Grannies, first month

Auf besonderen Wunsch einer einzelnen Dame gibt es heute schon ein erstes Fortschrittsbild meines Monumentalwerkes “Häkeldecke”.

Ich arbeite immer zehn Hexagons vom gleichen Muster in der gleichen Farbfolge. Die Größe gleich zu halten ist echt eine Herausvorderung, weil ich mit der kleineren Häkelnadel außerden viel fester häkeln muß. Eines habe ich auch versiebt, aber gut… ich hoffe, ich finde da rein.

I’m working ten hexagons of each motif in each color pattern. Keeping them mostly the same size isn’t easy. It is not enough to take a smaller hook, I also have to crochet tighter. So the first of that pattern is much to big… well, I hope I’ll get used to it.

Zwei “Päckchen” sind fertig, im ganzen sind es 28 Hexagons im ersten Monat. Die Fäden vernähe ich jeweils gleich (teilweise kann man sie auch gleich mit festhäkeln, aber wegen der vielen Lücken im Muster geht das nicht überall), gebügelt wird am Schluß. Trotzdem habe ich mal ein paar nebeneinander ausgelegt um ein Gefühl dafür zu bekommen, wie viele ich brauchen werde. Ganz grob über den Daumen schätze ich 350 bis 400, was hochgerechnet eineinhalb bis zwei Jahre dauern wird. Vermutlich eher zwei Jahre bis… denn am Anfang ist man ja immer motivierter, dann sind es zu viele Knäuel um es auf längere Reisen mitzunehmen und da steht dieses Jahr schon mindestens einmal “Weitfortien” an… wird also Pausen geben.

I’ve finished two batches (à 10 hexagons) and I have a total of 28 hexagons. I am weaving the ends of each piece as soon as it is finished, but steaming will be at the end. And I did lay out some testwise to guess the number I’ll need. So my guesstimation is 350 – 400 hexagons and counting from this months progress the time it’ll need might be 18 – 24 month. More 2 years plus… I’m always more motivated in the beginning and then I know I will travel some time this year to “Farawayia” and this is not a good holiday project, it needs to many different skeins. So there will be some month(s) with very slow or no progress.

Will da wirklich jemand ein monatliches Update sehen? Oder doch lieber nur jährlich? Ich will ja niemanden zu sehr langweilen…

Is there really anyone who wants monthly updates on this project? Or better once a year? I don’t want to bore you too much…

Dreher (pattern for men’s socks)

SockenDiese Socken hatte mein Bruder ja zu Weihnachten bekommen. Da kamen sie gut an und ich bin endlich dazu gekommen, auch die Anleitung dafür zu schreiben.

My brother got those socks for Christmas. He likes them and I like my pattern also, so finally I’ve found the time to sit down and write the pattern.

Die Socken werden von der Spitze nach oben gestrickt und außer linken und rechten Maschen muß man nichts können. Und zählen… Denn Langeweile kommt trotzdem nicht auf, denn es gibt eine rechte und eine linke Socke, die gegengleich gestrickt werden. Ich hoffe, ich habe wirklich alles richtig aufgeschrieben.

The socks are knitted toe up and you only need to know how to knit and how to purl. And how to count… Even though the technique is easy knitting is not boring. You have a left and a right sock and as you can see the pattern is mirrored. And I really, really hope I’ve written down everything correctly.

Dreher SockenDie Anleitung ist für Größe 43, wer es länger oder kürzer braucht, sollte versuchen, das über die Spitze oder die Nadelstärke zu regulieren, denn das Muster zu verändern ist nicht ganz trivial. (Wobei am Anfang Reihen weglassen nicht ganz so problematisch ist.) Von der Weite her ist es weniger schwierig, denn das Muster bietet da viel Elastizität und Spielraum.

The pattern is for German shoe size 43, if you need it smaller or longer better try to make most of the changes in the toe region or by changing needle size. Changing the pattern is less easy. (Though leaving out pattern rows at the beginning or the end is less critical.) Widthwise it shouldn’t be much of a problem, the pattern includes a lot of elasticity.

