And the raspberry confiture also…

Und nur wenige Tage später, habe ich es dann auch geschafft, die Himbeermarmelade zu versorgen. (Tja, mehr war dieses Jahr nicht…)

And only a few days later I managed to finish the raspberry confiture also. (Well, that was all we had this year…)

Die Stickerei kann man auf dem Stoff nicht wirklich gut lesen, aber es geht ja hauptsächlich darum, die verschiedenen Sorten und Jahrgänge im Lager im Keller auf einen Blick gut unterscheiden zu können. Und dazu ist der Stoff gut.

The embroidery isn’t really well visible on the fabric, but the main purpose is that you can see at a glance which kind of confiture and from which year it is when it is stored in the cellar. And that the fabric will do.

Ich hätte ja lieber was mit rot genommen (blau nahm ich bislang eher für die Brombeermarmelade), aber offensichtlich habe ich in den letzten Jahren nur noch blau genäht, deswegen gibt es keine roten Rest.

I would have preferred to take something red (because usually I took blue for the blackberry confiture), but seems I did only sew blue in the last years, so there are no red remnants left.

(Ja, ich weiß, ein völlig unweihnachtliches Thema… aber bis zu nächsten Sommer wollte ich es dann auch nicht liegen lassen.)

(Yes, I know, the topic is not at all Christmay, New Year or even winter related… but I didn’t want to keep it back until next summer.)

Peach Confiture in Winter?

Nein, natürlich koche ich nicht im Winter Pfirsichmarmelade. Die Pfirsiche hatten wir aus dem Sommerurlaub mitgebracht (eine ganze Steige aus Südfrankreich) und ich hatte sie auch damals brav verarbeitet.

No, of course I did not make peach confiture in winter. When returning from our summer holiday we had brought a batch of peaches from southern France and I made the confiture right away then.

Nur hatte ich dann tatsächlich keine Gelegenheit, die “Kappen” zu nähen bzw. zu sticken. Zuerst waren die Stoffreste nicht zugänglich und danach waren ständig dringendere Projekte.

But then I never made it to sew/embroider the jar covers. First I couldn’t access my remnants and after that there were always more urgent project to do.

Aber jetzt ist das endlich erledigt und ich kann das gleiche für die Himbeermarlemade machen…

But now it is finally done and I can do the same for the raspberry confiture…

Wenn die Zeit für Plätzchen nicht reicht…

If there is not enough time to make Christmas Cookies…

Minikuchen… dann wird auch so ein Mini-Gugelhupf als Weihnachtsgruß gerne genommen.

… then a mini Gugelhupf Cake is a great give-away also.

Ein paar von meinen Weihnachtsolätzchen möchte ich ja gerne selber essen, deswegen gab es für eine Gruppe jeweils einen kleinen Gugelhupf (der Teig mit Kakao und vor allem weihnachtlichen Gewürzen) im Cellophantütchen. Das geht schnell und dafür konnte ich die Weihnachtsgrüße (Tonpapier passend geschnitten und noch mit einem Stempel fix auf Weihnachten getrimmt) dann von Hand schreiben. Kam sehr gut an und ging viel schneller, als noch mehr Plätzchen backen… (Und gekostet hat es auch fast nichts.)

I’d like to eat some of my Christmas cookies myself, so for this group I made mini cakes (adding some cocoa and especially spices to my standard dough) instead. Putting them on cheap paper moulds and in small cellophane bags made them look nearly “professional”. And since baking was so fast, I had the time to write the personal greetings (on colored paper, quickly stamped for a bit more Christmas feeling) by hand with my fountain pen. Everybody loved it and it was much quicker than baking even more Christmas cookies… (And a very cheap gift also.)

Queenly Gloves

Meine armes Knäuel “Joey’s Baby Silk” von Queensland Collection  hatte ich ja jetzt schon zwei Mal angestrickt und das Garn hat dabei doch etwas gelitten. Doch der dritte Versuch war endlich ein Erfolg.

