Fresh from the Needles – April 2016

Barbie Kleid als Bausatz
Nähtechnisch habe ich die Jacke endlich fertig (Photo kommt irgendwann noch) und gebe mich dem Kleinkramnähen hin. Also wenig spannend, ein zugeschnittenes Barbiekleid.

Sewingwise I finally finished my jacket (pics still to come) so I am doing some smaller projects now. So there is a cut dress for a Barbie doll, not very thrilling.

PerlenMein Lace-Schal ist gut vorangekommen. Die erste Hälfte ist fertig, die zweite habe ich angefangen… und wurde von einem Mangel an Rocailles ausgebremst. Seit Februar war ich nicht mehr in Paris, hoffe aber, daß ich bei meinem nächsten Besuch mehr Glück habe.

Nice progress for my Lace Shawl. First half finished, second one started… and now out of seed beads. Haven’t been to Paris since February. I hope to be more lucky in the shop on my next trip.

SockenMit den Socken ging es überraschend gut vorwärts, obwohl die auf meiner Prioritätenliste sehr weit unten stehen. Der Schaft ist deswegen so kurz, weil aus unerfindlichen Gründen das Garn nicht weiter reichte…

Socks made more progress than expected, since they are really on the bottom of my priority list. The leg part is shorter than I had wanted it to be, because the yarn won’t last for more…

TopflappenDa mein Lace-Projekt zwangsweise auf Eis liegt, mache ich mich dran, mein Baumwollgar aufzuarbeiten und häkle Topflappen. Das ist schon Nummer vier, der gerade in Arbeit ist…

Since I can’t continue my lace shawl I started to work on the cotton yarn. Aim is to use all I’ve purchased last year for potholders. That is number four I am working on right now.

BücherUnd weil ich diesen Monat gerade wieder dran denke: Die Lektüre vom Nachttisch. Normalerweise habe ich ja ein Sachbuch und einmal Belletristik. Diesmal ist das nicht so klar. Das alte Photobuch (mal wieder technische Grundlagen auffrischen, die in den alten Büchern noch erklärt werden, weil die Kameras noch nicht alles automatisch machten) ist stellenweise im Erzählton geschrieben. Und Swetlana Alexeijewitsch schreibt keine Fiktion, auch wenn sie den Nobelpreis für Literatur bekommen hat. Dennoch ein sehr spannendes Buch.

And since I remembered when taking the pics this month: The books from my night table. Normally I have one non fiction and one fiction. But this time it is not so clear which is which… the old book about photography (refreshing some very basic knowledge which is explained in the old books, because the cameras did not do everything by themselves) is partially written in a tone like fiction would be. And Swetlana Alexeijewitsch does not write fiction, even though she got the Nobel Price for literature. But an extremely interesting book.

400 Hexagons…
Häkeldecke… etwa 6 Kilometer Garn und etwa drei Jahre und neun Monate Häkeln hat es gedauert. Aber jetzt ist meine Häkeldecke fertig und ich liebe sie. Ein einmaliges Stück und es war die Mühe wert.

… about 6 kilometers of yarn and about three years and nine months of crocheting was what it took to create this blanket. But it’s finished now and I love it. Really a unique piece and worth doing it.

Zur Zusammenfassung: es waren zwei verschiedene Häkelmotive (Nummer 30 und Nummer 54) aus dem Buch Beyond the Square von Edie Eckman und die verwendeten Garne waren “Boulino”, “Mystik” und “Samoa” von GGH, “Linen” von Katia, “Basics Capello” von Lana Grossa, “Morena” (in zwei Farben) von Schachenmayr nomotta,”Melange” von Zarina sowie “Bea” von Zettl. 400 Hexagons ergeben eine Decke von etwa 150cm x 200cm und fürs Zusammenhäkeln habe ich ziemlich genau vier Knäuel gebraucht.

