Vor langer Zeit in diesem Winter wurde eine Schlechtwetterfront namens Daisy angekündigt. Ich versorgte mich mit genug Material um das Wochenende, an dem niemand das Haus verlassen sollte gut zu überstehen. Nun ja, der Sturm fiel im Rheinland weitgehend aus, aber mein Projekt bekam den Namen “Daisy Frost” und ist, pünktlich zum Sommer, auch endlich fertig.

Long ago this winter a storm called “Daisy” was announced. So I made sure to have enough material for the weekend since we were advised not to leave the hose. Well, the storm didn’t really happen here, but my project got the name “Daisy Frost” and is finally finished, right in time for summer.

PulloverÜber meine Garntests hatte ich ja hier schon geschrieben. Entschieden habe ich mich dann in der Tat das ONline Garn zusammen mit dem Wetterhoff “Silvia” zu verstricken und damit “Zoom” von Lang zu ergänzen.

Ich wollte einen zwar dicken, aber dennoch schmalen Pulli, damit ich auch noch eine Jacke drüberziehen kann. Dicke weite Pullis habe ich noch reichlich, ich trage sie nur nie… Also habe ich einen bereits angepassten Shirtschnitt (also mit FBA) genommen und nach dem die Strickteile ausgerechnet.

About my swatching and the yarns I had already been posting here. My choice in the end was that the ONline yarn in combination with Wetterhoff “Silvia” would work best for my project.

I wanted a warm and thick sweater, but quite body hugging and not bulky. I have a good collection of bulky sweaters I never wear because they dont’t fit under a vest… So I took a pattern for a top I had already tested and adapted (including FBA) and made it into a knitting pattern.

Weil mir die Farben in der Kombination so gut gefielen habe ich mich für ein feines Ringelmuster (eine Reihe pro Farbe mit offenen Reihen) entschieden. Kombiniert mit asymmetrischen Längsrippen im rechts-links Muster.

I liked the combination of the colors so I made fine stripes (one row each) and combined them with a asymmetric very wide ribbing.

Obwohl ich das Shirt schon aus sehr weichem und dehnbaren Viscosejersey genäht hatte wurden Schulternähte und Kragen bei dem Strickpullo doch arg lang. Also habe ich mit einem festen Band eingehalten. (Von Hand aufgenäht.) Dadurch mußte ich den Kragen dann zwar noch mal auftrennen, aber das Ergebnis gefällt mir so gut. Daß der Kragen hinten etwas absteht ist beabsichtigt. Damit sich der Saum nicht rollt habe ich elastisches Chiffonband von Mokuba in Paris von Hand innen gegengenäht. Das war so ungefähr das teuerste an dem Pulli, glaube ich.

Pulli von hintenThe top I had already sewn from very soft rayon knit, but still the knit was softer and neckline and shoulder seams did stretch a lot. I stabilised them with a ribbon I’ve handsewn to the seams and neckline. After that I had to frog the collar and redo it with fewer stitches. Now it still stands on the back but that’s intended, I like the effect. To prevent the hemline from curling I’ve sewn an elastic chiffon ribbon from Mokuba in Paris to it. That was probably the most expensive part of the sweater.

Jetzt muß ich nur noch einen Rock dazu nähen, denn zur Hose sieht es ganz bescheiden aus. (Was aber nicht überraschend ist, denn der Pulli war von vorneherein zum Rock geplant.) Die Idee habe ich schon, aber es sind ja noch drei Nähprojekte offen und außerdem brauche ich das vor dem Herbst ja eh nicht. Hoffe ich wenigstens….

Now I have to sew a skirt to go with the sweater because it looks quite … bad with pants. (No surprise, it had always been planned as a sweater to go with a skirt.) I already do have an idea what to make, but there are still three other sewing projects I’ve already started and want to finish before starting the next one. This will be for autumn anyhow. At least I hope that the summer will no longer create a need for thick sweaters…

Swatching again…

Warum heißt es nur immer, man solle eine Maschineprobe vor dem Stricken machen? Bei mir treten Maschenproben immer in Herden auf…

Why do people talk about making a swatch before knitting? Mine always come in groups…

Maschenprobe Lan \Optimistisch habe ich das ONlinegarn doppelt genommen und die Maschenprobe begonnen. Da ich flache Rippen stricken will, wollte ich testen, ob es bei der Maschenprobe einen nenneswerten Unterschied gibt zwischen glatt rechts und ein bißchen links dazu. Also habe ich genug Maschen angeschlagen, um sowohl glatt rechts auszuzählen als auch mit Übergang auf links. Zumindest hier ist das Ergebnis eindeutig, macht keinen Unterschied.

