Christmas Preparations in Paris

Weihnachtsbaum Galeries LafayetteDieses Jahr bekomme ich den Pariser Weihnachtsschmuck ja leider nicht mit, weil mein letzter Besuch für dieses Jahr schon im Oktober war. Aber eine kleine Vorschau gibt es doch, in den Galeries Lafayette war man nämlich schon dabei, den Weihnachtsbaum aufzubauen… 😀

This year I won’t see the Christmas decoration in Paris because my last visit for this year was in october. But I got a little preview, the Galeries Lafayette were already installing the christmas tree… 😀

Ja, es ist schon so weit. Mit meinem Weihnachtsstricken bin ich fertig. 🙂 (Okay, das liegt an der geringen Anzahl der gestrickten Geschenke…)

Yes, it’s about time. I’ve finished my christmas knitting. 🙂 (Okay, two items… not really great achievement…)

MützeDa mein Bruder seine letzte Mütze ja den Motten geopfert hat (bzw die Hälfte davon, die Biester haben nur das teurere und weichere Garn rausgefressen) gibt es dieses Jahr eine neue.

Since my brother had his last hat eaten by moths he’ll get a new one this year. (Btw the moths ate only the softer and more expensive yarn out of the striped hat…)

Ich suchte was mit etwas Struktur, aber nicht so viel Schnickschnack und da gefiel mir „Strib Hat“ von Kelly Williams ins Auge. Nur habe ich die Streifen an mein Garn angepaßt. Und habe gemäß meinen eigenen Mützenerfahrungen 112 Maschen angeschlagen.

I had been looking for a pattern with some texture, but no „chichi“ and the „Strib Hat“ by Kelly Williams was perfect for me. Only changes I made was casting on more stitches (112) according to my own experience with hats and my gauge and I also changed the stripes according to my yarn.

Als Garn habe ich „Zenith“ von di.Vé aus einer Grab Bag von WEBS genommen und in der Maschenkunst noch ein Knäuel „Sportwool“ von Filatura die Crosa in Grün dazu gekauft. Ergebnis gefällt mir schon mal und hat außerdem Garn von meinem Vorrat verbraucht. Dann hoffe ich mal, daß es dem Beschenkten auch gefallen wird. Und die Motten nicht so schnell wieder drüber herfallen…

Yarn I used was „Zenith“ by di.Vé from my WEBS grab bag and added green „Sportwool“ by Filatura di Crosa. I like the result and I could use from my stash. So I hope the receiver will like the hat also. And I hope the moths will not eat it up so quickly…

Christmas is around the corner…

HandwärmerIch habe nämlich mein erstes Weihnachtsgeschenk schon fertig. 🙂

I’ve finished my first christmas gift. 🙂

Das Strickmuster sind die bewährten Spatterdash Wristwarmer aus einer knitty vom letzten Jahr, gestrickt wieder mit Noro Kureyon Sock, dem Rest von meinen, um genau zu sein.

The pattern is Spatterdash Wristwarmer from knitty, as yarn I was using the rest of the Noro Kureyon Sock that I had used for mine.

Diesmal mit einem etwas andere Touch, durch die orangenen Knöpfe von Entrée des Fournisseurs in Paris.

This time I used orange buttons from Entrée des Fournisseurs in Paris and I think they give the yarn a completely different look.

Und so schön sie sind… ich glaube, jetzt habe ich sie oft genug gestrickt. Der nächste, der sie begehrlich anschaut, der strickt sie sich selber. 😮

I still love the pattern… but I think three times is enough. The next one who gives them longing looks can knit them herself. 😮

Dreher (pattern for men’s socks)

SockenDiese Socken hatte mein Bruder ja zu Weihnachten bekommen. Da kamen sie gut an und ich bin endlich dazu gekommen, auch die Anleitung dafür zu schreiben.

My brother got those socks for Christmas. He likes them and I like my pattern also, so finally I’ve found the time to sit down and write the pattern.

