The Mysterium of the Machine Seam

Wenn es kniffelig wird, schlage ich gerne mal einige Handstiche vor. Und oft ernte ich einen entsetzten Blick und höre “Aber das hält doch gar nicht!”. Ich habe bis heute nicht verstanden, warum das so sein soll, wo doch Generationen von Menschen Kleidung von Hand genäht haben. Und manches davon sogar so haltbar war, daß wir es heute in Museen bestaunen können.

When it gets complicated in sewing (especially that kind of small scale complicated, when you have the problem to fit that part of the fabric under the machine where you need the stitches to be) I often recommend some hand stitches. And often I get a horrified look and hear “But that will fall apart!”. I never understood why that should be so since generations of humans had hand sewn clothes. And them of those were even so durable that we can admire tham in museums today.

Aufgetrennte NahtDeswegen hier mal ein kleines Beispiel: Der kleine Riegel, der die Naht noch rettet ist von Hand genäht. Das was sich aufgetrennt hat ist die Steppnaht der Maschine.

So a little example: The tiny tab that keeps the fabrics together was hand sewn. While that what did not hold was the machine seam.

Und jetzt schließe ich die Naht wieder. Mit einigen Handstichen. 🙂

And now I’m going to resew the seam. With some hand stitches. 🙂

Yet another clutch

Rosen ClutchMit etwas Vlieseline H250 kann man auch den dünnen Rosenstoff in eine Clutch verwandeln. (Den groben Reißverschluß hat netterweise Frau mhs beigesteuert.) Und da sich die “High Octane Clutch” nach der Threads-Anleitung aufgrund des Handgelenkriemens als ausgesprochen praktisch erwiesen hat, wird diese hier sicher auch noch Einsatzmöglichkeiten finden. (Nicht zum Kleid, das wäre etwas viel Rosen…)

With the help of Vliseline H250 interfacing even the fine rose fabric can be turned into a clutch. (The strong zipper was from the stash of Frau mhs, thanks for that!). And since the “High Octane Clutch” made after the instructions from Threads has proven extremely useful thanks to the wrist strap I will find possibilities to use this one also. (Not with the dress. I think that would be a bit to “rosy”…)

StofftierAuch einige Reste von meinem Kleid habe ich für einen kleines Kaninchen aus dem Aranzi Aronzo Buch genutzt. Da der Rosenstoff sehr dünn ist, habe ich ihn doppellagig mit meinem Unterlegstoff verarbeitet.

A part of the remnants of my dress were made into a little rabbit after my Aranzi Aronzo book. Since the rose fabric is really very thin and see through I underlined it with the same fabric as the dress.

Für Augen, Mund und Ohren habe ich Fleece verwendet und alles vor dem Zusammennähen aufgenäht. So geht es deutlich schneller als von Hand. Der großgemusterte Stoff gibt Rosie noch mehr Individualität. Finde ich.

I used fleece fabric for eyes, mouth and ears and I’ve sewn it on by machine before assembling the pieces. That is way faster than hand sewing. The fabric with the big print gives Rosie even more personality. I think.

Test with Roses

Für den Geburstag meiner Mutter habe ich mir ein neues Kleid vorgenommen, da ich eine auffällige Seide habe, soll es Vogue V8846 werden.

For my mothers birthday I intend to wear a new dress. I have a silk with a strong print, so I’ve choosen Vogue V8846.

Kleid VogueBevor ich aber die Seide anschnipple, gab es erst mal ein Probekleid. Da ich aber davon ausging, daß es tragbar sein würde (und eh noch ein Sommerkleid brauchen kann) habe ich mir einen dünnen Baumwollstoff mit Rosenmuster aus meiner Kiste geholt. Da es um einen Test der Passform ging, habe ich den Überwurf am Rücken weggelassen. Anders hätte der Stoff auch nicht gereicht…

Before cutting into my beautiful silk I decided to make a test dress. I was quite sure it would be wearable, so I used a cute cotton print with roses from my stash. It was a test for the fit, so I did not make the double back. Otherwise the fabric would not have been enough anyhow.

hintere MittelnahtDa mein Stoff zu dünn für ein Kleid war, habe ich ihn mit einem off-white Poly-Baumwoll-Gemisch unterlegt. (Das war der Stoff, der auf die Schnelle zu haben war.) Die rückwärtige Mittelnaht habe ich eingefasst, der Reißverschluss ist so auch gleich sauber mit versorgt. (Gefüttert habe ich nicht, ich trage ohnehin ein Unterkleid drunter.)