ONline doppelt mit Nadel 5,5… ist keine Superidee. Das läßt sich zwar stricken, aber die Konsistenz des Gestrickten hat was von Brett. Etwas steif.

Ganz anders als das “Zoom” von Lang, das ich gleich noch drangestrickt habe.

Das war also schon mal definitiv die falsche Wahl bzw. auch die falsche Beratung. Viel zu dick, um es doppelt zu nehmen.

I took two balls of the ONline yarn and 5.5mm needles and started knitting. Since I want to purl and to knit I did not only need a swatch in stockinette, but I also needed to know whether a bit of reverse stockinette will make a difference. At least here the result is clear, it does not make a difference.

Apart from that… two strands of the ONline yarn create something quite stiff, not good unless you want a sweater that can stand on its own.

And very different from the texture of the “Zoom” yarn on the upper part. The ONline is way to think, wrong choice (and a bit of wrong counseling.)

Maschenprobe Online \Dann fiel mir ein, daß ich ja für meine Stole ein graues Lace Garn gekauft und doch nicht verwendet hatte. Lace Garn ist dünn. Also mal einen Strang Wetterhoff “Silvia” mit ONline “Season 160” zusammengenommen.

Fühlt sich gut an. Produziert auch 22 R auf 10cm wie das “Zoom”. Allerdings braucht man 16,5 Maschen statt 16 Maschen auf zehn Zentimeter. Eine halbe Maschen scheint nicht viel, aber bei einem Pulli addiert sich der Unterschied natürlich irgendwann auf.

Und, der gravierendste Nachteil, “Silvia” aus Wolle und Seide ist nicht waschmaschinenfest. Das war jetzt nicht die Idee…

Then I remembered the grey lace yarn I had purchased but finally not used for my grey shawl. Lace yarn is very fine. So I tried one strand of ONline “Season 160” and one strand of Wetterhoff “Silvia”.

Feels good, makes 22 rows for 10 cm, but needs 16.5 stitches and not 16 like “Zoom”. Half a stitch doesn’t seem much, but on a whole sweater this can add up. And the biggest problem: “Silvia” is silk and wool and can not be washed in the washing machine. Which somehow was not the idea…

Maschenprobe Regia doppeltWobei das Stichwort Waschmaschine meine Gedanken in eine andere Richtung lenkte… Sockengarn, auch gut für Pullis.

Also zwei Reste 4fädige Regia rausgezogen und die nächste Maschenprobe gemacht.

Diese bringt es auf das gleiche Format wie ONline mit “Silvia” zusammen. Hm. Sockenwolle müßte ich kaufen, die anderen beiden wären da. Und die zwei angestrickten Knäuel kann ich auch nicht mehr zurückgeben, die würden dann hier den Vorrat wieder vergrößern (den ich abbauen wollte). Dafür dürfte der Pulli hinterher in die Waschmaschine. Hm…

Vermutlich wird es sich daran entscheiden, ob ich noch in die Maschenkunst komme bevor ich mit der Stola fertig bin…

“Washing machine” triggert another idea. Why not try my all purpose work horse 4 ply sock yarn? So next swatch with two strands of Regia I still had in my stash. Makes the same number of rows and stitches as the ONline – “Silvia” combination.

Sockwool I would have to buy. And it would leave me with those two balls of ONline I cannot give back because I used them for swatching. Which would make grow my stash (which I am trying to reduce). On the other hand this would result in a machine washable sweater… Hm…

Probably the decision will happen according to the fact whether I’ll have time to go to Maschenkunst and buy yarn before the stole is finished and I will have to start “Daisy Frost”…

Das Wochenende mit Sturmwarnung hat mich motiviert, mir noch sicherheitshalber vorher Wolle für mein nächstesn Projekt zu kaufen. Von Sturmtief “Daisy” war bei uns nichts zu spüren, aber mein neues Projekt verdankt ihm den Namen: “Daisy Frost”, denn kalt war es und Schnee hatten wir auch.

We had a weekend with a storm warning and that motivated me to get yarn for my next knitting project before. Well, storm “Daisy” never really arrived her,but I’ll call my new project “Daisy Frost”, because it was cold and we had snow.