“Maschenkunst unterwegs”: the result

Inzwischen war ja die Endauslosung der “Maschenkunst unterwegs” Aktion. Und ich muß sagen, für mich hat sich das gelohnt, denn ich habe zwei der Gutscheine gewonnen, im Ganzen 60 EUR, weil auch in beiden Fällen das Garn aus der Maschenkunst kam. Deswegen zeige ich noch mal die beiden Photos, die mir Glück gebracht haben.

Und dabei ist noch gar nicht berücksichtigt, wie viel Spaß ich dabei hatte, als ich sie gemacht habe! Danke, Daniela, für diese tolle Idee!

And that doesn’t take into account all the fun I had while making them! Thank you, Daniela, for that fun idea!

Maschenkunst unterwegs(Das war übrigens nicht alles, im September gab es auch schon mal einen 10 EUR Gutschein, für eines der Mallorca Bilder. Wobei… auf denen war überall Wolle von der Maschenkunst drauf, dann hätten es doch 20 EUR sein müssen? Das muß dann doch eines der anderen Bilder aus Paris gewesen sein. Oder war die Verdoppelung nur für die Endauslosung? Egal…. Ach ja, im Juli war ich die einzige Einsenderin, auch da waren es schon mal 10 EUR. 🙂 Wirklich lohnenswerte Sache, vom Spaßfaktor mal ganz abgesehen!)

(And that wasn’t all… I had already won 10 EUR in September and 10 EUR in July when I was the only one to send in pictures. So that was not bad at all, plus all the fun taking the pictures.)

Das beste ist aber… Die Aktion geht weiter! Deswegen werde ich auch dieses Jahr viel Spaß beim photographieren haben und ihr müßt euch das alles angucken. Und weil jetzt inzischen auch mehr Leute mitmachen, gibt es auf der Maschenkunst Seite auch viel mehr Bilder zu sehen. Und die anzugucken macht fast so viel Spaß, wie selber knipsen. 🙂

And that’s not all… Maschenkunst unterwegs continues! So I’ll have more fun taking pictures this year. And since there are now more people taking part there are more pics to see also. And watching these is nearly as much fun as making my own. 🙂

Mono Grannies

Der eine oder andere mag sich schon gewundert haben, was die ganze Häkelei so soll. Der Grund ist einfach: Ich finde diese Häkeldecken im Patchwork Stil (neudeutsch “Granny Square” genannt) sehr schön. Kann mir aber so was buntes nicht in meinem Wohnzimmer vorstellen, denn das ist schon chaotisch genug. Aber… wo steht geschrieben, das so ein Ding bunt sein muß? Richtig, nirgendwo!

Some might have been a bit surprised that I was crocheting quite a bit. The reason is simple: I like Granny Square Plaids, but I can’t imagine to put something that colorful in my living room. Which is chaotic enough, even without a big thing with random colors. But… there is no law that they have to be multicolor, right?

Mono GranniesAlso habe ich schon vor geraumer Zeit angefangen, Wolle in creme und beige Tönen zu kaufen. Dazu habe ich gezielt bei Sonderangeboten nach Garnen Ausschau gehalten, die für Nadelstärke 3,5 – 4 ausgelegt waren und bin mit ein wenig Geduld in der Maschenkunst fündig geworden.

I’ve started to by wool on cream and beige quite some time ago. I picked them on sale and choose yarns that were specified for 3.5mm – 4.0mm needles/hooks. A bit of patience and I got them all in very good quality at Maschenkunst.

Die weiße katia “linen” ganz links hatte ich noch als recht großer Rest (gut 3,5 Knäuel), die war damals von WollArt. Dann habe ich “Morena” von Schachenmayr nomotta, 20 Knäuel in einem sehr hellen Ton, 6 Knäuel von ggh “Boulino”, 10 Knäuel von einem dunkleren Ton der “Morena” und 9 Knäuel ggh “Samoa”. Ich habe keine Ahnung, ob das Garn reicht und behalten mir auch vor, noch einen oder zwei Töne dazuzukaufen, aber die Riesentüte Garn geht mir im Schrank allmählich arg im Weg um und außerdem WILL ich endlich anfangen!

On the left is some “linen” by katia, here I had more than 3 skeins left over from another project (that is the only one that was purchased at WollArt). Next is “Morena” by Schachenmayr nomotta, I have 20 skeins in a very clear cream shade. Then 6 skeins “Boulino” by ggh, 10 skeins of a darker and variegated shade “Morena” and 9 skeins “Samoa”, also by ggh. I have not the slightest idea if that is enough yarn, and if something crosses my way I might buy one or two shades more, but the big bag with that yarn was getting in my way to often and also I finally WANT to start!