My fabric was to thin for a dress, so I underlined it with a off white poly-cotton fabric. (Not the ideal fabric, but that was the one that was to have quickly.) The middle back seam has bound seam allowances. (I did not line it, I’m wearing it with a slip anyhow.)

rückwärtige NahtIch habe mir übrigens den Luxus gegönnt, das Stoffmuster an der rückwärtigen Mittelnaht passend zu legen. (Im unteren Teil, oben ist die Naht gebogen, da geht das natürlich nicht.) Für mehr “Passung” hätte der Stoff ohnehin nicht gereicht.

I decided for the luxury to match the pattern on the middle back seam (At the lower part, above the seam is curved, so it isn’t possible.) For more “pattern fitting” my fabric hadn’t been enough anyhow.

InnenverarbeitungIch wollte eine saubere und trotzdem schnelle Verarbeitung. An den Schulternähten habe ich eine Kappnaht nach innen gemacht, den Kragen von rechts in der Nahtrille abgesteppt, um den Kragenbeleg  mit zu befestigen. Die Armausschnitte sind mit breiten Schrägstreifen einbesetzt.

I wanted a clean but still quickly done inside. So I made a felled seam on the inside for the shoulders, then I topstitched the collar in the seam to attach the collar facing and I used wide bias to make a facing on the arm holes.

SeitennahtDanach habe ich die Seitennaht geschlossen und der Plan war, ebenfalls eine Kappnaht zu machen. Dummerweise war das Kleid dann aber an Taille und Hüfte dich etwas eng, also mußte ich die Nahtzugabe noch etwas rauslassen. Für eine Kappnaht reichte es nicht mehr. Also habe ich die Nahtzugaben zusammen eingefasst und dann festgesteppt.

Afterwards I closed the side seams and the idea was to make a flat felled seam again. Problem was, the dress was kind of tight at waist and hips, so I had to let out the side seams and afterwards there was not enough seam allowance left for a felled seam. So I bound the seam allowances together and stitched it down.

Kleid StylingDa im Moment ja Stlye Blogs in sind, gibt es auch eine Outfit-Möglichkeit: Mit T-Strap Pumps, einer kleinen Handtasche und meinem hellen indischen Schal. (Interessiert das eigentlich wirklich jemanden?)

Since “style blogging” is a kind of necessity nowadays I’ll show a style option. With t-straps, a small handbag and my off white Indian shawl. (Does that really interest somebody?)

Kleid, sportliches StylingDa ich allerdings nach den Bildern (Stativ und Zeitauslöser) zu einer mehrstündigen Stadtführung aufgebrochen bin, habe ich mich für eine bequemere Variante entschieden: flache Treter und eine Jeans Clutch. Sieht eigentlich auch nicht schlecht aus…

Since I was on my way to a city tour (after taking the pics with the timer) I decided for a mor comfortable version: flats and a jeans clutch. Doesn’t look that bad either…

Der Test war somit fast erfolgreich, ich werde aus dem Schnitt an der Taille noch einen Zentimeter Länge rausnehen und am Vorderteil an den Seitennähten 2cm zugeben. (Da die Seitennaht tendentiell nach vorne zieht, scheint mir das besser als je 1cm vorne und hinten.) Und dann geht es der Seide an den Kragen…

So the test was quite successful. I’ll shorten the dress by another centimeter at waist level and I’ll add 2cm at the side seam of the front. (The side seams are pulling a bit forward, so that seems better than adding 1cm at front and back.) And then it’s time for the silk…

Stitch Meditation…

… klingt besser als Stopfen.

… sounds better than darning.

StopfsticheMein Bruder hat mal wieder Socken mit Löchern abgeliefert. Und da es deutlich einfacher ist, die “fast Löcher” zu verstärken als richtige Löcher zu stopfen habe ich auch alle dünnen Stellen verstärkt.

My brother gave me some socks for darning. And since it is much easier to strengthen “nearly holes” than darning real holes, I took my chance to strengthen all thin patches.