Die Socken werden von der Spitze nach oben gestrickt und außer linken und rechten Maschen muß man nichts können. Und zählen… Denn Langeweile kommt trotzdem nicht auf, denn es gibt eine rechte und eine linke Socke, die gegengleich gestrickt werden. Ich hoffe, ich habe wirklich alles richtig aufgeschrieben.

The socks are knitted toe up and you only need to know how to knit and how to purl. And how to count… Even though the technique is easy knitting is not boring. You have a left and a right sock and as you can see the pattern is mirrored. And I really, really hope I’ve written down everything correctly.

Dreher SockenDie Anleitung ist für Größe 43, wer es länger oder kürzer braucht, sollte versuchen, das über die Spitze oder die Nadelstärke zu regulieren, denn das Muster zu verändern ist nicht ganz trivial. (Wobei am Anfang Reihen weglassen nicht ganz so problematisch ist.) Von der Weite her ist es weniger schwierig, denn das Muster bietet da viel Elastizität und Spielraum.

The pattern is for German shoe size 43, if you need it smaller or longer better try to make most of the changes in the toe region or by changing needle size. Changing the pattern is less easy. (Though leaving out pattern rows at the beginning or the end is less critical.) Widthwise it shouldn’t be much of a problem, the pattern includes a lot of elasticity.

Keks und Schokolade und was zum Spielen und eine Überraschung… (Weihnachtsnachtrag)

… mehr war zur Frage nach einem Weihnachtswunsch aus meinem Mann nicht herauszubekommen.

Cookie and Chocolate and something to play with and a  surprise, that was all I got from DH when I asked him what he might want for Christmas. (I just recognized that I forgot to tell you that story, so there is still something Christmas related.) I might have to explain the phrase, because it refers to two popular adds in Germany. One was for a cookie with a chocolate side that was marketed as „you don’t have to decide between cookie and chocolate, you can have cookie and chocolate now“. (Yes, we did have chocolate coated cookies before in Germany. So if you don’t have a new product you need more clever marketing. I do not even remember which brand it was…) The other used to be a commercial where a father went on a business trip and then promises his kid to bring him a gift when he returns. So the kid asks for chocolate, something to play with and a surprise. So poor daddy would have to buy three gifts, if there was not the super great „Überraschungs-Ei“ (=surprise egg). (Today it is called Kinder Überraschung, but the product is the same. An egg shaped shell of chocolate with a tiny toy inside which is a surprise because you don’t know what you will get.)

So, was macht man mit so einer Angabe?

Man läßt den Zufall walten. Ich machte einen Spziergang über den Weihnachtsmarkt am Neumarkt und kaufte an jeder fünften Bude den billigsten Artikel. 🙂

Geschenke vom WeihnachtsmarktSo.. what to make of this?

I took a stroll over the Christmas market at Neumarkt and bought the cheapest thing at every fifth booth. 🙂

Und das kam dabei raus. (Klick aufs Bild für die größere Ansicht.) Die Freßbuden habe ich rausgelassen, denn eine vier Tage alte Bratwurstsemmel mag keiner mehr essen. Und es ist erstaunlich, für wie wenig Geld man was bekommt. Die meisten Sachen lagen zwischen 70 Cent und 5 EUR. Einen Stand mit Lederwaren habe ich ausgelassen, denn da kostete das billigsten Kartenetui 14 EUR und war häßlich und nutzlos. Die warmen Puschen (hinter der Unicef-Karte) kosteten 7 EUR und die Schokolade war teuer. Aber Schokolade mußte sein, die war ja gewünscht. Das ist eine Schraube und eine Mutter aus Schokolade und so exakt gearbeitet, daß man sie wirklich ineinander drehen kann. Das war’s dann wert. (Und ich weiß jetzt, daß der „Weihnachtsmarkt der Engel“ genau 95 Buden hatte. *g*)

And that’s the result. (Click on the pic shows a bigger version.) I left out all the food booths because a four day old sausage in a bun is no pleasure at all. And it is surprising how much you get for few money. Nearly all gifts were between 0,50 EUR and 5 EUR. I only left out a booth with Italian leatherware were the cheapest thing was an ugly card holder which would be useless to DH. The warm slippers (behind the UNICEF postcard) were 7 EUR and the chocolate was really expensive. But that was okay because I would have to buy chocolate anyhow (see above) and it is not only good chocolate, it is also shaped as screw and nut and they are functional! That was worth it. (And I now know that the „Market of the Angels“ had 95 booths in 2011.)