Die Motive habe ich mir aus dem Buch “Beyond the Square” zusammengesucht, die Probeläppchen habt ihr ja schon gesehen. Was mir gleich sehr gut gefiel war Motiv 30, das wollte ich unbedingt. Damit war klar, daß ich als Form keine Quadrate sondern Hexagons nehme und auch, daß das zweite Motiv (ich wollte wenigstens zwei verschiedene Motive) die gleiche Größen haben müßte. Besonders der zweite Punkt war nicht ganz einfach. Letztlich habe ich Motiv 54 genommen, allerdings nur die ersten vier Runden. Danach mit festen Maschen abschließen. Und außerdem arbeite ich Motiv 30 mit einer 4mm Nadel und Motiv 54 mit einer 3,5mm Häkelnadel. Damit klappt es.

I picked the motifs from the book “Beyond the Square”. You did see the testing motifs in the blog already. The one I liked instantly was motif 30, I absolutely wanted to use it. So it was decided it would be hexagons, not squares and also which size the second motif was supposed to have. (I wanted at least tow different pattern.) Especially the thing with the size was not so easy. In the end I choose motif 54, but only round 1-4 of the pattern. The finishing with sc. Also I am working motif 30 with a hook in size G and motif 54 with a smaller one in size E. So I get them both the right size.

Wie viele Patches ich im ganzen brauche vermag ich nicht abzuschätzen. (Oder will es nicht wissen, weil die Anzahl zu frustrierend wäre…) Ich nadel halt jetzt mal los und in einigen Jahren ist dann hoffentlich eine Decke fertig…

I cannot even guess how many hexagons I will need (or maybe I do not want to calculate, the number might be too frustrating..). I am starting now, crocheting on and on and in some years from here I hope to end with a plaid…

Einem geschenkten Spatterdash…

…. sieht man nicht auf die Hände. Oder so.

After my own Spatterdash Wristwarmers wore well and were warm I decided to make a second pair as a gift for a friend. She’s got smaller hands than me, so I could even use the Noro that was left after I had made the Skew socks. (Which I’ve passed on to a child meanwhile because they became smaller and more felted with every wash.)

HandwärmerMeine eignen Spatterdash Handwärmer hatten sich ja bewährt, sahen nicht nur nett aus sondern waren auch warm, also gabs die noch mal als Geschenk. Praktischerweise hat meine Freundin kleinere Hände als ich, da reichte der Noro Rest von meinen Skew socken genau. (Welchselbige übrigens inzwischen an ein Kind weitergereicht wurden. Die wurden nämlich mit jeder Maschinenwäsche kleiner und filziger.)

Man sieht, auch in Größe S sind sie hübsch, die bunten Knöpfe kommen wieder von Plissee Becker. 🙂

You can see that they are pretty in size S also. The buttons come from Plissee Becker as usual. 🙂

Vor grauer Vorzeit, als der weltweite Stricktag noch ein Stricktag und nicht eine unverbindliche Strickwoche war, da gab es in der Maschenkunst für jeden angemeldeten Stricker ein Knäuelchen Wolle. Und so lag seit 2008 ein Knäuel “Scotch Tweed” von katia auf meinem Schreibtisch und wartete auf das passende Muster. Problem war die extrem kurze Lauflänge, die eigentlich für nichts richtig reichte, nicht mal für eine Mütze. (Und als ich mal so weit war, daß ich mir dachte, eine Mütze wäre nett, da gab es das Garn schon nicht mehr.)

Long, long ago, when WWKIP Day was still a WWKIP day and not a week, I was at Maschenkunst and all who registered before got a nice skein of wool as a gift. So since 2008 a Skein of “Scotch Tweed” by katia was sitting on my desk, waiting to be knit. The problem was that it is relatively heavy, so 50g don’t go very far. And it wasn’t enough for anything, not even a had. (And when I had decided I liked a hat the yarn wasn’t available any longer.