Die Socken im Bild hat er schon 2007 bekommen. Allerdings stopfe ich die auch schon zum zweiten mal, das erste Mal kam schnell, aber die damals verstärkten Stellen halten noch. Die Edelweiß-Socken haben hingegen gut zwei Jahre gehalten. Nicht gerade die tollste Haltberkeit für Sockengarn. Aber ich habe jetzt eine gute Vorstellung davon, wo mein Bruder Socken typischerweise durch läuft und werde mal sehen, ob mir da für die Zukunft eine sinnvolle Verstärkung einfällt.

The socks in the pic were from 2007. But those I had already repeared shortly afterwards giving them to him. Though the patches I had strengthened then last well. The Edelweiss socks kept a bit more than two years. Not to great performance for sock yarn. But with all that long time repairwork I got a good idea where my brother stresses his socks most. My next challenge will be to find a good way to make exactely those parts stronger while knitting.

Positively surprised

Vor einigen Jahren habe ich mir ja mal ein Kleid aus einer Knip als Nachthemd genäht. Das Ergebnis war “bettauglich” aber mehr auch nicht.

Some years ago I’d used a pattern from Knip to make a night shirt. The result was good to wear in bed, but nothing more.

Jetzt war aber dringend ein neues Nachthemd nötig, also holte ich den Schnitt noch mal raus, denn er war immerhin schnell gegangen…

Now I quite urgently needed new nightwear, so I picked the old pattern again since it was something to make fast…

NachthemdDiesmal hat es sogar Ähnlichkeit mit einem Kleid! (Deswegen habe ich für das Photo dann auch richtige Schuhe angezogen. Den doofen Blick bitte ich zu entschuldigen….)

This time it even comes close to a dress! (So I wore shoes for the photo. Please excuse the extremely stupid look…)

Mein Stoff hat diesmal etwas mehr Stand, es ist ein Rippenstrick aus Baumwolle, eher schon feiner Strick als noch Jersey. (Auch so eine Internettausch… entweder sah das Muster auf dem Bild völlig anders aus oder er stammt noch aus einer Zeit, als man sich oft auf Beschreibungen verlassen mußte, weil noch nicht jeder eine Digicam hatte.) Da das Material absolut nicht reichte, half Frau mhs mit einer farblich hervorragend passenden Schlauchware aus ihren Vorräten aus. Die Saumblende ist gut doppelt so breit wie die Anleitung vorgibt, die Ärmel sind etwa 5cm kürzer. Halb versehentlich, weil ich dachte, die Linie auf dem Schnitt wäre die Stelle, wo dann die Manschetten noch mal extra abgepaust werden mußten. Als ich die Manschetten dann annähen wollte, stellte ich fest, daß der Ärmel an der Stelle deutlich breiter ist, als er sollte. Was zu dem Schluß führte, daß die Linie nur vom Anstückeln auf dem Schnittbogen kam. Andererseits hätte der helle Stoff höchstens noch zwei Zentimeter mehr hergegeben….

This time my fabric is a cotton rib knit that is a bit firmer than the last fabric I had. (Another internet swap which was not as expected. Either it looked very differently from the pic or it was so long aog, that you had to rely on descriptions, because many people did not have a digital camera.) The fabric was not enough, but Frau mhs had the perfect green cotton jersey in her collection. I made the green part at the skirt about twice as larger as the pattern indicates it. The sleenes were shortened by 5 cm. Halfway accidentially. There was a line on the sleeve pattern and I thought that had been the line up to which the extra cuff part was supposed to be cut off. But when I tried to sew the cuff to the sleeve it turned out the sleeve was wider than expected. So the line on the pattern was from the piecing on the original pattern sheet. But anyhow, I could have maybe added 2cm more, but the fabric was definitely not enough for the original length.

Ich habe die Verarbeitung noch ein wenig schneller gestaltet: Statt für de Raffung einen Tunnel aufzunähen und ein Zugband einzuziehen, habe ich den Stoff gleich gerafft und mit einem Band drauf so fixiert. Das Ausmaß der Raffung habe ich beim Tragen an Version 1 abgemessen. (Zuerst wollte ich es auf einen Gummi nähen und dadurch raffen, aber sogar Unterbrustband vom BH nähen war nicht stark genug, für eine so starke Raffung.) Und die obere Kante habe ich mit Falzgummi eingefasst, dabei den Gummi 10 Prozent kürzer zugeschnitten als die Länge des Ausschnitts, hinten am Ausschnitt nur minimal gedehnt aufgenäht und den Rest der Dehnung dann seitlich und vorne verteilt. Dadurch sitzt der Ausschnitt viel besser.