MaterialDa es Anfang dieses Jahres wirklich kalt wurde bin ich gerade zu einem Winterpulli motiviert. In meinem Vorrat sind einige Einzelknäuel “Zoom” von Lang, die ich gekauft habe, weil die Farben alle zusammenpassen und wirklich sehr billig waren.

At the beginning of this year it became really cold so I was inspired to knit a warm sweater. I had some balls of “Zoom” from Lang in my stash, different colors each, but fitting together well. That was why I had bought them. And because they were on “ultrasale”.

Eigentlich wollte ich ja irgendwas kleines draus stricken, aber jetzt habe ich Lust zu einem warmen Pulli, deswegen brauchte ich Ergänzung.

In passender Stärke und Farbe und maschinenwaschbar hatte aber nicht mal Maschenkunst was passendes, also habe ich “Linie160 Season” von ONline dazu gekauft. Ähnliche Materialmischung, maschinenwaschbar und doppelt genommen sollte es die gleiche Stärke haben.

Originally I had intended to make something small from the yarn, but now I feel like making a sweater so I had to find a yarn to combine with them. Which was more difficult than expected, even at Maschenkunst they didn’t have something with the right size, color material and able to be machinwashed. So I ended up buying “Linie160 Season” from ONline, about the same material and machinewashable and if I take to strands together it should fit the other yarn.

Nadeln in 5,5 liegen auch bereit, dann muß ich nur mal die Zeit haben, Maschenproben zu machen und zu gucken, ob die Garne wirklich zusammenpassen.

Needles in 5.5 mm (US#9) are ready, I just need the time to start swatching and to find out whther the two yarns will fit together as expected.

Even the longest sweater is finished one day.

… ist irgendwann mal fertig.

Luckily his patience with my knitting is way higher because I’ve started the sweater April 2009 and it was delivered two days before new years eve. And he’s happy with the sweater.

Mit dem Pulli hingegen ist er glücklich und war auch geduldig, denn angefangen hatte ich letztes Jahr im April, übergeben wurde er kurz vor Sylvester.

Ich hatte ja schon einges geschrieben, hier noch mal die Zusammenfassung: Das Modell ist der “Zopfrautenpullover für jeden Tag”, ein Modell von Michael Weinreich aus “Männermaschen“. Das Garn ist “Merino extra” von Schachenmayr nomotta. Verbraucht habe ich etwa 815 g, die Anleitung geht von 750 g für die Größe aus, ich habe den Pulli aber verlängert.

Mit der Anleitung kam ich im großen und ganzen gut klar, auch wenn ich statt des ausgeschriebenen Musters lieber ein Diagramm gehabt hätte. Da passieren dann auch nicht so leicht Fehler… (worin der Fehler in der Beschreibung besteht habe ich hier schon beschrieben).

I’ve already been writing about this sweater, so here I’ll try a resumee: The pattern is “Zopfrautenpulliver für jeden Tag” from Michael Weinreich from his book “Männermaschen“. The yarn is “Merino extra” from Schachenmayr nomotta. It took me about 815 g, according to theinstructions it’s 750g for that size, but my version was a good deal longer.

The instructions in general were fine even though I’d prefer a chart over written instructions for the pattern. This also helps to avoid mistakes in my opinion… (what I think is wrong and what I therefore changed I’ve already described here).

Was ich vermisste war eine Maßtabelle für die Größen. Der Pulloverbesitzer ist lang und dünn, so daß klar war, daß ich den Schnitt würde anpassen müssen. Vermessen der Person und eines am wenigsten schlecht passenden Strickpullovers (Menschen mit nicht-Standardgrößen haben in der Regel ja auch keine passende Kleidung) erbrachte Gr 46/48 in der Weite und eine Verlängerung des Pullovers um 6 cm sowie der Ärmel um 7,5 cm – 10 cm. (Je nach dem womit man verglichen hat.)

What I really missed were measurement tables to determine the right size. The owner of the sweater is long and thin so it was clear from the beginning that I would have to make alterations. So measured him and the least badly fitting sweater of his (non-standard sized people normally don’t have fitting clothes you could refer to) and determined that the sweater would need 6cm more lenght and the sleeves 7.5 cm – 10 cm. (Depending on what I used for the comparison.)

