassen sich auch diese wenden. Und sie verbrauchen viel Stoff, eine Kantenlänge von 30cm ist wenigstens nötig, damit nicht nur ein Kekschen reinpaßt. Mein Berg an Stoffresten ist sichtbar kleiner geworden.

“Quick to make” they were not, because I had to prepare the fabric with lining or to make a binding for thicker fabric. Thicker fabrics are not the best for that pattern, but if you do not close the side seams down to the bottom but leave 0.5 cm – 1 cm open you can turn the fabric and it works. They also require a lot of fabric. To make a small bag that holds more than one cookie I needed squares of fabric 30 cm x 30 cm. My mountain of scraps got visibly smaller.

Das Bild zeigt übrigens nur einen kleinen Teil meiner Produktion. Da ich dieses Jahr spät dran war, waren sie fast so schnell verschenkt wie genäht.

(Und falls jemand eine Anleitung kennt für schnell genähte und trotzdem irgendwie besondere Täschchen… bitte hinterlaßt mir einen Link im Kommentar, ich brauche ja für nächstes Jahr wieder eine Idee… 😉 )

My coolest gift!

Natürlich habe ich nicht nur Geschenke gemacht, sondern auch welche bekommen. Meine Familie hat auch fleißig meine Näh- und Handarbeitssucht unterstützt, so daß ich jetzt mal ein neues Bücherregal bräuchte…

Aber am coolsten fand ich das hier:

Nähgarnsortiment AlterfilIch habe den Sortimentskasten mit Alterfil S120 bekommen!

Of course I did not only make gifts, I also recieved some. My family was willing to support my crafty addiction so my craft book shelf needs an extension now.

But the coolest gift was the box with 52 different colours of Alterfil S120. (Including the usefull box.)

Aber die Garnbox kam gar nicht von meiner Familie, auch nicht von Freunden… nein, Herr Seitz und Herr Amrhein haben sich offensichtlich mein Gesabbel bis zum bitteren Ende durchgelesen und fanden es auch unfair, daß ich die Box immer nur verschenke.

Und jetzt habe ich meine eigene und sie kommt direkt von Alterfl aus der Fabrik. Wie cool ist das denn? (Und Lebkuchen haben sie auch noch dazu gelegt, die sind aber schon fast aufgegessen. 🙂 )

But the box of thread did not come from my family neither from friends… no, Mr Seitz and Mr Amrhein evidently read all my blubbering to the very end and they also thought it unfair that I always give the box away and never keep one for myself.

So I got a box with my favourite thread directly from the Alterfil factory. How cool is that?! (And they also added a regional special gingerbread. Which is nearly eaten by now. 🙂 )

So many, many, many thanks dear Santa Alterfilclaus!

… durften meine Weihnachtsgeschenke eine Weile herumliegen.

I didn’t have to much time to bring out christmas decoration this year, but I used the presents as decorations… before my brother picked them up to deliver them to the rest of the family.

GeschenkeZwar gibt es bei uns keine Riesengeschenke, aber dafür werden sie liebevoll verpackt.

(Und kombiniert mit Weihnachtsstoffen kann man auch wieder ein paar Stoffreste verbrauchen.)

Und natürlich sind sie versandfertig, die hat nämlich mein Bruder direkt mitgenommen, die mußten nicht auf die Post. (Der Schrank bleibt aber da. *g*)

Ein gesegnetes Weihnachtsfest wünsche ich euch allen!

Karo wird Karte (Weihnachtskarten)

(From check to greeting card)

Vor Weihnachten gibt es ja immer unzähliche schöne Stoffe mit passenden Mustern, die man gerne zu Weihnachtskarten verarbeitet. Aber das wäre einmal zu einfach und zum anderen habe ich ja jede Menge Stoffreste vom Rest des Jahres und würde eigentlich lieber meine Stapel etwas reduzieren.

Also habe ich mir mal vorgenommen was im Haus so zu finden war…

ZutatenTons of cute christmas fabrics are waiting for you in shops to be turned into greeting cards and other seasonal items. But this would only make grow my stash, I want it reduced.

So I checked what I had already at home.