Handschuh FetchingBis Isabelle in ihrem Blog Fetching aus der Knitty erwähnte. Und ich in dem Überraschungspaket von WEBS ein lila Knäuel Noro “Retro” fand. Das sollte reichen.

Until Isabelle mentioned Fetching from knitty in her blog. And I remembered a skein Noro “Retro” in lilac from my WEBS grab bag, that looked makeable.

Mit Nadel 3,75 los gelegt, dann nachdem ich fast mit einer Stulpe fertig war, habe ich den Rest des Knäuels gewogen und mir überlegt, daß es doch netter aussähe, wenn ich unten und oben einen schmaleren Streifen lila hätte, statt nur oben einen breiten.

Also alles aufgezogen und noch mal. Ich war trotzdem nach sieben Tagen fertig, inklusive der Zeit, wo sie rum lagen und auf das Vernähen der Fäden warteten. 😉

I started with needles 3.75 mm and nearly finished one wristwarmer. Then I checked how much of the skein was left and decided then, that a small border in Noro at the beginning and the end would be nicer than just one larger block at the top.

So I frogged everything and started again. Even though they were finished after seven days, including the time they were laying around, waiting for the yarn ends to be woven in. 😉

Wristwarmer FetchingUnd weil das ganze so schnell ging und so viel Spaß gemacht hat, habe ich mir noch ein Knäuel “Super Aussi” Merino Wolle von Queensland Collection (auch aus der WEBS Grab bag) geschnappt und noch welche gestrickt.

Die sind superweich und kuschelig, so weich hat sich das Garn auf dem Knäuel gar nicht angefühlt… schöne Überraschung! (Auch für die neue Besitzerin… 🙂 )

And since it was so much fun and went so quickly I made another pair from one skein “Super Aussi” by Queensland Collection. Another yarn from the grab bag from WEBS.

These merino warmers are so supersoft and cuddly, softer than the yarn did feel on the skein… beautiful surprise! (Also for the new owner… 🙂 )

Noro an der Hand

Noro at hands

Daß das Noro Kureyon Sockengarn für Socken nicht wirklich geeignet ist habe ich ja schon rausgefunden. Dieses Socken sind nämlich nach nur wenigen Wäschen so stark eingegangen, daß sie inzwischen Kinderfüße wärmen. Und Handwäsche für Socken ist definitv keine Alternative.

They may call it Noro Kureyon sockyarn, but it is not really suitable for socks. These socks did shrink so much after a few washes that they now are warming the feet of a child. And washing socks by hand is definitely not something that will happen here.

Spatterdash WristwarmersNun hatte ich aber noch ein Knäuel aus der Bestellung damals bei WollArt und als in der Deep Fall Knitty die Anleitung für die Spatterdash Wristwarmers auftauchte war klar, was ich damit machen würde.

But there was one skein left from what I had ordered by WollArt. And when I saw the patter for Spatterdash Wristwarmers in Knitty Deep Fall I knew what I would make of it.

Ich habe Größe M gestrickt, Nadeln 1,75 verwendet und statt sie zu knöpfen wie die Anleitung es vorsieht, habe ich sie zugenäht und nur einige wenige Knöpfe blind aufgesetzt. Da ich mich bei Plissee Becker zwischen den vielen schönen Knöpfen nicht entscheiden konnte, habe ich zwei verschiedene Sorten genommen und abwechselnd aufgenäht.

I used needles 1,75mm and made size M. I decided against buttoning them as the pattern says, I sewed them close and added the buttons as decoration. Less than the pattern calls for. And since I could not decide which to take at the huge choice of Plissee Becker I took two different ones and sewed them on alternately.

Sie tragen sich wunderbar und sind wirklich kuschelig warm. Die innere Seite des Umschlags rollt ein wenig, da sind zwei Maschen Breite für das Perlmuster ein bißchen wenig. Aber wenn man sie an hat, dann stört das nicht mehr.

The wristwarmers are super warm and wear great. The “underflap” tends to roll a bit, besides the two stitches large seed stitch border, 3 stitches might have been better. But once they are on, it’s okay.