Das Problem ist hier, daß sich jede Wolle etwas anders dehnt und der Vergleichspullover natürlich eine andere Wollmischung hatte und maschinengestrickt war. Merino verhält sich anders, handgestrickt sowieso…

Pullover aus MännermaschenIm Resultat ist (obwohl nach gewaschener Maschenprobe berechnet) die Pulloverlänge gut, die Ärmel könnten 5cm kürzer sein, wobei es dem Träger glücklicherweise nichts ausmacht, die Bündchen einmal aufzuschlagen.

Der Kragen paßt hingegen offen und geschlossen gut. 🙂

The problem is that every yarn behaves differently and the existing sweater also was machine knitting. Merino wool is quite different and hand knitting also.

So the sleeves could have been 5 cm shorter, even though I had calculated with a washed and blocked swatch. Luckily the owner of the sweater doesn’t mind to turn up the cuffs.

The collar on the other side fits well, with the zip open or closed. 🙂

Was ich gegenüber der Originalanleitung verändert habe war, daß ich am Kragen die jeweils ersten und letzten vier Maschen stillgelegt habe und dann von dort aus den Beleg direkt angestrickt habe, statt ihn anzunähen.

What I changed compared to the instructions was that I did not knit the facing for the zip as an extra piece but I attached it directly to the collar. What I would change if I’d do the sweater again: I’d use a firm ribbon instead of the knitted facing to stabilise the zip and make it easier to use it.

Was ich beim nächsten Mal anders machen würde: Statt gestrickter Belege Köperband von innen annähen, weil das den Ausschnitt stabilisiert und der Reißverschluss so leichter zu bedienen wäre. Denke ich zumindest.

Das Fazit ist trotz der kleineren Kritikpunkte positiv: Antoine liebt seinen weichen, warmen und maschinenwaschbaren Pullover und er paßt außerdem besser als alle gekauften, die er sonst hat. 🙂

Ende der Sommerpause…

… zumindest für den Herrenpulli den ich ja schon im Frühjahr angefangen habe.

End of summerbreak, at least for the men’s sweater I’ve started in spring.

Nachdem ich einige Monate nur gehäkelt hatte fühlten sich die Stricknadeln übrigens irgendwie… “falsch” an und es dauerte, bis meine Hände sich wieder daran gewöhnten. Aber dann flutschte es wieder recht zügig. In den Wochen vor dem Urlaub hatte ich noch einige Sitzungen und Seminare, der Urlaub selber hatte Wartezeiten auf Flughäfen, Flüge und zwei längere Bahnfahrten und letztes Wochenende hatte ich noch eine Fortbildung, die nur meinen Kopf, noch aber meine Hände beanspruchte. 🙂

PulloverärmelUnd das heißt, ich bin tatsächlich fertig mit Stricken!

Rückenteil und Vorderteil sind auch schon gewaschen und gespannt, der zweite Ärmel ist mir gerade erst von der Nadel gerutscht und wie man sieht muß hier noch vernäht und gespannt werden.

After some month of crocheting knitting felt somewhat “wrong” and it took me some days to make my hands feel comfortable again with the needles, but then I went on quite fast again. The weeks before my holiday I had to attend some meetings and workshops, the holiday itself brought valuable knitting time while waiting on airports and on trains. And last weekend I took part in another seminar which only required my brain, not so much my hands.

So I’m finished with the knitting part.

Back and front have already been washed and blocked, the sleeves are knit but need weaving the threads and blocking.

Ein bißchen ist aber noch zu stricken, denn der Kragen ist recht hoch und der Reißverschluss bekommt innen eine Blende.

Der Plan ist, die Schulternähte zu schließen, den Kragen anzustricken und die Ärmel (nach dem spannen, versteht sich) anzunähen und den Pulli dann im November vor der endgültigen Fertigstellung dem künftigen Besitzer einmal anzuprobieren. Zwischenanproben waren ja nicht möglich und falls doch noch was neu gemacht werden muß, muß ich wenigstens nicht alles trennen….

There is still a bit of knitting left, because the collar is quite high and the zip gets a facing.

What I plan to do is closing the shoulder seams, knitting the collar and sew the sleeves (after blocking them, of course) and then try it on in november when I hope to meet the future owner of the sweater the next time. There was no possibility to try it on so far and if alterations are necessary I do not have to reopen all of the seams….

Summerbreak!

Pullover VorderteilJa ne, nicht im Blog, keine Sorge. (Oder keine Chance, je nach Sichtweise… )

Aber ich hatte mir ja letzten Sommer dieses Outfit genäht, zu dem mir immer noch die Handtasche fehlt.

