Findings from the Flea Market

Da das Wetter bei meinem letzten Parisbesuch eher gemischt war, war es eine gute Gelegenheit, mal wieder auf einem Brocante stöbern zu gehen. (Wer am ersten Juniwochenende oder am letzten Novemberwochenende in Paris ist sollte sich den Brocante der Mairie du 3e generell nicht entgehen lassen, es ist einer der interessanteren mit nicht völlig überzogenen Preisen.)

At my last visit in Paris the weather was quite so-so, good time to visite a „brocante“. (And if you happen to be in Paris the first weekend in June or the last weekend in November you should go and see the Brocante du Mairie du 3e. It is one of the more interesting ones, with more original old things than cheap Asian produce and the prices are not chepo but not lunatic either.)

Jedenfalls stieß ich dort auf diesen offensichtlich schon älteren Versuch, den individuellen Unterschieden weiblicher Anatomie gerecht zu werden.

I’ve spotted this mannequin that shows that adjustability is not a recent idea. Even at earlier days they tried to find solution that take the variations of the individual female bodies into account.

Ob das gut funktioniert hat vermag ich nicht zu sagen. Die original „BUST-O_MATIC“ hatte jedenfalls ein Patent. Könnte aber einen Grund geben, warum sich das nicht durchgesetzt hat. (Ich habe sie auch nicht mitgenommen. Zu sperrig und für einen Spontankauf dann auch zu teuer…)

If the patented „BUST-O-MATIC“ worked well I can’t tell. There might be a reason why this type doesn’t exist any longer. (I didn’t buy it either. To big and to expensive to take it spontaneosly….)

Nicht widerstehen konnte ich dann hingegen dieser Spitze. Es ist eine relativ simple Stickspitze, aber das zarte Muster gefällt mir sehr gut. Angeblich stammt die Musterlasche an der die Stück dran waren aus den 1930er Jahren.

What I could not resist on the other hand were those pieces of lace. It’s a relatively simple embroidery lace, but I like the design a lot. It looks like ink drawings. Those were samples from a shop where people then could order the amount they wanted. The seller said it was from the 1930s.

Speachless

Und ich dachte noch beim Blog gucken Was macht sie dann da wohl Schönes?

Und dann klingelt der Postbote und ich finde das hier in einem Päckchen.

When reading her blog I’d thought How beautiful, what is she doing there?

And then the postman rings and I am finding this in a parcel.

Der Quilt ist einfach wundervoll! So viele Details, und alles so durchdacht und abgestimmt.

The quilt is really wonderful! So many details and everything fits together so well.

Hier wurde nämlich ein Gedicht umgesetzt. Die einzelnen Strophen verbergen sich hinter Türen. So passend zum Gedicht.

It’s a poem that was translated into a quilt there. The verses are behind doors which fits the poem extremely well.

(Mit Gedichten kann ich ja in der Regel nicht so viel anfangen, aber Ernst Jandl und dieses Gedicht gehören zu den wenigen, die ich mag. Das muß Gedankenübertragung sein…?)

(Poetry is generally something that I am not too much interested in. I am mostly neutral to that part of literature. But Ernst Jandl and this poem are amongst the few exeptions… it’s one I like. Has somebody been reading my mind?)

Using the useless stuff

Gelegentlich kommen meine kleinen Restestrick- und -häkelarbeiten dann doch mal zum Einsatz… 🙂

So finally some of my useless knitted and crocheted stuff to use up the scraps finds a usefull place.

Ein Geburtstagsgeschenk mit Massageschwamm und Badesalzen wird durch Haarclips abgerundet. Der Mini Seestern ist ja quasi gerade erst fertig geworden (also im Dezember letzten Jahres) und auch die goldigen Resteblümchen mußten weniger als ein Jahr auf ihren Einsatz warten. Also zumindest eines davon.

To make a purchased birthday present (massage sponge and bathing salts) a little more personal I decorated hairclips also. The Mini See Star had to wait only a few moths for its use, also the golden scrap flowers were on rest for less than one year. At least one of it.

Hier noch ein kleiner Blick auf die Rückseite zur Befestigung. Eigentlich wollte ich mit dem Dremel zwei kleine Löcher bohren, aber der war mal wieder nicht greifbar.  Also habe ich den Faden kreuzweise gewickelt und dann auf die „neuralgischen“ Punkte noch Sekundenkleber gegeben.

The second pic shows how I’ve attached the decoration. My idea had been to drill two tiny holes, but somehow the Dremel wasn’t available, so I wound the thread crosswise and then added some super glue to the crossings.

