“Biker” Jacke, die Innentasche

“Biker” jacket, the inside (lining) pocket

For some reasons the gods of garment making have decided, that women do not need pockets inside a jacket. Or should not have them. Or whatever. I personally think they are very useful and the female anatomie also offers a perfect place for a pocket under the breasts. (At least if you do not wear your jacket as fitted as a leotard. Which I do not like in jackets.) Not a pocket to store all your belongings, but a small one that can hold tiny things like a bit of cash, credit card, metro ticket, lipstick,… (alternatively, not all of it at the same time…). So also this jacket will get a pocket inside.

I want to keep the pocket simple, so normally I use a zipper with a fine coil in the color of the lining that I simply sew under the pocket opening. Exactly what I did not have at hand when I wanted to finish my lining. So I checked everything I had that might be right. The decorative zipper was not bad, but the color was quite off (more in real then on the picture) and it also was a bit shorter than I wanted the zipper opening to be. So… maybe better using a button?

My preferred way to sew in the lining is doing that by hand at the very and. That I could not do here, because the inside pocket would be half in the lining and half on the facing. That’s at least what I thought… Now I did cut the facing the same shape as the front middle part so it is getting the smaller the closer it comes to the hemline. If I had really thought that over beforehand it would have been smarter to cat the facings straight down from a bit under the bust line. So there would also have been less seam allowances at the same place…. But well… planning by doing… and so my inside pocket ended up on the lining side only.

To stabilize the pocket opening I take a strip of silk organza and pin it on the left side of the lining. Then I am stitching a rectangle (what will be my pocket opening later) through both layers.

Then I need, the picture show my decision for a button closure, a fabric loop. That is simply a strip of lining fabric cut on the bias and turned inside out after sewing. Like a spaghetti strap, just pressed flat. The position of the pin indicates the size of the loop in the end, so the button will pass through.

For button and loop you have the choice on which side to sew what. ) prefer the loop at the lower edge of the pocket opening. For once because I am more comfortable with it when I want to open it with one hand without looking. The other reason is that if I sew the button to the upper side I can sew it through the lining and both layers of the pocket which gives more stability. But in the end it’s just a matter of taste.

So I am positioning the loop at the lower border of the opening. The part that was marked with a pin hits exactly the stitch line. And the loop points downwards. To make sure this tiny piece of fabric does not move I handbaste it lengthwise. The basting stitches should stop before the upper stitching line and I cut the loop just a tad below it.

The pocket bag is a rectangle, about 4cm larger than the opening and more than twice as long as the depth of the pocket. Then I pin it on the right side of the lining on the pocket opening. Above the opening and on the sides there must be enough fabric to sew the pocket closed in the end.

Sewing from the left side. First I am pinning the fabric from the left side in a way the pins will not disturb my stitching. Than I remove the pins from the right side. And then sewing exactly on the stitchline that is already there.

Cutting the opening legthwise. Make an y-shape to the edges. And not cutting the ends of the loop. There is only 1 cm that should remain, to prevent the loop from fraying.

Pulling the pocket fabric through the opening to the left side. Pressing. Topstitching the lower border from the right side. The opening and the loop are finished.

Then folding up the pocket fabric and sewing it closed from three sides. And zigzagging around. (Or serging, of you prefer.)

fertige Innentasche

Now sewing on the button and the inner pocket is finished.