To sum it up: I were two different crochet motifs (30 and 54) from the book Beyond the Square by Edie Eckman. The yarns I used were Boulino”, “Mystik” and “Samoa” by GGH, “Linen” by Katia, “Basics Capello” by Lana Grossa, “Morena” (in two colors) by Schachenmayr nomotta,”Melange” by Zarina and “Bea” by Zettl. 400 Hexagons make a blanket in the size 150cm x 200cm. Crocheting all the hexagons together took four skeins of yarn.

Die Garne sind nicht ganz gleich dick und die beiden Motive haben nicht die gleiche Maschenzahl, aber durch die Verwendung unterschiedlich starker Häkelnadeln und durch etwas Recken und Bügeln vor dem Zusammenhäkeln gleicht sich das am Ende aus, die Decke liegt flach. 🙂

The yarns do not all have the same weight and the motifs I choose do not have the same number of stitches. But by using crochet hooks of different sizes and then stretching and pressing the patches before attaching them it all evened out in the end. The blanket lays flat. 🙂

übrige Häkelteile Jetzt sind noch 80 Hexagons und etwa 600g verschiedener Garne übrig. Mal sehen, ob ich das irgendwie los werde…. Denn nein, ich mag keine gehäktelten Sofakissen…

Now I have about 80 hexagons and nearly 600g of different yarns left. Let’s see how I can get rid of those… Because no, I do not want grannie cushions.

Door opener

Bei einer Bürotür mit Publikumsverkehr ist es praktisch, wenn diese nicht jedesmal über den Türdrücker geöffnet werden muß, sondern zu den Kundenzeiten auch offen ist. Leider hat besagte Tür dafür keine Einstellung, also muß eine andere Lösung her. Da gibt es so Schaumstoffdinger zum einklemmen, nur dummerweise ist die Tür auch schwer, daher sind die nach wenigen Wochen kaputt. Das muß doch nachhaltiger gehen…

If you have an office with a lot of clients coming and going then it is helpful, if you do not have to press the door opener button all day (because in the end that is all you are doing all day and the work is not done), so the door should not lock at those times. Well, this door does not have a setting that allows to “unlock” it, so another solution was needed. You can buy kind of foam thingies you stick to the door so it can’t close completely. Only the door is heavy, so they only last a few weeks. A more permanent solution was demanded…

Rolle zum Tür offen halten
Und ich hatte eine… (hier an einer normalen Tür bei mir Zuhause, es funktioniert aber auch an der schweren Bürotür.)

And I had one… (the picture was taken at a normal door at home, but it works on the heavy office door also.)

Türstopper aus StrickfilzIch hatte ja 2007 mal Naturwolle mit Ostereierfarbe gefärbt, dann verstrickt und in der Waschmaschine gefilzt. Seither lag dieses Stück bei mir in der Truhe und wartete auf eine weitere Verwendung.

It was 2007 when I dyed natuarl woll with dye for easter eggs, then knitted it and felted it in the washing machine. Since then it was sitting in my trunk, waiting for something to do with.

Nun ja, hat etwas gedauert, aber jetzt war der Moment gekommen. Das Filzstück habe ich erst mal der Länge nach gefaltet und an den Längskanten unsichbar zusammen genäht. Dann ein farblich passendes Stück Falzgummi zu einer Schlaufe genäht und an der Nahtstelle sowie genau gegenüber gefaltet und mit einigen Stichen fixiert. Danach fing ich an, den Filz aufzurollen. In die erste “Faltung” habe ich eine Seite meiner Schlinge eingelegt und die Faltung an der Stelle wieder von Hand fixiert. Dann die zweite Gummihälfte parallel dazu gelegt und angefangen, alles ganz fest aufzuwickeln.

Well, it took me a while, but the moment was now. First I’ve folded the piece of felt lengthwise and I’ve sewn the long sides invisibly together. Then I took a piece of fold over elastic, sewed the ends together and made some stitches at the overlapping place and exactly on the other half of the elastic to keep it in the folded position. Afterwards I started rolling my pied. I folded the first “fold” over one side of the elastic and closed it with some stitches. Then I put the other part of the sling parallel to it and started rolling it together very firmly.

gefilzte RolleDie Windungen habe ich mit Perlgarn in großen Stichen zusammen genäht. Am Schluß mit Schlingstich die Kante auf der Rolle festgenäht. Damit der Gummi doppelt liegt kamen noch einge Rocailles auf die gegenüberliegenden Enden der Schlaufe.