Nachdem ich mich endlich entschieden habe, daß ich wohl einfach eine weiße dazu will und natürlich keine gefunden habe, die mir gefällt, muß ich selber aktiv werden.

No, not for the blog, no worries (or no chance, depends on your view…)

Last summer I made myself this outfit, but the handbag question had remained open.

I finally made up my mind and decided I’m wanting a white one. So I started searching for one and couldn’t find one I liked. So I’ll have to make one myself.

Da ich die Tasche schon immer Sommer brauche, mein Freund seinen Pulli aber erst im Winter, geht der Pulli jetzt in die Sommerpause. Immerhin ist schon ein gutes Stück des Vorderteils geschafft.

Allerdings stricke ich die Tasche nicht, nein, sie wird… gehäkelt. Da sie groß werden soll und dicht gehäkelt… muß ich jetzt dringend mal loslegen.

As I’ll be needing the bag already in summer and my friend will not wear his woolen sweater before next winter, the sweater gets a summerbreak now. With a good deal of the front done.

But I will not knit the bag, no, crochet is my technique of choice this time. It’s supposed to be big and densely crocheted, so I should start very soon.

Back: done

Pullover RückenteilIrgendwie geht das sogar schneller als erwartet, das Rückenteil ist schon fertig. (Schon seit einiger Zeit, wie gesagt, im Moment stricke ich wohl schneller als ich blogge…)

Für lange und dünne Männer strickt es sich offensichtlich auch recht zügig.

Progress is quicker than expected, the back is already done. (For a while, actually. Seems I’m knitting quicker than blogging at the moment….)

Knitting for long but thin men seems to be a rather quick thing.

Und falls ihr euch wundert, warum es so häufig Bilder vom Fortschritt gibt: Der künftige Eigentümer des Pullis liest mit. Immerhin hat er die Wolle auch schon bezahlt. 😉

In case you wonder why I’m blogging the progress rather often: The future owner of the sweater is reading here. And he already payed for the yarn… 😉

Now I’ll speed up

ArmausschnittIch habe ja versprochen, daß ich versuche, meine Strickfortschritte endlich zeitnah zu posten, deswegen gibt es jetzt schon wieder eine neues Bild.

Ab hier geht es nämlich schneller weiter: Ich habe die Abnahme für den Armausschnitt beendet, das sind schon 32 Maschen weniger, das merkt man in jeder Reihe.

Am Muster habe ich eine kleine Änderung vorgenommen: Ich lasse eine Rippe rechter Maschen am Armausschnitt entlang hochlaufen. Das gefällt mir besser. Keine große Sache, aber offensichtlich kann ich einfach keine Anleitung benutzen, ohne wenigstens ein bißchen was zu ändern. *g*

As I’ve promised to post my knitting progress more up to date, here is more knitting news.

From here my knitting will speed up, because I did the decreases for the armhole, that makes 32 stitches less, that is enough to feel the difference in every row.

Here I made a small alteration of the pattern: I decided to have a rib of two stitches going up next to the armholeshaping. Not a big deal, but evidently I can do no pattern without changing something… *g*

A train journey…

.. bringt das Stricken voran.

Pullover angestricktAls ich vor Ostern (oh, so lange ist das schon wieder her?) meine Mutter besucht habe, hatte ich Dank zweier Bahnfahrten quer durch Deutschland viel Zeit zum Stricken.

So wurde nicht nur meine Stola fertig, sondern ich habe auf der Rückfahrt den Pulli aus Männermaschen angefangen. Angeschlagen habe ich die Maschen noch vor dem Start und auch zwei Reihen Bündchen gestrickt, aber der Rest war dann wirklich nur eine Bahnfahrt. (Bis Frankfurt, ab da gab es keine Sitzplätze und im Stehen strickt es sich dann doch nicht so gut.)

When I visited my mother before Easter (oops, that long ago?) I had to travel across Germany and as I was going by train I had a lot of time to knit.

So I did not only finish my stole, I also started the men’s sweater from “Männermaschen”. What you see on the pic is one train journey (until Franfurt, then I had to change the train and all seats were already taken. And knitting standing in an overfull train is not so much fun.) minus casting on and knitting the first two rows of the cuffs. That I had already started before leaving my mother.