My poor ball “Joey’s Baby Silk”by Queensland Collection had suffered quite a bit, because I had started  with it twice, without getting a result. But now I’ve found a pattern that worked.

Dieses wunderschöne Muster nennt sich Queen Anne’s Lace Fingerless Gloves und ist von Erin Currie alias Seamstress Erin und ich habe es (kostenlos!) auf ravelry gefunden.

This oh so beautiful pattern is called Queen Anne’s Lace Fingerless Gloves and was designed by Erin Currie alias Seamstress Erin. And I’ve found it for free (!) in ravelry.

Das Muster ist nicht ganz einfach, aber dadurch, daß man wenige Maschen hat, strickt es sich doch recht zügig und ich konnte es auch schnell auswendig. Gut hat mir gefallen, daß die überzähligen Maschen aus dem Damenzwickel auf der anderen Seite der Hand abgenommen werden. Was der Anatomie meiner Hand eigentlich mehr entgegen kommt.

The lace pattern is not super easy, but all in all the project knits up quickly, because you do not have too many stitches. And I memorized the lace part quite quickly. What I like is the way the extra stitches from the thumb gusset are reduced at the other side of the hand. Seems more anatomical for my hands at last.

Nicht ganz so schön ist, daß sie stark dazu tendieren, sich spiralig um den Arm zu legen. Aber das ist bei rundgestrickt sozusagen “systemimanent”.

The only thing that is not perfect is, that the lace pattern tends to “curl” around the arm. But that is a typical effect from knitting in the round.

Die Hauptschwierigkeit war im Grunde genommen, wie ich die Dinger gespannt kriege. Denn das ist absolut nötig. Ich habe mir dann mit einigen Paaren Herrensocken beholfen und habe kräftig drüber gedampft, das mußte dann reichen.

The most difficult thing was the question how to block it. And blocking was absolutely necessary to bring out the lace pattern nicely. So I finally stuffed them with (hand knitted) men’s socks and steamed them heavily. That had to be enough.

Die fingerlosen Handschuhe sind nicht nur wunderschön, sondern das Garn ist auch sooo supersoft und weich. Eines der wenigen Garne (bisher) aus meiner USA-Bestellung, bei dem es mir leid tut, daß man es hier nicht regulär bekommt. Daraus würde ich auch gerne für Babies stricken, mit so angenehmer Naturfaser.

Those are fingerless gloves are not only realy beauties, the yarn also is sooo soft! It is one of the yarns from my order in the US and one of the few I really regret not getting it here on a regular basis. I’d also like to have it available for baby gifts, because it is natural fiber, but still feels so soft on the skin.

Jetzt muß ich mich nur noch entscheiden, ob ich sie behalte oder verschenke. Zuerst war ich mir sicher, daß ich sie nie hergeben würde, weil sie doch so schön und weich sind. Andererseits habe ich schon so viele, und ich wüßte jemandem, dem ich so was schönes und weiches sehr gerne geben würde… mal sehen…

Now there is a hard decision to take: keeping it or giving them away? First I was sure I would never part with them, because they are so beautiful and soft. On the other hand I have more mitts and gloves than I can wear and I have somebody in mind whom I’d like to give those soft beauties… we’ll see…

The Secret of Coriander

KorianderGarten ist ja nicht so meine Kernkompetenz, aber vielleicht ist hier jemand, der da mehr Ahnung hat?

Gardening is not something I know a lot about, so maybe one of you knows more?

Ich benutze beim Kochen gerne mal das eine oder andere Korianderblättchen (das grüne Zeug, das so ähnlich wie Petersilie aussieht, aber anders schmeckt). Da der auf unserem Wochenmarkt nicht so leicht zu bekommen ist, kaufe ich eine Pflanze. Die hat auch schöne, buschige grüne Blätter. Doch schon nach kurzer Zeit, drei bis maximal zehn Tage, werden die dicken grünen Blätter hart und mager und die Pflanze bildet fleißig fette Samenkapseln. Die ich aber gar nicht will. Dann schmeiße ich die Pflanze weg und kaufe die nächste, mit der sich das Spiel wiederholt. Hat jemand eine Ahnung, was ich tun kann, ob den Koriander länger benutzbar zu halten?