While I was rolling the fabric I used embroidery perle cotton and stabstiches to hold it together while I was rolling. And the blanket stitch to sew the side of the felt piece to the roll. To keep the fold over elastic in the “fold” position I used some rocailles on the “turning points” of the sling.

Alles von Hand übrigens… es funktioniert, man kann die Rolle auf der Schlaufe verschieben, um sie gut über den Türknauf ziehen zu können und die Schlaufe kann auch nicht durchrutschen. Funktionlität gegeben, mal sehen, wie lang es hält….

Everything done by hand… it words, the felt “sausage” can move on the elastic, so you can pull it easily over the door knob. On the other hand the sling can not be pulled completely out either. Functionality given, we’ll see how long it will last….

Fresh on the needles on February 2016

Jacke auf PuppeDas sieht vielleicht immer noch nicht so dramatisch aus, aber bei meiner Jacke hat sich viel getan. Das was da drauf steckt sind nämlich die Belege, an denen das Futter auch schon dran ist. (Bis auf das Ärmelfutter, das wird von Hand eingenäht.) Das heißt, eine Naht mit der Maschine und noch eine Menge Kleinkram von Hand, dann ist die Jacke fertig. Ich hoffe mal, vor Ostern noch.

It might not look like such a dramatic change, but what is pinned on the otherwise finished jacket are the facings with the lining attached (Except the sleeve lining that will be sewn in by hand.) That means there is one long seam by machine to do and then a lot of handstitching. Then the jacket will be ready. I hope before Easter.

roter Lace-SchalNach den vielen Socken konnte ich endlich mal wieder was komplizierteres anfangen… Die Anleitung ist Spring Flowers and Butterflies von Katherine Bryant und das Garn ist Merino 30/2 von Zürcher Stalder, das ich erst letztes Jahr auf der Creativa gekauft hatte. Die Roccailles sind aus Paris. Wann der fertig wird steht allerdings völlig in den Sternen. Denn die erste Bordüre hat mehr als die Hälfte der Roccailles verbraucht und die sind im Laden im Moment aus und sie wissen nicht, wann die wieder kommen. Und so oft komme ich ja auch nicht nach Paris, daß ich die jede Woche abpassen könnte.

After all those plain socks I could start something more complicated… the pattern is Spring Flowers and Butterflies by Katherine Bryant and the yarn is Merino 30/2 by Zürcher Stalder, which I had purchased last year on Creativa. Though I have no idea when I will finish it. The seed beads were purchased in Paris but the first half used up more than half of the beads. And now the shop is out of stock and they do not know when they will be replaced. And I am not so often in Paris that I could check back every week.

SockenspitzeGanz kann ich von den Socken aber doch nicht lassen. Das Tuch ist zwar kompakt genug, um bei längeren Bahnfahrten gut stricken zu können, für die kurzen Fahrten mit der Straßenbahn rentiert es sich aber nicht so recht. Außerdem kann ich auch für mich mal wieder Socken brauchen, da waren ja gar nicht so viele dabei. Das Garn ist ein namenloses Opal, das ich mal bei einem Tausch bekommen habe. Ob es nach der Spitze ein Muster gibt weiß ich noch nicht so genau, vielleicht was mit Zöpfen…

But I can’t be completely sockless on my needles… the shawl is compact enough to be a good knitting on trains, but not for the short trips on the strassenbahn. Plus I can do with some more socks for myself… there haven’t been so much for me over the last year. Yarn is something nameless by Opal which I got from a swatch. If there will be a pattern after the toe haven’t decided yet. Maybe something with cables…