I streamlined the sewing process a bit. Instead of sewing a fabric tunnel and making drawstrings into it I gathered the fabric at the front and sewed a ribbon over it to make the gathering stay. How much I wanted the gathers I could take from the first version. (First I had intended to sew it on a stretched piece of elastic to get the gathering, but not even the under bust elasting from bra sewing was strong enough for so much gathering.) For the neckline I used fold over elastic. I cut it 10 percent smaller than the neckline circumference, stretched it minamally while sewing it to the back neckline and distributed the rest evenly over sides and front. Now the neckline sits nicely.

rennendDas einzige was mich jetzt noch wirklich stört, ist daß die vordere Mitte am Ausschnitt nicht schön ist. Das ist ja ein gerades Stück Stoff, was sich dann in einen V-Ausschnitt legen soll. Das tut es natürlich nicht. Aber wenn man da ein kleines Eck abnäht…. könnte aus dem passenden Stoff vielleicht doch mal noch ein Kleid draus werden? Oder wenigstens ein nettes Shirt… (Das letzte, dynamische, Bild zeigt, was passiert, wenn ich merke, daß die Kamera nicht ein Bild mit Selbstaulöser macht, sondern eine ganze Serie schießt… :-P)

(The last picture shows me running towards the camera when I recognized it was not taking one picture as intended, but a whole series… ) The only thing I still do not like on the pattern is, how the front neckline lays. It is a straight piece of fabric, gathered into a V-shape, so it does fold out. But maybe one could sew a tiny “V” into the foldover elastic… so with the right fabric this might make a dress one day. Or at least a nice pattern for a top…

(Pre)Summer Project Overview: June 2014

Wickelbluse Gewisse Bilder werden wohl allmählich Tradition. Die Wickelbluse hängt unverändert da, wo sie nicht stört und ich habe auch nicht wunderbarerweise 10 kg abgenommen. Da jetzt aber erst mal Sommer und ein Projekt mit “Ablaufdatum” angesagt ist, wird sich da vor September oder Oktober sicher nichts dran ändern.

Some pictures become a tradition. The wrap blouse is unchanged at the place where it doesn’t disturb anyone and I have not lost miraculously 10kg,. But now it’s summer and I have a project that has a dead line, so nothing will change here until September or October.

BH Ähnliches gilt für den BH. Hier sind die Bügel inzwischen gekürzt, aber noch nicht rund geschliffen und erst recht nicht versiegelt. Das könnte ich aber mal zwischendrin angehen.

Similar for the bra. There is some micro-progress: the wires have been cut, but they need “roundening” and a sealing. But I might go on with that before autumn.

Rock zugeschnittenVon meinem Frühlingsprojekt gibt es immerhin Anfänge eines Rockes. Schnitt gebastelt, Abnäher genäht, Reißverschluss eingesetzt und die Belege der Schlitzkante angenäht. Doch auch das ruht vermutlich bis Herbst.

My springproject has a started skirt. I altered the pattern to match the style, darts closed, zipper sewn and facings of the front opening added. But that will probably stay as it is until autumn.

Schnitt auf Folie Mein zeitkritisches Projekt ist noch wenige spetakulär, aber wichtige Schritte getan: Den Schnitt (Vogue 8846) auf Folie kopiert und meine üblichen Änderungen vorgenommen. Als nächstes werde ich aus den “Basisteilen” ein Probekleid nähen, das dann ein normales Sommerkleid werden soll. Ich habe schon ein paar Stoffe dafür aus meiner Kiste gekramt und muß mich nun festlegen, welcher es werden soll.

My “deadline” project isn’t spectacular yet, but important steps are done: I copied the pattern (Vogue 8846) on plastic sheet and made my usual alterations. Now I’ll sew a test dress (using only the “basic” pattern pieces) which I hope to become a normal summer dress. I picked some cotton fabrics from my stash and will have to decide, which one I’m going to take.

MützeStricktechnisch liegt natürlich auch einiges herum. Ein Button Up Hat der seit einigen Wochen fertig gestrickt ist, dem aber die namensgebenden Knöpfe noch fehlen.

