Sewing Café in Paris: Sweatshop

„Wie ist das Nähcafé in Paris?“ frage mich jemand. Nähcafé? In Paris? Kann ja wohl nicht sein, daß ich das nicht kenne… Also lies ich mir noch ein paar Hinweise geben, fand die Adresse…. hm, die Straße kenne ich, da ist eines meiner Lieblingslokale um die Ecke. Da war aber doch nie…?

„How is the Sewing Café in Paris?“ someone asked. Sewing Café? In Paris? Without me knowing about it? No… So I asked some more details, found the address… well, I know the street, one of my favorite restaurants is not far. But there never was…?

Also bin ich losgezogen und siehe da, es gibt den Laden. Eher schlicht, aber gleichzeitig anziehend. Viel Vintage-Flair und ein Pulli mit interessantem Design im Fenster.

Und nichts verdeckt den Blick auf das kreative Chaos im Inneren. (Naja, weniger Chaos, mehr gestopfte Kreativität.)

So I went, searched and found the shop. Simple design from the outside, but attracting the same time. A lot of vintage style and a knit sweater with artful design in the window.

And nothing hides the creative chaos inside. (Well, not so much chaos, more stuffed with creativity.)

Im Zentrum des Raumes steht ein großer und hoher Zuschneidetisch. Mein Traum…

Hier am Tisch sitzt übrigens auch Martena Duss, eine der Gründerinnen. Wir haben uns dann schnell auf Deutsch unterhalten, denn Martena kommt aus der Schweiz. (Ihre Partnerin aus Österreich, aber die war an dem Tag nicht da.)

At the table seated was Martena Duss, one of the shop owners. We quickly switched our conversation to German, because she comes from Switzerland (but speaks also English well). And the second owner comes from Austria.

Ins gemütliche Vintage Ambiente passen auch die Singermaschinen im selbern Stil. Aber sie sind brandneu. 🙂

Auch eine Overlock steht zur Verfügung, zwei Maschinen mit vielen Zierstiche und natürlich eine Bügelanlage. (Wirklich wichtig zum Nähen!) Es gibt nämlich noch einen zweiten Raum im Hintergrund, wenn man an der Kaffeemaschine vorbei geht. Schließlich muß auch noch für die gemütlichen Sofas und Sessel Platz sein. Und die vielen Materialien, die sich überall befinden. Scheren, Nähgarn, Maßbänder, Schneiderwinkel,… was man so braucht ist vorhanden und kann benutzt werden. Und wer so gar nichts dabei hat kann auch Materialsets mit Anleitung für kleine ganz entzückende Projekte kaufen.

The Singer sewing machines fit well into the vintage atmosphere. But they are brand new. 🙂

But there is also a serger, machines with a lot of decorative stitches and of course a good pressing equipment. (So important for great sewing results!) Because there is a second room behind the coffee machine. The comfy sofas and seats need room also as does all the sewing stuff like scissors, curves, tape measures, sewing thread,… what you need is there and you can use it. And if you come completely unprepared because you just felt an immediate urge to sew something you can buy extremely cute kits that include material and instructions.

Aber man kann nicht nur einfach kommen und für 6 EUR die Stunde die Maschinen benutzen, es gibt auch Kurse. Nähkurse, Workshops (im Juli mit einer Stilistin aus den Ateliers von Sonia Rykiel), Kurse für Kinder und Strickkurse. Im Sommer sogar Kombinationen aus Sprachkurs und Strick- bzw. Nähkurs.

You can just come in and use the machines for 6 EUR/h, but there are also classes you can take. Sewing classes, workshops (in July there is one with a stylist from the ateliers of Sonia Rykiel), classes for kids and knitting classes. Over the summer you can even have combinations of language class and creative workshops.

Für Stärkung ist auch gesorgt. Neben der Kaffeemaschine gibt es Bionade und jede Menge lecker Süßes.

And it’s not only a sweatshop, it’s also a sweetshop. 😉 So you can have coffee, but also other tasty stuff for your sweet tooth.

Selbstgemacht ist auch der Kuchen, den man kaufen kann. Den habe ich getestet und er war extrem lecker…

Homemade is also the cake. Very tasty, I did test it…

Dank Sofa, Kaffee und Kuchen konnte ich auch mein Herzblatt lange genug ruhig halten, um mich in Ruhe umzusehen und Bilder zu machen. Sehr praktisch. *g* Und 5 EUR für Kuchen und einen Espresso sind in Paris ein guter Preis. Wer also nur in kreativer Umgebung seinen Kaffe trinken (und vielleicht die Stricknadeln auspacken) will ist hier auch an einem guten Ort.

Thanks to sofa, coffee and cake DH was happy long enough to give me the time to study everything and take the pics. Very good. 🙂 And 5 EUR for cake and espresso are a very fair price for Paris, so if you want nothing more than to sit down in creative surroundings (and maybe get out your knitting) then that’s the place to go.

Wir hatten übrigens einen ruhigen Tag erwischt, sagte Martena und besonders am Wochenende ist viel los. (Und trotzdem waren wir nicht die einzigen im Laden als wir kamen und als wir gingen kamen schon die nächsten.) Was mich auch nicht wundert, denn wer in Paris hat schon Platz für eine Nähmaschine und noch weniger eine großen Zuschneidetisch aufzustellen? Und statt sich alleine mit einer lumpigen Maschine abzuquälen kann man in der Gemeinschaft und ggf. mit Hilfestellung viel mehr Spaß haben. 🙂

We came at a quiet day said Martena and especially at the weekends a lot of sewers are gathering there. (And even on that quiet day there were people in when we came and others arrived before we left.) I am not really surprised, because Paris appartments are usually tiny and there is no room to store sewing machines or all the stuff that comes with it. Not to took about a big cutting table. And instead of suffering in front of a lousy and cheap machine alone at home you use decent material and have fun with others. And get even some help.