Big Pot Holder

Ich besitze ja jede Menge Topflappen in allen möglichen Bauformen. Gekauft, liebevoll handgemacht,… über die Jahre hat sich aber herauskristallisiert, daß ich letztlich am liebsten die gehäkelten aus Baumwolle benutze. Sie sind hitzefester als alle (gekauften oder gemachten) genähten Modelle, man kann sie schnell falten und doppelt nehmen, sie sind problemlos waschbar und dienen im Notfall auch mal schnell als Topfuntersetzer.

tola1506I do own like a zillion pot holders of all kinds. Some store bought, some carefully crafted… but if I look at what I use most often, then its the good old crocheted cotton model. They offer a better heat protection than all sewn ones (no matter if handmade or from a shop), I can fold them over for double protection, easily washable in the machine and can double as table mat to protect surfaces against the heat of a pot.

Dummerweise sind meine Häkeltopflappen aber noch aus meiner Studentenzeit, aus irgendwelchen Resten gehäkelt (die farblich gar nicht in meine Küche passen) und im Laufe der vielen Jahre doch etwas… na sagen wir nicht schöner geworden.

Only problem is, that all my crocheted pot holders still date back to my university time. Made from whatever remnants were around (colors not fitting into my kitchen) and over those many years they are kind of… well they did not gain in beauty.

tola1505Also habe ich mir einen neuen gehäkelt. Das Garn ist “Camilla” von Woll Butt, das ich doppelt genommen habe. (Auswahlkriterium war die Farbe und daß ich eh bei Buttinette was bestellen mußte…) Karomuster sieht man, die Größe ist mit knapp 35cm Kantenlänge etwas arg groß, ich muß meine Haken dafür höher hängen, damit sie nicht auf den Herd hängen, aber sonst ist das so geworden, wie ich das haben will.

So I’ve made a new one. Yarn is “Camilla” by Woll Butt (main reason for the choice were the colors and that I did have to order something from Buttinette anyhow…) two strands held together, patter is visible and with 35cm it got a bit larger than intended. I will need to find another attachment over my oven. Otherwise it will in the pots. But in total it turned out the way I had wanted it.

Das wird auch nicht der letzte sein, ich habe noch mehr Garn..

And it won’t be the last one, I have more yarn…

(P.S.: Der aktuelle Überblick ist nicht vergesseh, der kommt nur nächste Woche, sonst wäre er nicht aktuell machbar.)

Xmas knitting….

Mütze… zum ersten und zum letzten.

… first and last.

Da mich ja seit Mitte November diese fiese Erkältung im Griff hatte, gab es dieses Jahr tatsächlich nur ein einziges selbergestricktes Weihnachtsgeschenk. Und das auch  nur, weil ich sie im Oktober schon gestrickt hatte und vor Weihnachten dann nur noch Fäden vernähen mußte. Genäht habe ich gar nichts, auch keine Geschenksäckchen.

Since I was fighting this persistent cold since mid November I made only one Christmas gift myself this year. And that’s this knitted hat. And that did happen only because I had knitted the hat already in October so there were only the thread ends to weave in December. No sewing at all, not even gift bags.

Das Muster habe ich von den Biohazard Socks übernommen, die mein Bruder 2013 zu Weihnachten bekommen hatte. Leider bekam ich das Neon-Garn nicht mehr, also wurde es “normales” Orange. Die Wolle ist “Sockenwolle 6fach” von Woll Butt, das war das leuchtendste was ich gefunden habe. Für die Mütze habe ich vier Rapporte des Musters verwendet. (Und es steht wieder auf dem Kopf, ich merk mir das doch nie…)

The pattern I picked from Biohazard Socks, which had been the Christmas present of 2013. I couldn’t get the neon yarn, so I took the brightest “normal” orange I could find. This was “Sockenwolle 6fach” by Woll Butt. I used four repeats of the pattern. (And it’s again upside down… I’ll never learn it…)

