Key Fish

Es kommt ja selten vor, aber gelegentlich wird meine Resteverwertung auch direkt weiterverarbeitet und verschenkt.

It is rare, but sometimes my using up remnants get there final destination right away.

Gestrickte MinifischeIch hatte sowohl von “Joey’s Baby Silk” von Queensland Collection ein paar Meter übrig, also auch von “Dream” von Tahki Yarns. Zusammengenommen reichte das noch für zwei winzige Fische nach der Anleitung Baby Fish von Ellen Diamond.

I had some few meters left from Joey’s Baby Silk” by Queensland Collection and “Dream” by Tahki Yarns. Taking that together it was just enough for two tiny Baby Fish after the pattern by Ellen Diamond.

Und da eine Freundin mit Vorliebe fürs Maritime Geburtstag hatte, wurde mit etwas Makramee, einigen Perlen und AlterfilS35 in blau ein Schlüsselanhänger draus. (Das Alterfil sieht man zwar kaum, es hat aber im wahrsten Sinne des Wortes die tragende Rolle. Als “Kern” der Makrameeknoten trägt es die Perlen und sorgt dafür, daß der Anhänger nicht gleich reißt, wenn man ihn das erste Mal aus der Hosentasche zieht. 😉 ) Und verschenkt ist er auch schon…

Also the birthday of a friend of mine was approaching, a friend who likes maritime motives and fish. So I added some Makramee and beads and AlterfilS35 in blue and voilà… we have a key ring. (The AlterfilS is hardly visible, but it is actually the most important part. It is the base of the makramee, carries beads and fish and gives the stability needed. So not everything will tear apart the first time you pull the key ring from your jeans pockets. 😉 ) And the gift was recieved with pleasure…

Circle Mitts are Fun!

Die rundgestrickten Stulpen machen wirklich viel Spaß, daher habe ich gleich das nächste Paar gestrickt.

The circle mitts are a lot of fun knitting, so I made the next pair.

Das praktische an der Anleitung ist, daß man ungefähr so viel Garn braucht, wie bei einem Paar Socken für mich übrig bleiben.

The other great thing is, that they need about the amount of yarn that is normally left after knitting a pair of socks for me.

Allerdings hatte ich aus dem “Regia Artic Color” Socken gehäkelt, das hatte mehr Garn verbraucht. Also habe ich noch etwas von dem grauen “Socks’ Wool Lucca” dazu genommen, Das bringt die Kreise besonders gut zur Geltung. 🙂

Only in this case I had crocheted socks from the other part of  “Regia Arctic Color”. And crocheted socks need more yarn. So I added some “Socks’ Wool Lucca” in grey which brings out the circle construction even better. 🙂

(Von dem bunten Garn sind gut acht Meter übrig, das graue Garn war also wirklich nötig.)

(And there are only a little more than 8 meters left of the selfstripeing yarn, so the grey one was really necessary.)

Mitts for an Organist

Orgelhandschuh“Das wäre zum Orgelspielen aber praktisch” sagte ein Freund spontan, als er mich hieran nadeln sah. Er mußte mir aber zustimmen, daß die doch ein wenig mädchenhaft sind. 😉

“That would be useful for playing the organ” a friend of mine said spontaneously when he saw me knitting those. But he agreed that they were a little too girly for him. 😉

(Für Nicht-Kirchgänger: die meisten Kirchen sind alt und nicht gut geheizt. Oder gar nicht, wie in diesem Fall.)

(For those who do not know: European Churches are often old and not well heated. Or not at all. As is the case for my friend.)

Aber das klang nach einem “Auftrag”, der mir Spaß machen würde, also ließ ich mir die Wunschmaße geben und strickte los. Wunschgemäß natürlich in einem frischen männertauglichen grau, sehr weiche Sockenwolle von Lana Grossa, Meilenweit 50 Seta/Cashemere.