Ich habe alles einzeln eingepackt, beschriftet („Überraschung 1“, „Überraschung 2“,… „Schokolade“, „Keks“ – der kam aus meiner eigenen Produktion) mit einem langen AlterfilS 80 aneinandergeknotet und dann durfte mein Herzblatt Stück für Stück auspacken. Kommt davon, wenn man so was wünscht.

Then I wrapped each item, stuck labels to it („Surprise 1“, „Surprise 2“,… „chocolate“, „Cookies“ – I took one I had made myself for Christmas), connected all parcels with one long thread AlterfilS 80 and then under the Christmas Tree DH had a lot of items to unwrap. You get what you deserve if you make wishes like that…

(Ganz am Ende hing dann auch noch ein „richtiges“ Geschenk, ein schönes antiquarisches Buch. Ich bin ja dann doch nicht so.)

(The long thread ended in a real gift then, I found a beautiful antique book for him also. I’m not that stone-hearted.)

Small Christmasy Things

MaschenmarkiererUnd her noch die letzten weihnachtlichen Kleigkeiten aus meiner Produktion: Die aktuelle „Mode“ der Maschenmarkierer hat den Vorteil, daß man immer nette Kleinigkeiten für Mitstrickerinnen basteln kann.

Now the last small Christmas gifts from my production: Since stitchmarkers are coming into fashion more and more you can always make nice little gifts for fellow knitters.

Die beiden linken haben als Basis eine Schellackperle aus Indien, dazu Pailetten und Rocailles, die beiden rechten sind glaube ich ebenfalls aus Indien, sind aber normale Glasperlen in Fischform und wieder Rocailles dazu. (Ein Klick aufs Bild fördert eine größere Version zu Tage, auf der man mehr erkennt.)

The left ones feature a shellac bead from India together with seed beads and sequins, the right ones are fish shaped glass beads (maybe also from India) and again some seed beads. (If you click on the pic you’ll get a bigger version that shows more.)

Brothersocks

Mein Bruder latscht seine Socken ja schneller durch als ich sie stricken kann, also bekam er Weihnachten nicht nur zwei geflickte Paare zurück, sondern auch ein Paar neue gestrickt.

Socke in DoseMy brother walks through his socks quicker than I can knit them. So he got two pairs darned for Christmas and one pair new.

(I managed to pack all three pairs in the can that I had decorated with Christmas fabric.)

Ich habe es sogar geschafft, alle drei Paar in diese Dose zu stopfen, die ich mit Weihnachtsstoff bezogen habe.

Als Material habe ich diesmal Socks‘ Wool „Lucca“ von Schewe genommen und weil mein Bruder außerdem Löcher am Schaft des letzten Paares gemeldet hatte, habe ich einen Faden Alterfil AS120 mitlaufen lassen. Denn ich dachte, er hätte beim Anziehen den Schaft zerrissen. Inzwischen habe ich die Socke gesehen und bin schlaufer, die Löcher kommen ziemlich sicher von Motten. (Wenn jemand ein Mittel weiß, mit dem ich die Socken Mottensicher impregnieren könnte? Denn der Austausch von Mottenpapier im Schrank bei meinem Bruder scheint nicht so regelmäßig zu funktionieren.)