Mein Bruder trägt sie, hätte es aber gerne in leuchtendem Neon gehabt… 😉

My brother wears that hat, but had preferred to have it in bright neon orange… 😉

Socks for Homeless VI

geringelte RestesockeUnd das ist das letzte Paar von meinen Socken für die Weihnachtsaktion der Kölner Diakonie. Ich habe die gleiche Ringeltechnik verwendet wie bei Paar Nummer 5, habe aber diesmal viele kleine Reste verwendet und dadurch auch gut aufgebraucht. Allerdings habe ich zum Abwiegen der halben Knäuel diesmal die Küchenwaage statt der Briefwaage benutzt und die deutlichen Abweichungen bei den Streifen zeigen, daß die zwar grammgenau anzeigt, aber offensichtlich deutlich weniger genau wiegt. (Was mich allerdings nicht völlig überrascht…)

This is the last pair of socks I made for the Christmas Campaign of the Diakonie Cologne. I’ve used the same technique for fine stripes as in pair number 5, but this time I’ve used quite a lot of smaller amounts. (And could use up most of them.) But for distributing the yarn in equal amounts I’ve not used the letter scale, but the kitchen scale. And the visible differences tell me, that the kitchen scale may appear to be precise down to one gram but evidently isn’t. (Though I was not completely surprised…)

Needlestatistics 2015

Da ich seit November nichts mehr genäht habe (erst wegen der Sockenkisten und dann wegen des überaus nachhaltigen Erkältungsvirus den ich jetzt ungefähr seit Mitte November mit mir rumschleppe) und auch mein Kleiderschrank nicht gerade vor neuen Klamotten überbordet hatte ich gefühlt gar nichts genäht. Ganz so schlimm war es dann doch nicht, denn gerade in der ersten Jahreshälfte hatte es einiges an Kleinkram gegeben.

My sewing machine is off since November, first because I had all those socks for the homeless in front of my machine and then because I am dealing since mid of November with a not dangerous, but evidently very resistant ordinary cold virus that eats most of my energy. Also my wardrobe is not running over with new clothes, so my guess was, I had not sewn anything this year. After checking my blog I found out it was not that bad, because I had made some smaller stuff in the first half of the year.

Wie immer zählt für die Statistik das, was ich 2016 im Blog vorgestellt hatte und mich interessiert, wo meine Anleitungen hergekommen sind.

Like always it only “counts” what I had blogged about in 2016 and what interests me most is where my patterns come from.

Dank der Sockenaktion liegen die Strick- und Häkelwerke mit 18 dieses Jahr vorne.

Thanks to the sock campaign the knitted and crocheted item were more than sewn ones this year, 18 it were.

Und je eines nach Threads, von Butterick, Elan und aus einem Buch. And then one each using Threads instructions, a Butterick and an Elan pattern and from a book.

Das letzte genähte Teil das fertig wurde müßte das Nachthemd sein. Gepostet habe ich es im November, vermutlich war es im Oktober fertig. Das letzte Strickwerk war ein Weihnachtsgeschenk (noch nicht gezeigt), bei dem ich am 16.12.2015 die Fäden vernäht habe.

The last sewn item I finished last year should have been this nightshirt. I’ve blogged about it in November and I think it was finished in October. The last knitting item was a hat as a Christmas gift (not shown here yet), where I’ve woven the threads on 12/16/2015.

Unverändert die Reihenfolge meiner eigenen Anleitungen bei Ravelry, die Hackensocke hat mit 1175 die meisten Herzchen, der 1-2-3-5-Beanie mit 45 die meisten Projekte. Neue Anleitungen habe ich dieses Jahr keine erstellt.

No changes as far as my own patterns on ravelry are concerend, Heels for Flats are the most favorited one with 1175 favorites, 1-2-3-5-Beanie is the most knitted one with 45 projects. I did not make any new patterns this year.

Auf hobbyschneidern24 habe ich auch nichts neues hochgeladen, hier ist Schickzick immer noch die beliebteste Nähanleitung (1451 Hits), bei den Strickanleitungen liegt jetzt auch der 1-2-3-5-Beanie vorne mit 875 Hits.

