I’m a sofa, dress me!

Der Schnupfen ist weg und das Sofa braucht immer noch einen neuen Bezug. Einfach eine Husse drüber nähen fällt schon mal weg, denn es ist ein Klappsofa und soll das auch bleiben. Stoff düber ziehen und unten festtackern geht nicht, weil zu viel Metall. Aber die Sitz-/Liegefläche und die Seitenteile sind ganz gut von einander abgegrenzt, so daß ich sie getrennt beziehen kann.

The cold is gone and my sofa still needs a new cover. Just sewing a slipcover over the whole things is not an option, because I still want to be able to unfold it as a bed. Just covering it with fabric and using the staple gun isn’t an option either, because there is to much metal underneath. But the sitting/sleeping part and the sides are quite well separated so I can cover the elements individually.

Als erstes kommt die Sitzfläche an die Reihe.

Ich messe also einmal der Länge nach von vorne über die Sitzfläche und Lehne und auch hinten wieder runter.

I’m starting with the sitting/sleeping area.

So I’m measuring the length from front sitting over backrest and then down the backside of the sofa.

Jetzt hat mein Sofa aber ein paar „Falten“ im Bezug, weil der ja die „Faltung“ mitmachen muß.

Also wird das Sofa aufgeklappt und sicherheitshalber auch noch mal ausgeklappt gemessen. Die Breite kann man so sowieso einfacher messen. Aufgeklappt ist es tatsächlich 3cm länger.

Und die Seitenteile messe ich auch gleich mit, einmal runherum in beide Richtungen.

Now my cover has some folds so it can stretch when unfold.

So I unfold the sofa to check the lengthwise measure. And taking the crosswise measure is easier that way anyhow. And, indeed, it’s about 3cm longer that way.

And as everything is unfold now I’m measuring the sides also. Circumference in both directions.

Mit den Zahlen in der Tasche mußten mein Herzblatt und ich uns dann nur noch auf einen Stoff einigen. Nachdem es diesmal eh keine Lösung für die Ewigkeit sein soll (eine Stimme sagt mir, daß ich das in zehn Jahren immer noch habe… *g*) konnten wir uns tatsächlich bei Toto in Paris relativ schnell einigen.

After I had determined the amount of fabric we need DH and I just had to agree over one fabric. Since we had decided this to be just an interim solution (which means we will still be having it in ten years… *g*) we found something at Toto in Paris rather quickly.

Dann geht es an den Zuschnitt. Zu den gemessenen Maßen gebe ich an allen Seiten je 10cm zu, damit die Kanten des Bezugs auch schön unter dem Sofa verschwinden.

Dazu kommt eine Schicht Wattierung, die wird aber nur genauso groß zugeschnitten wie die Sitzfläche selber.

Next step is cutting big pieces. I’m adding 10cm to my measurements on all sides.

Plus one layer of batting which is cut exactly to the size of the lay down area.

Nachdem ich durch Möbelverschieben genug Platz gefunden habe, den Stoff auszulegen, darf mir mein Schatz helfen, die Wattierung mit Sprühzeitkleber aufzukleben. Anschließend wird der Länge nach durchgenäht, eine Naht mit langen Stichen alle 15cm. (Mein Patchworklineal ist nämlich 15cm breit, also ist das leicht zu markieren.) Markiert habe ich mit Aqua Trickmarker auf der rechten Seite und zwar bevor ich die Wattierung aufgeklebt habe.

Erwähnte ich schon, daß es natürlich heiß war, an dem Tag an dem ich die Wattierung aufgequiltet habe?

I had to push some furniture to create enough space to lay the fabric somewhere. After that DH was allowed to help me to glue the batting to the fabric with temporary spray adhesive. After that I’m quilting batting and fabric, just straight stitch with long stitches 15cm distance between the stitching lines. (My quilting ruler is 15cm large, so that decided about the distance.) I had marked my stitchlines mit Trickmarker Aqua before I adhered the batting.

Did I mention that the day when I did the quilting was very hot?

Was ich nähen möchte ist im Prinzip ein Spannbettlaken. Also muß ich Ecken abnähen.

Da ich zu faul zum Messen bin, lege ich meinen gequilteten Stoff mit der rechten Seite nach unten auf das Sofa.

What I’m intending to sew is a fittet sheet. So I need to sew down the corners.

I am to lazy to determine the placement by measuring so I am putting my quilted top right side down on the sofa.

Jetzt kann ich direkt am Objeckt die Ecken passend abstecken.

Anschließend werden sei von Hand noch etwas begradigt und genäht.

Now I can pin down the placement of the corners.

After that I’m adjusting my markings and sew it.

Jetzt braucht mein Bezug noch einen Gummi.

Den nähe ich einfach auf die Kante mit einem breiten nicht zu engen Zickzackstich. Dabei einfach kräftig dehnen.

Da man den Gummi nicht sieht, benutze ich hier rücksichtslos alle meine Reststücke, egal wie breit oder schmal sie sind. Nur sollten sie eher einen kräftigen Zug haben, also nicht unbedingt Dessousgummi oder Babylitze.

Now my cover needs elastic around the edges.

I’m sewing it around all cut edges with a large and not to tight zigzag stitch. Stretching the elastic while I’m sewing.

As no one will ever see the elastic again after the cover is on the sofa I’m using all kind of pieces I still have laying around. (And which are to short to make something useful of it. Width is not an issue, but the elastic should be more on the strong side, fine lingerie elastic or soft elastic for baby clothes it not the best choice.

Jetzt noch drüber ziehen und ein bißchen zurecht zupfen… sieht doch besser aus?

Für die Seiten habe ich einfach Hüllen genäht, die unten offen sind und sie stramm drübergezogen.

Auf dem Bild fehlen noch ein paar Kleinigkeiten: Die Armkissen (sind inzwischen bezogen) und die Armlehnen sind noch unten offen. Da ist noch ein Gestänge im Weg und damit ich die unten schließen kann muß mein Herzallerliebster das Sofa irgendwie kippen und gekippt halten…

Aber sieht doch viel besser aus, oder?

Just putting the cover over the seating area, some twitches here and there…looks better, no?

For the sides I made straight covers that are left open on one side. They sit quite closely so it was a bit difficult to pull them over.

On the pics some things are still missing: the covers for the arm cushions (those are done now) and the covers of the sides are still open at the lower end. Here I’ll need the help of DH because someone will have to tilt the sofa and hold it that way so I can handstitch the rest.

But it looks way better that was, doesn’t it?