But that sounded like an “order” that would be fun so I asked for the measurements he wanted and started knitting. The color he wanted was a fresh grey, of course. A very soft sock woll, Meilenweit 50 Seta/Cashmere by Lana Grossa.

Wenn ich schon keine Farbe nehmen durfte, habe ich mich an der Struktur ausgetobt: die Rippen des Armteils sind locker gezopft, auf dem Handrücken geht es dann mit sehr dichten Zöpfen weiter. Der Daumenzwickel ist extra mit etwas Mehrweite für die Bewegungsfreiheit gestrickt und die Zöpfe laufen dezent über den Daumen weiter.

Since I wasn’t “allowed” colors I played with texture: The ribs on the arm have loose cabels which get dense in the back of the hand. The thumb gusset is a little loose to make sure there is enough room for movements. And decent cables run up the thump.

Die Stulpen sind schön lang, um die Finger in den Spielpausen warm zu halten. Und wenn es ans Spielen geht, dann kann man das Bündchen vorne etwas zurückfalten.

The mitts are nicely long to keep the fingers warm while waiting. And to start playing one can fold it back a bit.

Mir hat das Stricken jedenfalls Spaß gemacht und mein Freund ist glücklich über seine Orgelhandschuhe. 🙂

I had a lot of fun knitting it and my friend is very happy about his organists mitts. 🙂

Ich fand das Konzept der Circle mitts von Sibyl R. auf Ravelry sehr interessant. Man fängt am Daumen an und strickt sich erst mal einen Kreis, der am Ende zusammengestrickt und mit Bündchen versehen wird.

I quite liked the concept of Circle mitts by Sibyl R. which I found on Ravelry. You start with the thumb and then you are knitting a circle which you close in the end before you add the cuffs.

Zum Glück habe ich auch noch selbstmusternde Sockenwolle (Regia Havanna Color von Schachenmayr nomotta) gefunden, um das auszuprobieren. Das Stricken macht viel Spaß, allerdings funktioniert das Konzept nicht so gut, wenn man die Handstulpen etwas länger haben will oder/und wenn man eher lange Hände hat. Dann sind sie nämlich zu weit, wenn sie hoch genug sind. (Das Problem war mit ein bißchen Auftrennen lösbar, wie man sieht.) Und genauere Vorschläge, wie man die Zunahmen im Kreis verteilen soll (nicht nur “nicht regelmäßig”) wären hilfreich gewesen, aber auch hier wurde es beim zweiten Handschuh dann besser.

Luckily I’ve found some remnant of self stripeying sock wool (Regia Havanna Color by Schachenmayr nomotta) in my stash. Knitting was huge fun, though the concept does not work completely if you want your mitts a big longer and/or have more longish hands. In that case they will be too wide when they have the right height. (It involved a bit of frogging, but I could solve the problem, as you can see.) Also it would have beennice to have more precise instruction where to add stitches for the circle (more exact than “not regular”), but the second one got better than the first.

Als Resultat gefällt es mir aber gut, Zumal die verbrauchte Menge ungefähr das ist, was nach einem Paar Socken für mich typischerweise übrig ist. Das werde ich sicher noch mal probieren.

But I like the mitts. Another plus is, that the amount of yarn used is about that what is typically left after a pair of socks for me. So I guess I will make another version…

I failed…

… ist der Versuch mich, die Handwärmer, Tageslicht und einen Photographen zusammen zu bringen. Zumindest bevor dieses Geschenk ab zur Post mußte. Daher ein “Handselfie” vom Modell “Fetching“.