No new uploads on hobbyschneiderin24 also. Still the little bag Schickzick is the most preferred of my sewing patterns (1451 hits), for the knitting patters its now also 1-2-3-5-Beanie that is on top (875 hits.)

Meine Häkeldecke ist endlich fertig, ich muß sie nur mal photographieren… im Moment stricke ich wieder an einem Lace-Schal, was nach den ganzen langweiligen Socken wirklich ein Vergnügen ist. Was das nähen betrifft, hoffe ich, daß ich endlich mit meiner Jacke weiter komme.

My eternal Granny Hexagons Plaid is finally finished, I just haven’t photographed it yet… I’ve started a new lace project which is a nice change after all those boring simple socks. And for sewing I hope I finally get around working on my jacket and maybe even finishing it.

Fresh on the needles

JackeGenäht habe ich schon seit etwa einem Monat nicht mehr. Leider sind die Jackenteile auch nicht schon zusammengenäht, sondern nur auf die Puppe gesteckt. Was immerhin in so weit hilfreich ist, daß ich mich entschlossen habe, noch eine kleine Schulterstütze aus Seidenorganza einzuarbeiten. Auch die Taschenbeutel fehlen noch, dann kann ich die Teile endlich zusammen nähen.

It is about one month that I didn’t sew anything. The parts of my jacket have not been sewn together, I just pinned them to my dress form. Which was kind of helpful, because it helped me to decide that I want a bit of a shoulder interfacing from silk organza in the fronts. Then also the pockets are missing, then I can finally assemble the parts.

MützeDa Weihnachten naht, sind auch einge Geschenke fällig. Da mein Bruder unvorsichtigerweise gemeint hatte, das Muster der Socken von vor zwei Jahren sei doch als Mütze viel besser… na dem kann geholfen werden. 😀

Christmas is approaching, so some gifts need also to be made. My brother had teased me, the pattern of the socks he got two years ago would even be better as a hat… well, he’ll get a hat. 😀

Socken in rotAbgabetermin für meine Obdachlosensocken ist am Montag. Dummerweise habe ich noch zwei Paare auf der Nadel. Diese hier aus Crelando “Anika” “musste” ich anfangen, weil ich das andere angefangene Paar bei meinem Bruder vergessen hatte. Hier fehlt noch ein wenig Schaft und der Bund, das sollte bis Montag auf alle Fälle klappen.

Moday will be the day when our socks for the homeless will be delivered. Problem is, that I still have two unfinished pairs. Those from “Anika” by Crelando I “had” to start because I had forgotten another unfinished pair at my brothers place. Here I only need to be a bit of the leg and the cuff. That should be done by Monday.

RestesockenDie Restesocken hat mir mein Bruder inzwischen geschickt, aber hier fehlt noch ein wenig Fuß und der ganze Rest. Mir fällt auf, daß das Abwiegen mit der Küchenwaage doch deutlich ungenauer ist als mit der Briefwaage beim ersten Mal.

The other socks, where I am using yarn leftovers, my brother has sent to me meanwhile. But here the second sock is not even half knitted. I am still before the heel. What I can see from the differences in the colors is, that using the kitchen scale was less precise than the letter scale I had used for my first attempt in that style.

Wenn ich die auch noch schaffen will bis Montag, sollte das Wochenende viel Regen bringen… :o)

If I want to finish those also until Monday there should be a lot of rain… :o)

TopflappenUnd weil mir gerade völlig langweilig war, mußte ich noch “mal eben schnell” einen riesigen und komplzierten Topflappen anfangen… Garn ist hier “Camilla” von Woll Butt. Und wenn man ständig ganz viele Knäuel dran hängen hat, dann ist das auch recht umständlich. Der ist aber auch fast fertig.

And since all that was not enough and I felt bored I had to start a “quick” huge potholder in crochet. Yarn is “Camilla” by Woll Butt. And if you have a lot of skeins attached to your crochet project all the time it is a bit messy… but now it is nearly finished.