 

Einlage, wie Burda sie sich nicht vorstellt

Interfacing as Burda does not plan it

Zunächst mal müßt ihr diese Bilder nur deswegen ansehen, weil man im Burdaforum keine Bilder hochladen kann. Also muß ich es hier tun, um es dort verlinken zu können.

First of all you have to look at those pictures because you can’t upload pictures to the Burda forum. So I have to show them here to link them over there.

Ich arbeite ja an der Jacke 143 aus der Burda 03/2011 und die Einlagen, die Burda dafür vorsieht sind nur G785. Zwar ist das original Baumwollgabardine und meine aus Wolle, aber ich finde trotzdem, daß G785 ein wenig… „wenig“ ist. Also habe ich am Vorderteil die Schulterpartie mit Seidenorganza verstärkt. Dadurch kommt die Stepperei auch etwas plastischer raus. Außerdem gibt es vorne entlang Streifen, die Jeweils von der Umbruchkante ins Teil hinein ragen.

I am working on the jacket 143 from Burda 03/2011 and I was not happy with the interfacing Burda considered. I like G785, but for a jacket I think it’s to soft. (Burda is using cotton gabardine and I have a woolen fabric, but still…) So I’ve interfaced the front shoulders with silk organza. This also makes the topstitching nicer. I also added some stripes to the fronts. They start at the foldlines towards the sides.

Das Rückenteil hat eine Rückenverstärkung. Dazu mußte ich einen Abnäher nähen, denn durch das schmaler machen der Schultern passen meine Schulterpassen nämlich nicht mehr „grade“ an die Rückenteile. (Für die Abnäher habe ich die Stoffe einfach aufeinander gelegt und von rechts drüber genäht. Ebenso die Rückennaht.)

For the back interfacing I also used silk organza. Since I’ve shortened the shoulder seams my yoke parts don’t fit flat to the back parts, so I had to add a dart. (To sew the dart I’ve just overlapped the fabric and sewn over it with a zigzag seam. Same for the back seam.)

Der Außenkragen wird ebenso verstärkt, wie auch die Taschenklappen. Ich mag das einfach lieber so.

Same interfacing for the outer collar and for the pocket flaps. I like it better like that.

Halfway through!

Im Moment geht es zügig, ich habe tatsächlich 200 Grannies gehäkelt, sprich die Hälfte ist geschafft!

At the moment there is good progress, I’ve crocheted 200 grannies. So I’ve done half of what I will need!

Sollte ich das Tempo beibehalten, wäre ich Juni 2014 mit allen Hexagons fertig.

If I manage to keep up that speed I would have done all hexagons in June 2014.

C’est le temps des…. fraises!

Es ist Erdbeerzeit, daher habe ich heute zum Nachmittagstee schnell was leckeres improvisiert.

It’s strawberry time, so I’ve improvised something tasty for teatime.

Es war quasi ein UWYH…. Die Minigugelhupfs mit Mandel hatte ich am Freitag gebacken (Rührteig hält ja prima), die Sahne war seit Ostern ungeöffnet im Kühlschrank (gute Bio-Sahne… war zwar fast völlig fest geworden, aber weder sauer noch schimmlig) und die Erdbeeren kamen gestern frisch vom Markt. Klarer Fall von: Das Auge ißt mit…

You could call it a UWYH… the mini gugelhupf-cakes with alsmonds I had made on Friday (that kind of cake remains fresh for a long time as long as you store it in a tight container) the fresh cream was unopened in my fridge since easter (good organic cream without additives, became quite solid, but neither sour nor mouldy) and the strawberries came from the market on Saturday. Not only eye candy… 

Drunken Surfer

Nachdem mir das Stricken von Stitch Surfer so viel Spaß gemacht hatte, wollte ich das natürlich wiederholen.

Since I had a lot of fun when knitting Stitch Surfer I wanted to repeat the pleasure.

Aber natürlich nicht identisch, das wäre mir zu langweilig.

But not identically, that would have been to boring.

Also habe ich die Anleitung etwas modifiziert: Ich habe statt vier Reihen „stop surfing“ nur zwei gestrickt, was die Richtungswechsel etwas steiler macht und ich habe einfach jeden (Strick)Tag die Richtung gewechselt. Außerdem habe ich meine übliche Ferse gestrickt und den Schaft kürzer, wie ich es eben sonst auch mache.

So I modified the instructions: Instead of four rows „stop surfing“ I only made two, to get more pronounced direction changes. And instead of following a pattern I simply changed direction every (knitting) day. And I used my „usual“ heel and generally my „usual“ sock receipe.