Of course there is also some knitting going on. Here a Button Up Hat which I’ve finished knitting some weeks ago, only missing the buttons. 

SockeUnd natürlich nicht ganz überraschend auch Socken. Die dann meine “rosa Socken” Phase hoffentlich beenden. Weil dann das Garn weitgehend aufgebraucht sein wird. (Das ist die erste Socke und das Muster ist so geplant, daß das Garn hoffentlich auch zwei Socken ergibt.)

Probably no surprise there are also some socks on my needles. I hope they will end my “pale pink socks” period. Because the yarn will be mostly finished then. (That’s the first sock and the pattern is planned in a way it will hopefully make two socks.)

HäkelgranniesUnd zum Abschluss noch ein Blick auf meine Hexagons, die auf 373 angewachsen sind.

And I am finishing with a view on my Granny Hexagons which are 373 meanwhile.

Neben dem Stricken, was ja vor allem nebenbei läuft wird also in nächster Zeit vor allem das Vogue Kleid im Vordergrund stehen.

Besides knitting, which is always a kind of crafty “side dish” for me the Vogue dress will be the most important one for the next two months.

Precision Job

Exakter ZuschnittManchmal ist exaktes Arbeiten auch bei “niederen” Werken wie einem Nachthemd gefragt.

Sometimes precicion jobs are needed even for pathetic garments like sleep wear.

Wenn man nämlich einen Stoff verweden will, der eigentlich zu wenig ist….

Because if you absolutely want to use a fabric that is not enough. Basically…

Original and Fake

Alte Nähmaschinen zum Rumstehen und Einstauben sind ja nicht so mein Fall, “Klassiker” die noch laufen hingegen schon. Und so angelte ich mir vor etlichen Jahren eine Elna 1 in einem nicht sehr guten Zustand und ohne Kabel auf einem Pariser Flohmarkt. Dafür für wenig Geld.

Antique sewing machines standing around as decoration and to collect dust are not what I like. “Classique” models that still work much more. So several years ago I’ve found an Elna 1 in a not very good state and without cable on a Paris flea market. Very cheap.

Und tatsächlich bekam sie mein Stamm-Mechanikus mit etwas Experimentierfreude wieder zum Laufen. Schöner wird sie davon nicht, aber sie funktioniert. Nur der Garnrollenhalter war gebrochen.

And indeed, my trusted mechanikus tried some things and made it working again. She will never be a beauty, but she’s working. Only the thread spool holder was broken.

Garnrollenhalter ElnaHier jemanden zu finden, der einen neuen gießen kann war relativ einfach. Da kenne ich nämlich jemanden… hat zwar nach wie vor keine Webseite, aber falls jemand auch dieses Teil braucht, gebe ich die Kontaktdaten gerne weiter.

Finding somebody who could make a new one was not the hardest part. I know somebody who can…. he does not have a website, but if someone needs that part also I can pass on the contact data.

Nein, der wirklich schwierige Teil war, jemanden zu finden, der eine alte Elna 1 hat, an der genau dieses Teil noch intakt ist. Und der willens ist, das mal auszuleihen. Das hat einige Jahre gedauert.

Garnrollenhalter Elna 1No, the really difficult part was, to find somebody who owns and old Elna 1 where this part is not broken yet. And who is willing to part with this piece for some days. That took several years.

Aber jetzt habe ich mein Ersatzteil und das grüne Original kann zurück. Und für alle, die das Ersatzteil auch brauchen… es gibt jetzt eine Form dafür. 🙂

But know I have my shiny “fake” part and the green original can go back. And for others who might need that spare part also… there exists a mould now for more. 🙂

Coffee Bag

KaffeesackNoch so ein schnelles, kleines Projekt…

Another of those quick and small projects…

Mit dem “Direkt-Freunde-Express” bekam ich mal wieder sehr leckere Kaffee Bohnen aus Indien. Sorte “Mysore Nuggets”. Einen Teil davon habe ich weiterverschenkt und dazu gab es ein schmuckes Säckchen aus Stoffresten. (Schrift frei gestickt mit Valdani Verlaufsgarn.)

Our “comes-by-friends-express” delivered some very tasty coffee beans from India. Typ “Mysore Nuggets”. A part of them was turned into a gift and I could use up some remnants by making this little coffee (gift) bag. (The writing was done with free machine embroidery and I used variegated thread from Valdani.)