In my cooking I like to use coriander leaves from time to time. Since they are not always available at my grocery market I am buying a plant. The plant normally has the typical soft and wide leaves (similar to parsly, only a different taste). But then, after a few days (typically 3 – 10 if I’m lucky) the leaves transform into something thin and hard and a lot of round “fruits” form. Then I am discarding the plant and buy a new one. And so on… Any idea why this is so and (even more interesting) what I can do to keep the “soft leaves” status for longer?

Und die zweite Frage: Was ist in dem Topf auf dem Bild oben passiert? Ich habe den Koriander drin gelassen, weil es für eine frische Pflanze eh zu spät im Jahr ist und dieser kleine Topf entwickelte sich in kurzer Zeit zur “grünen Hölle” mit allen möglichen Gräsern. Keine Ahnung was…. macht Koriander den Boden fruchtbarer? (Das Bild ist von Mitte November, also als es schon gut kalt war.)

And second question: What happened to my flower pot on the picture above? Since it was already to cold for planting a new one I just left the coriander plant in the pot where it developped in short time to a kind of mini-jungle. Out of I don’t know which plants…. is coriander a kind of fertilizer to the soil? (The picture was taken mid november when it was already quite cold.)

Die Rede ist natürlich vom Hitchhiker Tuch von Martina Behm (aus “Strick mich”), das wohl inzwischen auch jeder gestrickt hat. Und endlich auch ich.

Tuch HitchhikerI am talking about the Hitchhiker shawlette by Martina Behm (from “Strick mich”) which everybody has done by now. And finally me, too.

Als Garn habe ich mir Mini Mochi von Crystal Palace Yarns in der Wollbox bestellt. Das Garn hat Sockenwollstärke, ist aber kaum gedreht und dadurch sehr schön weich. Die Mischung aus Merino mit Nylon mag dazu beitragen. Dazu ein langer Farbverlauf… davon gerne mehr. Nicht so für Socken, aber ganz sicher für Tücher. Schade, daß es das Garn in Deutschland nicht so leicht gibt.

As yarn I’ve choosen Mini Mochi by Crystal Palace Yarns I’ve ordered from Wollbox. It is a fingering yarn, but hardly twisted, so it is much softer than normal sock wool. 80 % Merino and 20% Nylon might help the softness. Add a long color run… and I’d like to have more of it. Really a pity, that the yarn is not easily available in Germany.

Ich mag auch das Tuch, es strickt sich ganz einfach, perfekt für Nebenher und ohne viel Denken und das Ergebnis ist dennoch sehr effektvoll. So man das passende Garn findet…

I like the shawlette, it knits up very easily, it is perfect for mindless knitting and the result is very attractive. As long as you find the right yarn…

Treat Stocking 2013

WeihnachtssockenDieses Jahr sind mir die Ideen für originelle Täschchen ausgegangen, deswegen gibt es langweilige Socken.

This year I ran out of ideas for my treat bags, so the traditional stocking shape had to do.

Immerhin ging es mal tatsächlich schnell und ich konnte alles aus Vorräten bestreiten: Eine Seite ist Weihnachtsstoff, eine Seite aus meiner Restekiste. Dazu Kordel und zwei Perlen an den Enden. Und… ich war tatsächlich im November damit fertig, weil es nicht nur schnell ging, sondern ich auch zeitig angefangen hatte.

On the plus side: They were really made quickly and I could do it entirely from stash. One side is fabric with Christmas themed print, the other side comes from my remnants bin. And I had finished all 20 of them in November because they were not only quick to make but I also started in time.

Und die zweite Häkelnadel ist “aufgebraucht”…

“Used Up” the Second Hook…

Der Herbst scheint keine gute Jahreszeit für Häkelnadeln zu sein.