Das Ergebnis ist also asymmetrisch und unregelmäßig und daher „Drunken Surfer“, also betrunkener Surfer. Daß es mir gefällt muß ich wohl nicht erwähnen. 😉

So my result is asymmetrical and irregular, so I called it „Drunken Surfer“. And of course I like it myself, but I guess I don’t have to tell this? 😉

Als Garne habe ich Reste verwendet, dazu eignet sich das Muster auch gut. (Reste ohne Ringel…) Die rote Wolle ist ein namenloses Knäuel von Opal, das ich für meine originalen Stitch Surfer verwendet hatte. Das graue Garn ist ein Rest von einer meiner Verschenkesocken und kommt von Schewe, Socks’Wool „uni“.

The pattern was a great possibility to use restover yarns without knitting stripes. The red one is the unnamed sock yarn from Opal I had also used for the original Stitch Surfer.And the grey one comes from Schewe and I had previously used it for my Charity socks.

Lace, and make it quick!

Wir wissen alle, daß schnelles Nähen nicht meine Spezialität ist, aber manchmal geht es doch. Wenn es muß.

We all know that fast sewing is not what I am an expert in, but sometimes I can. If I have to.

SpitzenrockSpitze ist ja dieses Jahr wieder ein heißes Modethema und da ich vor einiger Zeit auf eine Vernissage eingeladen war, hatte ich Lust, mir dafür einen Spitzenrock zu nähen. Ich habe nämlich seit 2008 einen großen Rest dunkelblauer Spitze liegen, von der ich damals ein wenig für die Baumarktchallenge gebraucht hatte.

Lace is a hot fashion topic this year and one I like. When I was invited to a vernissage some time ago I thought this would be a great occasion to sew a lace skirt. Because there also was a piece of navy lace in my stash that I had bought for a Challenge in 2008. I had used a tiny bit and didn’t know what to do with the rest at that time.

Jetzt war aber die Zeit knapp, daher kam die übliche Verarbeitung von Spitze mit Zwischenfutter und Futter nicht in Frage. Also habe ich eine „Abkürzung“ genommen, die aber dennoch ein sauberes Resultat hervorbringt. Das Prinzip besteht darin, daß man das Zwischenfutter weg läßt und die Nahtzugaben mit dem Futter sauber einfasst. Wer das nicht kennt, kann die ausführliche Anleitung mit vielen Bildern im Hobbyschneiderin24 Forum anschauen.

Now time was a bit tight and working lace requires a interlining and a lining, which takes time. Time I didn’t have. So I took a kind of „shortcut“ which still creates a clean result. Basically you leave out the interlining and use your lining to bind the seam allowances in one step. If you don’t know this technique you can  check my tutorial on Hobbyschneiderin24. Which is, I am sorry, in German only. But if there is really a request to have it in English I can do it here.

Als Schnitt habe ich meinen selbsterstellten Rockschnitt nach dieser Anleitung verwendet, ein passender Schnitt beschleuningt den Nähprozess natürlich auch ungemein.

As pattern I’ve used my self drafted skirt pattern after these instructions. Having a TNT pattern helps to speed up the process also.

Und weil der Rock so fix fertig war, hatte ich noch die Zeit für einen besonderen Akzent von Hand: Auf der h+h 2013 hatte ich von der italienischen Firma Roncari Piero ein paar Produktproben bekommen. Bisher verkauft das in Italien produzierende Unternehmen nur an Designer und Hersteller, aber sie wollen jetzt auch Kurzwarenhersteller ansprechen. Ich hoffe nur, daß es gelungen ist, denn ich hatte noch selten Soutache, die sich so wunderbar in Form legen lies.

Since sewing went fast I had some time left for a bit of handmade embellishment. On the h+h 2013 the company Roncari Piero had distributed some samples. And what shall I say… this is really professional material. You can see how well I could shape it in all angles. The company produces in Italy and so far they have only sold to designers and fashion lables. But now they are offering there wonderful soutache also to „normal“ dealers. I hope many ordered there, because I want to be able to buy that lovely stuff from my local dealer.

Remnant

TascheDie Jacke ist zwar noch lange nicht fertig, aber die ersten Reste habe ich schon produziert.

The jacket I am working on is far from being done, but I’ve already produced a remnant.

Wenn eine Jacke asymmetrische Taschen hat, dann sollte man auch darauf achten, eine linke und eine rechte zu machen. Statt zwei rechte….

If you make a jacket with asymmetrical pockets you should take care to make a left one and right one. Not two right ones…

Natürlich ist es mir erst aufgefallen, als ich es liebevoll aufnähen wollte… Also die ganze Fitzelarbeit für die Blasebalgtasche noch mal…

And of course I only realized it when I wanted to sew it on… So back to square one and cutting, marking, pressing,…. for the bellow pocket again…