I used a yarn called Socks‘ Wool „Lucca“ by Schewe this time. And since my brother had reported holes in the leg/cuff region of the latest socks I tried to strengthen these by knitting a sewing thread Alterfil AS120 together with my sock wool. Because I had assumed, the holes came from pulling to strong while putting the socks on. Well, I’ve seen the damaged sock now and it looks very much like moths… (So if anyone knows something I could put on the socks to protect them let me know! My brother knows what moth repellent for the wardrobe is, but he does not seem to exchange it often enough.)

BrudersockenThe pattern is a very easy one, just knit and purl and I made it myself, like most of my sock patterns. (I guess I will make it a pattern once I have the time. It will be very beginner friendly and for all who want to try a pattern on a sock for the first time.) Though I think having it mirrored is a nice effect.

Das Muster ist ein sehr einfaches, nur rechte und linke Maschen und wie meistens bei meinen Socken. (Und ich denke, ich werde es aufschreiben und zum Download hinterlegen, wenn ich die Zeit dafür habe. Es wäre jedenfalls sehr anfängerfreundlich oder auch für alle, die statt Stinos mal was anderes versuchen wollen, aber immer Angst davor haben.) Und obwohl es ganz einfach ist, sieht es doch recht interessant aus, durch den gespiegelten Effekt.

My first Wollmeise

Auf meinen „Maschenkunst unterwegs“ Bildern war der Schal ja schon immer mal zu sehen, jetzt an Weihnachten wurde er als Geschenk überreicht. Ich bin zum Glück nicht die einzige, die auf viele, viele Schals steht und meine Schwägerin strickt nicht selber. 🙂

The scarf was already visible on a few of my „Maschenkunst unterwegs“ pictures, now on Christmas it was given to its new owner. Luckily my SIL loves scarfes, but doesn’t knit herself. 🙂

One hank „Sockenwolle 80/20 Twin“ by „Wollmeise“ in color „Flaschenpost“ made one scarf.

SchalAus einem Knäuel „Sockenwolle 80/20 Twin“ von Wollmeise in der Farbe „Flaschenpost“ wurde also ein Schal.

Die Anleitung ist aus dem Buch 101 Designer One-Skein Wonders und nennt sich „Marialis End to End scarf“. Um zwei „schöne“ enden zu bekommen wird auf der Anschlagseite mit einem vorläufigen Anschlag gearbeitet, der dann abgekettet wird. Wobei sich die eine Seite durch das Muster nett wellt, die andere nicht, von daher sind dann doch nicht beide Seiten gleich.

Ich habe in der Breite einen Musterrapport mehr genommen und da ich zum Glück mehr Garn hatte als die Anleitung vorsah reichte es trotzdem zu einem ausreichend langen Schal. Das Muster sieht sehr nett aus, ist aber einfach zu stricken. Übrig geblieben sind mir 5g Garn, das paßte also ganz gut.

The pattern used is „Marialis End to End Scarf“ from 101 Designer One-Skein Wonders. The idea is to start with a provisional cast on to make two equally „nice“ scarf ends, because both are casted off the same way. This only works out halfway, because due to the pattern one side is nicely curved, the other not.

I added one repeat widthwise to make the scarf wide enough and since I had more yarn than the pattern calls for it was enough to make a sufficiently long scarf. The pattern looks very nice, but is easy to knit and memorize. The restover are 5g of yarn, so that worked out well.

Lästig war nur der Geruch des Garnes. Vermutlich wird die Wolle nach dem Färben mit einem Haushaltswollwaschmittel (Perwoll oder so?) gewaschen und das ist parfümiert. Und darauf bin ich allergisch. Einen Schal zu stricken war grenzwertig, aber möglich (mit Pausen), Vergnüngen war es keines. Und ich habe noch drei Stränge, einer davon Lace Garn. Da werde ich wohl versuchen müssen, sie VOR dem Stricken zu waschen und zwar in der Maschine. Denn von ein bißchen Handwäsche geht der Waschmittelgeruch nicht raus. Das ist dann wohl der Preis für „handgefärbt“: unprofessionelles Waschmittel. 😮 (Industriegarne riechen nämlich nicht.)