Abgegriffene HäkelnadelAutumn doesn’t seem to be a good time for crochet hooks .

Dieses Jahr hat der Griff der Prym Häkelnadel den Geist aufgegeben. Nach weniger als zwei Jahren und etwa der Hälfte von 276 Hexagons.

This year it was the handle of the Prym crochet hooks that “gave in”. After less than two years and about half of 276 hexagons.

Soft Feel Lackierung ist halt nicht wirklich was für langlebige Produkte. Besonders nicht für solche, die wirklich viel angefasst werden. Zum Glück, kann man sie trotzdem noch benutzen und muß nicht ausgetauscht werden.

Soft feel finish is not really good for products that are supposed to last long. Especially not for those that get a lot of touch and handling. Luckily I can still use it and do not have to replace it.

Findings from the Christmas Market

Zu Weihnachtsmärkten habe ich ja ein etwas gespaltenes Verhältnis. Einerseits mag ich sie sehr gerne, mag es, die vielen schönen handwerklichen Werke zu sehen (nicht immer leicht zu finden, unter der industriellen Massenfertigung), den Geruch nach Glühwein, Würstchen, Waffeln, Maronen, Schokoladenfrüchten,… Andererseits mag ich es nicht mehr, wenn man vor lauter Menschenmengen nicht mehr da stehen bleiben kann, wo man möchte und nicht mehr weiter laufen, wenn man es möchte.

My feeling about Christmas markets are a bit mixed. I absolutely love strolling there, admireing the crafted things in individual designs (often hard to find between boring industrial production), love the smell for spiced wine, grilled saussages, wafers, fruits in chocolate, marrons,… But what I do not like is, if there are so many people that I can’t stop where I want to and can’t walk on, if I want to.

Nun hatte ich aber am Freitag nicht wirklich die Wahl, denn ich mußte von A nach B und einer der Kölner Weihnachtsmärkte lag dazwischen. Dann konnte ich den Besuch genauso gut genießen.

Now on Friday I didn’t really have the choice, because I had to get from A to be and one of the Cologne Christmas Markets was right between. So I decided to enjoy the visit anyhow.

Und so fand ich dann, eher unerwartet, auch einen Stand mit Kurzwaren. Mit “vintage” Material, um genau zu sein.

So I found, a little unexpectetly, a booth with notion. Vintage notions.

Da wanderte dann zum einen dieses Webband mit der Eisenbahn in meine Tasche.

So this ribbon with an old fashioned railroad locomotive became mine.

Und noch weniger vorbeigehen konnte ich an diesem Set mit kleinen Glasknöpfen. Die Aufnahme ist im Macromodus, damit man die feine Struktur erkennt. Die Knöpfe haben die Größe kleiner Blusenknöpfe. Ich glaube, so etwas findet man heute nicht mehr. Diese hier sind aus den 1950er oder 1960er Jahren aus Neugablonz. (Und ich habe zwei Sets gekauft.)

And what I also absolutely had to buy were those tiny glass buttons. The photo was taken in “macro” mode, so you could see the details. The real size is a small shirt button. I don’t think you could find that today. Those were made in the 105ßs or 1960s in Neugablonz. (And I’ve purchased two sets.)

Allen Kölnern (und denen, die vor Weihnachten noch in diese Stadt kommen) sei also der “Weihnachtsmarkt der Heinzel” ans Herz gelegt. Zwischen Heumarkt und Alter Markt sind die Boden der “Antikgasse”, wo es nicht nur alten (Mode)Schmuck gibt, sondern auch einen Stand mit schönen alten Bändern, Knöpfen und noch so allerlei. Zu sehr mäßigen Preisen, wie ich finde.

So if you happen to be in Cologne you should check the “Heinzel Christmas Market”. Between Heumarkt and Alter Markt are some booths grouped together as “Antikgasse” where not only antique bijoux are sold, but also one dealer has those nice vintage notions of all kinds. And the prices were extremely reasonable.