Meine Mutter kam nämlich auch relativ kurz vor dem Fest mit dem Spontanwunsch nach fingerlosen Handschuhen… Bei dem bereits erwähnten Schnellbesuch in der Casa Lana fand ich dann “Garzatto Fleece” von Lana Grossa (Alpaka mit Poly), was ich mit 3,5er Nadeln sehr dicht zu den Handstulpen verstrickt habe. Das Zopfmuster kommt aus Alpaka nicht so gut raus, aber sie sind schön weich und ganz leicht. Und “Fetching” hatte ich schon zwei Mal gestrickt, da wußte ich, daß es schnell geht…

My mother also came up with the spontaneous wish for fingerless mits relatively short time before Christmas. So in the already mentionned short visit to Casa Lana I also picked “Garzatto Fleece” by Lana Grossa (alpaca – poly -blend) which I’ve knitted with 3.5mm needles to very dense mitts. The cables do not show well in Alpaca, but they are very soft. But I have already done Fetching twice, so I knew it would be a fast knit…

Die Rede ist natürlich vom Hitchhiker Tuch von Martina Behm (aus “Strick mich”), das wohl inzwischen auch jeder gestrickt hat. Und endlich auch ich.

Tuch HitchhikerI am talking about the Hitchhiker shawlette by Martina Behm (from “Strick mich”) which everybody has done by now. And finally me, too.

Als Garn habe ich mir Mini Mochi von Crystal Palace Yarns in der Wollbox bestellt. Das Garn hat Sockenwollstärke, ist aber kaum gedreht und dadurch sehr schön weich. Die Mischung aus Merino mit Nylon mag dazu beitragen. Dazu ein langer Farbverlauf… davon gerne mehr. Nicht so für Socken, aber ganz sicher für Tücher. Schade, daß es das Garn in Deutschland nicht so leicht gibt.

As yarn I’ve choosen Mini Mochi by Crystal Palace Yarns I’ve ordered from Wollbox. It is a fingering yarn, but hardly twisted, so it is much softer than normal sock wool. 80 % Merino and 20% Nylon might help the softness. Add a long color run… and I’d like to have more of it. Really a pity, that the yarn is not easily available in Germany.

Ich mag auch das Tuch, es strickt sich ganz einfach, perfekt für Nebenher und ohne viel Denken und das Ergebnis ist dennoch sehr effektvoll. So man das passende Garn findet…

I like the shawlette, it knits up very easily, it is perfect for mindless knitting and the result is very attractive. As long as you find the right yarn…

Flash Overview December 2013

Wie versprochen mal wieder einen tagesfrischen Blick in mein Gewerkel… Ich fange mit dem Nähen an:

As promised a up-to-date view from my running projects… I’ll start with sewing:

Ja, nichts, nothing, nada, rien. Es gibt keine angefangenen Nähprojekte. Nach meiner Jacke habe ich noch Kleinzeug und “dringendes” gemacht. Letzte Woche wurden meine “Verschenksäckchen” fertig, danach habe ich mich an die Weihnachtskarten gemacht (die auch fertig sind, zumindest so weit wie die Klebefolie reichte… *grmpf*)… und das war’s. Der zweite Grund dürfte sein, daß ich noch mit mir hadere, ob ich jetzt diszipliniert eine Bluse zur grauen Hose für das Frühjahr nähen soll, oder noch versuchen, “mal eben schnell” für Weihnachten ein Kleid zu nähen. (Das vermutlich nicht fertig wird und dann wieder ewig als Ufo herumliegt.)

Yes, nothing, nicht, nada, rien. There is no sewing project that is right now under my needle. After finishing the grey jacket (yes, that is a while ago) I only made tiny stuff and “urgencies”. I finished my cookies treat bags last week, made the christmas cards afterwards (which are kind of finished now, because I ran out of double sided adhesive film)… and that’s it. The other reason is probably that I can’t decide if I better continue with the long planned top for the grey pants for spring or if I try to make a dress for Christmas. (Which very likely will not be finished in time and then be another eternal ufo.)

OrgelhandschuheDafür gibt es einige Strickprojekte zu sehen. Das hier sollen Orgelhandschuhe werden, nach Maß aber ohne Anprobe und nach eigenem Entwurf. Das Garn ist “Meilenweit 50 Seta/Cashmere” von Lana Grossa. Fühlt sich weich an, erinnert mich aber mit jeder Masche daran, daß Lana Grossa nicht so mein Lieblingsgarn ist. Zumindest nicht die Sockenwolle.