What I was not happy about was the smell of the yarn. It probably is washed after dyeing with a household wool detergent (Perwoll or something?) and those are perfumed. And I am allergic against that. So knitting one scarf while taking enough brakes was doable, but not a pleasure. And I have three more hands, one of them is lace yarn. So I’ll have to prewash those BEFORE knitting and this will have to happen in the washing machine, because just soaking will not get the smell out. So that seems to be the price for „handdyed“: use of non professional detergents. :o) (Yarns dyed by industry do not have any smell.)

Maschenkunst unterwegs (XXV)

Maschenkunst unterwegsDie Aktion läuft zwar nicht mehr lange, aber ein bißchen bin ich doch noch unterwegs, diesmal in Bottrop.

Unschwer zu erkennen liegt ein neues Strickzeug unter dem Baum. Pop Block aus der aktuellen Knitty hat es mir angetan und das Garn ist „Zauberball Stärke 6“ von Schoppel Wolle aus der Maschenkunst. Ganz frisch gekauft im Dezember.

The contest is nearly over, but I am still a bit around, so I have a picture from Bottrop.

And as you can easily see I did cast on something new, Pop Block from knitty, the yarn ist „Zauberball Stärke 6“ by Schoppel Wolle, freshly purchased in December  at Maschenkunst.

Pouch for money gift

Der Kalender ist schon auf dem Weg zu Sara nach Österreich. Mein Dank an alle für die netten Kommentare!

TäschchenUnd jetzt geht es endlich mit den selber gemachten Weihnachts-geschenken los.

Von Frau mhs habe ich mich zu diesem runden Täschlein inspirieren lassen. Geldgeschenke sind ja immer schwierig, aber da ist es gut drin aufbewahrt und weitere Geschenke für den speziellen Zweck können da auch gesammelt werden.

Finally I’ll start to show my self made Christmas gifts.

Frau mhs had inspired my to make a round pouch to give some money. I am not to fond of giving money, but this will be collected for a bigger project over the next years and so the self sewn pouch will keep the money safe over the years.

Genäht ist sie dreilagig, Baumwollstoff mit Weihnachtsdruck, Vlies und Futerstoff. Auf die Oberseite habe ich dann noch fraihand gequiltete bzw. gestickt. Richtig begeistert war ich von dem Stickgarn. Metallicgarne fand ich bislang immer etwas „zickig“ (ich habe Madeira und Mettler) aber dieses hier von Robison-Anton über Alterfil ist absolut genial! Es ist weicher als andere die ich bisher hatte, es läuft problemlos in die Maschine, auch wenn man nicht extra langsam näht, keine Fadenrisse,… ich brauchte nicht mal eine Metallicnadel, Titan Nadel von Organ in Stärke 75 machte den Job einwandfrei. 🙂

Tasche RückseiteUnd auf der Rückseite dann der Reißverschluß.

Nur wie man so eine Tasche richtig rund bekommt bleibt mir ein Rätsel. Da ich die Nahtzugaben nicht einschneiden konnte, sondern versäubern mußte, hat das nicht so gut funktioniert.

What remained a mystery is how to make it really round. Since I had to zigzag the seam allowances I could not clip them. So it couldn’t work out well…

That might also be due to the construction, I made a sandwich from cotton print, batting and lining fabric. On the front side I added a bit of free motion quilting and embroidery, nothing special, just quickly done. But what helped me a lot was the thread. So far I’ve found metallic thread (I’ve had Madeira and Mettler) a bit difficult, you had to sew slowly, it tended to break… but this time I used the Robison-Anton Metallic thread by Alterfil and it made such a difference! It is softer than what I am used to, it didn’t break, I could sew fast and I didn’t even need a special needle for metallic thread, my usual Titan Embroidery Needle by Organ in Size 75 did it perfectly fine. 🙂
