“Biker” Jacke: Reißverschluß in Ärmelschlitz – Teil 2

„Biker“ Jacket: installing the zipper to the sleeve vent part 2

And we continue… installing the second part of the zipper shows a little problem: The zipper band has to align with the later vent opening. Right sides together. So you need to open the zipper and then twist the second zipper band. I’ve done that already quite a few times and it’s basically no problem… it the zipper is about 10cm longer than the opening. I had my zippers made to measure so they fit exactly the opening…. :o)

Another possibility would be to cut the vent open now and the turn the fabric to the zipper band. Just my fabric falls apart so easily, so this is not an option here.

So I twisted the zipper band (checking about five times if it was really right side down) and then pinned it from the bottom to the top as far as it was possible. And then hand basted it to the sleeve.

The facing gets on top (right side of fabric down) and pinned. Here I am pinning as far away from the stitching line, so the pins won’t get in my way later. If the facings should shift by two millimeters it would not be a great deal here.

Again I’m sewing from the left side of the sleeve. I mark the end of my stitching line very well. Especially since my zipper has brass teeth. If the machine needle hits there it would break immediately. The seam is like on the other side very close to the stay stitching.
Schere, Nadel.

Before I am taking the next step I take a deeeep breath and then prepare a few things to have them right at my fingertips… a threaded needle, a thimble and sharp scissors…

Then I am cutting my opening. Only the sleeve fabric of course. Not cutting into the facings and even less into the zipper band. Like always it is one straight cut in the middle until about 1cm before the end and then “Y-like” to the corners. (Which get a drop of Fray Check immediately.)

Then I take the threaded needle and overcast my fashion fabric (together with the underlining(. Also on the little triangle at the end.

After that step I can turn my zipper so that it gets into its end-position. And I check from the right side of the sleeve if it looks the way it should.

Now I can pin the rest of the zipper band to the seam line.

The pin goes through the seamline on the one side and then I am checking if it also goes through the marked seamline on the zipper band. Then I can handbaste my zipper band on the sleeve. For the facing basting is not necessary (it is already mostly sewn), laying flat is enough. Sewing then again from the left side of the fabric. Taking care not to sew through the other side of the vent. It’s a good idea to use a slim presser foot for that task like the straight stitch foot or the zipper foot.

My zipper has a metallic stop at the and that is rather big and very stiff, so I have to stop machine sewing some stitches short of the end of the seam. I leave a long thread hangig and use that to close the seam with a few handstitches. And to attach the little triangle at the end of my vent opening to the underlining fabric.

Der Reißverschluß ist also erfolgreich drin. 🙂

Zipper successfully installed. 🙂