But I have some knitting projects on the kneedles. First are mitts for playing the organ. (Churches in winter tend to be cold.) They are “made to measure but without a possibility to try them on beforehand” and after my own design. Yarn is “Meilenweit 50 Seta/Cashmere” by Lana Grossa. Feels nicely soft, but reminds me with each stitch, that Lana Grossa is not my favorite brands, at least for sock yarns.

Handstulpen FetchingZum Ausgleich für die großen Stulpen aus dünnem Garn stricke ich aber auch noch kleine fingerlose Handschuhe aus dickem Garn. Ich meine… wer seine Weihnachtswünsche so kurzfristig äußert, muß nehmen, was noch drin ist. Das Modell ist “Fetching” aus knitty, eine bewährte Anleitung.  Garn ist “Garzato Fleece” auch wieder von Lana Grossa. Ja, der Laden hat den Vorzug, daß er vom Büro aus mit etwas Glück tatsächlich mal so zwischendrin erreichbar ist. Und das ist jetzt eilig.

Not only big mitts on small needles, no I am also making small mitts with big needles. Christmas wishes at shirt notice means you have to take what you get. Pattern is “Fetching” from knitty, a TNT pattern. Yarn is “Garzatto Fleece”, again Lana Grossa. Well, I was in a hurry and that shop has the advantage to be pretty close to the office.

Und natürlich gibt es auch einen aktuellen Blick auf die ewige Hexagondecke. 289 ist hier der aktuellen Stand.

And of course a status update from my “eternal hexagons” project. I have 289 hexagons right now.

The Lace Shawl of the Year

Lace TuchJa, dieses Jahr gibt es nur ein Lace Tuch. (Also eines, das wirklich dieses Jahr gestrickt wurde, kein Überlieger vom Vorjahr, der lange aufs Spannen und so warten mußte.) Ich habe inzwischen so viele, daß ich da mal etwas langsamer machen muß…

Yes, this year there will be only one lace shawl. (I mean one I actually knitted that year. Not a leftover from last year I only hadn’t blocked and photographed for very long.) I have to many of those, that I have to slow down a bit…

Das Muster ist wieder aus Victorian Lace Today und hat den etwas sperrigen Namen “Alpine Knit Scarf with Double Rose Leaf Center Pattern and Diamond Border”.

Als Garn habe ich “Zephyr” von JaggerSpun genommen, daß ich mal aus den USA mitbestellt hatte. Für ein Lacegarn ist es recht günstig und auf ravelry und in einigen Blogs hatte ich schon wahre Elogen darauf gelesen. Nun ja, ich war nicht so begeistert. Es ist halt ein Konengarn (Seide mit Wolle), relativ unregelmäßig gesponnen und auch gezwirnt und erzeugt ein recht schlappsiges Gestrick. Das Preis-Leistungsverhältnis ist in Ordnung, aber es gibt Lace-Garne, die sich schöner stricken und schöner anfassen. (Allerdings auch teuerer sind.)

My yarn was “Zephyr” from JaggerSpun. I had once ordered from the US (with other stuff) because I had read on ravelry and on some blogs high praise of it. Well… it won’t get the same praise from me. It’s just another cone yarn (wool and silk), with irregularities in spinning and plying. The result is a very soft knit without hardly any body. It’s okay for the prize, but I know lace yarns that are much nicer to knit with. (More expensive, of course.)

Detail RandmusterDas Muster gehört zu den anstrengenderen, es wird in fast jeder Hin- und Rückreihe gemustert. Aber dafür ist der Rapport im Mitteltel kurz, so daß ich ihn bald auswendig konnte. (Und meiner Ansicht nach ist ein Fehler in der Anleitung, damit die Randbordüre “aufgeht” muß es in der Mitte ein Rapport mehr sein.)