Da wäre schwarz.weiß karierter Stoff, Blumenseide in lila, Klappkarten, doppelseitige Klebefolie, Klebestift, Ausstechformen mit Weihnachtsmotiven, Skalpellmesser, Goldstift und eine Schere.

What I found was a black and white checked fabric, silk paper (also used as wrapping paper for flowers), plain white greeting cards, double sided adhesive sheet, glue stick, cookies cutters with christmas motivs, scalpel, golden pen and scissors.

Sterne aufklebenWenn man die Ausstechförmchen (aus Metall) fest auf die blaue Folienseite der doppelseitig klebenden Folie drückt, dann bleibt ein Abdruck zurück und man kann die Folie mit dem Messer in Form schneiden. Hier sind es Schweifsterne.

Das Trägerpapier wird entfernt und die Formen werden auf den Stoff geklebt.

If you press the (metall) cookie cutters in the blue plastic side of the double adhesive sheet you’ll be able to see the imprint and you can take the skalpel and cut the sheet into the desired shape. (Here I have comets.)

Then you remove the paper from the one side of the adhesive sheet and press the shapes on the fabric (where they will stick).

Sterne ausgeschnittenDann kommt die Stoffschere zum Einsatz und die Kometensterne werden sauber ausgeschnitten. Hierfür sollte die Schere scharf und spitz sein und man kann sich daran auch nicht vorbei mogeln, indem man einen Rollschneider benutzt. 😉

(Aber wenn die Schere gut ist, ist es nicht weiter schwierig.)

Then you need good scissors, sharp and pointy. Cutting out the shapes from the fabric is very easy then.

Seidenpapier zuschneidenDie weißen Karten sind so natürlich etwas fade, deswegen bekommen sie mit Seidenpapier Farbe.

Dazu schneide ich die Folie im Format einer halben Karte zu, klebe sie zuerst auf die Karte und dann mit der zweiten Klebeseite auf die Blumenseide.

Anschließend kann ich mit dem Skalpel das Seidenpapier bündig an der Karte abschneiden.

The white greeting cards are a bit boring, so they get colour with the tissue paper.

For that you cut the adhesive sheet in the size of half the folded greeting card. You stick the sheet to the card and then the card to the tissue paper. Then you cut along the edge of the greeting card with the skalpel.

WeihnachtskarteJetzt kommen die Stoffmotive wieder ins Spiel. (Ihr seht, ich habe auch Bäumchen gemacht.)

Die blaue Schutzfolie wird abgezogen und das Motiv auf die Karte geklebt. (Fest aufdrücken, dann hält der Stoff gut.)

Jetzt ist die Karte schon ganz nett. Aber ein bißchen was kommt noch.

Now back to the cut ornaments.

(You see I also made trees.)

Remove the blue plastic from the adhesive sheet and stick the shape on the card. (Press firmly, so the fabric will stick well.)

Now it already looks like a greeting card, but not completely finished yet.

Mit GoldstiftDer Baum bekommt noch einen kleinen Stern über die Spitze, mit dem Goldstift.

Der Effekt der Karten beruht stark auf den Farben, die kommen leider im Bild nicht gut rüber. Mein lila ist ein beinahe “liturgisches” lila und das zusammen mit Gold ergibt einen weihnachtlichen und festlichen Effekt. Auf den Bildern hier kommt es zu blau rüber.

(Man kann den gleichen Effekt auch mit rot und gold erreichen, eben mit Farbkombinationen, die man mit Weihnachten assoziert.

The tree top gets a star with the gold liner.

What creates the festive effect of the cards is mostly the colours, the purple is a quite “liturgic” one and creates with gold a very festive look. Only the pics do not catch the colour well. It’s closer to the blue on the pic than in reality.

You can create a similar effect with any colours that are associated with christmas like red and gold.

Here I tried te pics under a different light, but it still doesn’t catch the colour, it’s to red now…

WeihnachtskartenUnd hier noch eine etwas “fetzigere” Variante.

Das Seidenpapier habe ich einfach in Streifen gerissen und mit Prittstift festgeklebt.

Die Karten kam überall gut an.

I tore the tissue paper in stripes and used a gluestick to glue it to the cards.