Testing helps

Ich habe ja den Titelpulli aus “Männermaschen” vor (“Zopfrautenpullover für jeden Tag”) und damit ich nach dem Ende meiner Lace-Stola gleich losstricken kann, habe ich schon mal Probeläppchen gestrickt.

My next knitting plan is the sweater from the cover of “Männermaschen” (called “Zopfrautenpullover für jeden Tag”) and as I want to start immediately after finishing my lace scarf, I already did swatches.

ProbeläppchenZuerst mal mit Nadelstärke 4, wie es in der Anleitung steht. Dabei fiel mir dann auch der erste Fehler in der Anleitung auf… Beschrieben ist “Um 3 M nach rechts zu verkreuzen, 2 M auf die Hilfsnd nehmen und hinter die Arbeit legen. Die folgende M links str., dann die 2 M auf der Hilfsnd rechts str.” Wenn man das tut, wären die rechten Maschen hinten und nicht mehr sichtbar. Korrekt muß es heißen “Um 3 M nach rechts zu verkreuzen, 1 M auf die Hilfsnd nehmen und hinter die Arbeit legen. Die folgenden 2 M rechts str., dann die M auf der Hilfsnd links str.” Und schon sieht das Muster aus, wie auf den Photos in der Anleitung.

Da ich eher locker stricke, war es nicht so überraschend, daß meine Maschenprobe mit Nadelstärke 4 nicht so ganz funktionierte. Die Anleitung fordert 22 M x 32 R für ein 10 cm x 10 cm Quadrat. Meine Maschenprobe hatte 21 M x 31 R. Fast, aber nicht ganz. Liane gab mir dann allerdings noch den heißen Tip, die Maschenprobe mal zu waschen, denn Merino würde sich da doch deutlich verändern. Hmtja… richtig, hatte ich auch schon mal davon gehört. Echt lange her, daß ich “richtig” gestrickt habe… Danach paßte die Maschenprobe wenigstens gar nicht mehr, 20 M x 30 R kam raus.

The instruction suggest needles size 4 so I tried that for my first swatch. And I found a mistake in the description of the pattern… . But the pics in the book are very clear, so I could easily correct the mistake.

As I know that I tend to loose knitting I was not surprised to find, that my swatch had not exactly the required size. 22 stitches x 32 rows are supposed to make a 10 cm x 10 cm square. Mine was 21 stitches x 31 rows, so nearly correct. Only Liane gave me the valuable hint to wash my swatch because merino can change a lot. (Yes, I vaguely remembered that. It’s really a long time since I did serious knitting…) And indeed 20 stitches x 30 rows was definitely wrong.

Also das ganze noch mal mit Nadel 3,5. (Auf dem Bild die rechte Maschenprobe.) Jetzt sind es 23 M auf 30 R. (Den Effekt hatte ich übrigens schon öfter, meine Maschenproben verändern sich zwar in der Breite, aber kaum oder nicht in der Höhe….) Die fester gestrickte Maschenprobe verändert sich auch nach dem Waschen nicht sehr. Jetzt sind es knapp 23 M und 31 R in der Höhe. Wobei sich die Maschenprobe aber genauso gut auf 22 M Breite glattstreichen läßt. Und ein Pullover dehnt sich immer etwas durch das Eigengewicht, von daher werde ich ihn mit 3,5er Nadeln stricken (und die Bündchen mit 3er Nadeln).

Daß sich die festere Maschenprobe durch das Waschen nur wenig verändert hat noch einen Vorteil: Ich kann die Einzelteile vor dem zusammennähen Waschen und in sauber in Form legen, muß aber den Pulli nicht noch mal waschen, nachdem ich den Kragen angenäht habe… (Und gut, daß ein ein Zusatzknäuel geschenkt bekommen habe, die Probeläppchen waren wohl etwa ein halbes Knäuel.)

So picking needles size 3,5 and next swatch (the right one on the pic above). Now I have 23 stitches x 30 rows. (That is something that often happens to me, my swatch changes in width, but not in length…) This swatch changes less after washing. The result is a scant 23 stitches and 31 rows. And I can easily smooth it to the desired stitch and row count. And a sweater always changes a bit because of its own weight when its worn. So size 3,5 will be my needles (And 3,0 for the cuffs.)

The firmer knit swatch changes evidently less and that has another advantage: I can wash the pieces and shape them well before sewing the sweater, but I don’t have to wash the sweater again after doing the knit on collar…. (All that swatching took about half a skein of wool, really good I got one extra.)