The pattern is one of the more demanding, because you work the pattern in nearly all right and wrong side rows. Luckily the repeat of the middle part is rather short, so I could memorize it easily. (And I think there is a mistake in the pattern, I needed one repeat of the middle pattern more, to have the border “arriving” at the same point.)

Trotz des solala Garns gefällt mir der Schal, sehr leicht, eine kräftige Farbe und ein wirklich extrem schönes Muster. 🙂 Und die Kombination aus “wenig Gewicht” und “etwas rauher Oberfläche” sorgen dafür, daß der Schal gut auf den Schultern liegen bleibt.

Besides the yarn I am not really happy with I like the shawl. Very lightweight, strong color and a really extremly beautiful pattern. 🙂 And the combination of “lightweight” and “a bit rough” makes it stay put on my shoulders very nicely.

Testlace…

Jetzt habe ich euch zwar die Resteverwertung der “Dream” Wolle von Tahki Yarns gezeigt, aber nicht das “Hauptwerkstück”. Wie nachlässig von mir…

Diese Spitzenhandschuhe sind ein Nebenprodukt einer Buchbesprechung. Ich bekam Spitzenstricken – ABC der Handarbeiten als Rezensionsexemplar bekommen und konnte das natürlich nicht beim Lesen belassen.

Those lace gloves are a byproduct from a book review. I got Spitzenstricken – ABC der Handarbeiten from the editor for the review. But I could not restrict myself to reading.

So habe ich mich an das Modell “Perfekt für Jeans” gemacht. Das Ergebnis gefällt mir, der Weg dorthin war steinig: Es gibt keine Maschenprobe und die Garnmengenangaben in Gramm helfen ohne Angaben zur Art des Garns nur eingeschränkt weiter. So habe ich erst mal ein anderes Garn verwendet, das reichte nicht. Und die Nadelstärke mußte ich auch wechseln, um die Größe hinzubekommen. Also viel trennen. Aber das Ergebnis entschädigt zum Glück. Auch wenn ich nach wie vor nicht weiß, ob ich das Muster zu gestrickt habe, wie es gehört… denn man muß es jede Runde um eine Masche verschieben und es wird nicht ganz so klar beschrieben, wie man dann genau ab wo zählen soll…

So I picked the fingerless gloves “Perfekt für Jeans”. I like the result, though the way was not without obstacles. The instrucion has no gauge and the amount of yarn is only given in gramms without any further information about yarn weight. So I had to frog my first version and restart with a smaller needles size because it was to big. Then I had to frog again, when it became clear it wouldn’t be enough yarn. So lot of frogging… but the result does compensate.  Even though I am still not sure if the pattern is intended like that. Since you are knitting in the round you have to shift one stitch every row and the instructions are not very clear where counting starts….

(Das Muster unterscheidet sich übrigens deutlich von allen Spitzenmustern die ich bisher so gestrickt habe. Und es ist sehr interessant, zumal es auch automatisch elastisch wird.)

(The pattern is very different from all lace patterns I had done so far. It is very interesting, and it creates an elastic fabric. )

Christmas is Coming Closer…

Minibaum… was nutzloses Stricken geradezu herausfordert.

… so a great time for completly useless knitting.

Von meinen Spitzenhandschuhen (äh… habe ich die schon gezeigt?) waren immer noch einige Meter übrig. Daher gibt es ein Winzbäumchen auf einem Korken.

After my lace mits (did I show them…?) some meters of yarn were left. So I made a tiny tree which sits on a cork.

Gefunden habe ich die Anleitung wie oft über ravelry und es ist Pint Sized Pines in a Cork Forest von Julie Tarsha, das Garn ist “Dream” von Tahki Yarns. Leider hat es nicht für einen weiteren Baum gereicht, ein Wald wird das also nicht.