Farblich habe ich noch nicht ganz verstanden, was das Prinzip von Noro ist. Außen war das Knäuel mittelblaublau mit braunrot, gestrickt sind sie zur Hälfte grün. (die Handflächen sieht man auf dem Photo nicht). Also ob die Regel lautet “was außen am Knäuel zu sehen ist, sind die Farben die du nicht bekommst” oder “egal was außen am Knäuel zu sehen ist, innen kommt grün”, das weiß ich nicht. Da ich aber vermutlich kein drittes Knäuel davon kaufen werde, werde ich das nie erfahren….

What I could not figure out so far is what the rule for the colors of Noro is. This skein was mostly blue and a bit of brown-red from the outside. But the knitted wristwarmers are about halfway green and turquoise (the palms are not visible on the pic, so most of the green is hidden.) So the rule might be “Whatever you see on the outside of the skein is what you will not get.” or “Whatever you see on the outside, what you will get will be green.” Since I don’t think I will buy a third skein of that Noro I’ll never know….

HäkelmotivHier kommt noch mal ein Motiv aus “Beyond the Square” aus den bereits mehrfach gezeigten Garnen von Schachenmayr und katia.

Das gefällt mir richtig gut, ist aber mit 14cm – 15cm Durchmesser viel zu groß…

Yet another motif from “Beyond the Square”, again the already mentioned yarns from katia and Schachenmayr.

This one I like a lot, only it’s too large…

Maschenkunst unterwegsSo, wenn jetzt jemand auf die Idee kommt, ich hätte das Bild am gleichen Tag aufgenommen wie das vorhergehende, weil die Socke Edelweiss nicht gewachsen ist… keineswegs. Der Fuß war schon halb gestrickt als ich das Muster jenseits des Knöchels weiter berechnet habe und dabei merkte, daß ich leider einen dicken Fehler gemacht hatte.

You might think this picture and the last one were taken the same day because the sock Edelweiss didn’t grow in the mean time… that is wrong. I had half the foot part done when I started to continue my calculations how to guide the pattern over the ankle. Finding out that I had started with a big mistake (= miscalcualtion).

Also bis vier Reihen über die Zehen wieder aufgeribbelt und neu gemacht. Glücklicherweise ist das Strumpfgarn TOM Cotton von Bärenwolle nicht nur sehr schön weich, sondern auch fest genug gezwirnt, um das gut zu überleben.

So I frogged the sock down to toe plus a few rounds and started again. Luckily the Strumpfgarn TOM Cotton by Bärenwolle is not only very soft, it is also dense enough to survive frogging well.

Hier begleitet mich die Socke in einen Waschsalon im Marais in Paris.

Maschenkunst unterwegsAuch von unterwegs aus muß man mal schnell ins Netz, zum Beispiel vom Café in Paris aus, am Boulevard Sebastpol. Und natürlich ist das eine Gelegenheit, mal schnell auf der Maschenkunst Seite nachzugucken, was Daniela gerade neues macht.

Even when I travel I have to check what is going on in the internet, good possibility to profit from the WiFi connection in this Café at Boulevard Sebastopol in Paris. And of course I had to check on the Maschenkunst site what Daniela is doing.

Das Strickprojekt hat gewechselt, ich habe die gut tragbaren Edelweiss-Socken nach einer Anleitung von Barbara Gasteiger auf ravelry angeschlagen. (Und umgerechnet, denn die Socken sind in der Anleitung normal von oben gestrickt, ich bevorzuge aber Toe Up. Außerdem werden sie ein Geschenk für meinen Bruder und ich kann die Größe nicht vorher testen. Also versuche ich mich, die Anleitung an meine üblichen Maschenzahlen anzupassen.) Die Wolle ist diesmal von Wolle Rödel in Bayreuth und es ist “Strumpfgarn TOM Cotton” von Bärengarne. Ich habe das noch nie verstrickt, aber es fühlt sich viel weicher an, als die Baumwollsockengarne die ich bisher von Lana Grossa hatte.

As you can see I changed my project to portable socks. I started the Edelweiss socks by Barbara Gasteiger on ravelry. (I have to change the pattern, because the pattern knits top down and I prefer Toe Up. Also the socks are a gift for my brother and I can’t try them on, so I am trying to keep close to my usual stitch and row count.) The yarn is “Strumpfgarn TOM Cotton” by Bärengarne which I’ve purchased nearly one year ago at Wolle Rödel in Bayreuth. It knits up very soft, feels much softer than the cotton sock yarns from Lana Grossa that I have used so far.
